  • Ask the Readers: Do You Have Financial Resolutions for 2013?   13 years 26 weeks ago

My budget is pretty tight as is, but in 2013 I plan to not waste money on the little things. A few dollars here and there add up over the year.

  • Part-Time Jobs That Can Get You Serious Discounts   13 years 26 weeks ago

Hotel chains give awesome discounts as well. Hilton employees (the chain I work for) has $29 and $39 rates for most properties. I saved $250 per room per night a couple of years ago in Savannah GA. I'm paying $39 for a room tomorrow in Indianapolis IN that is listed at $119 and up on most sites. You have to be flexible to get rooms if the destination is a popular place, but with a little planning (you can reserve rooms up to a year in advance), it can save a load of money.

  • Healthy, frugal eating   13 years 26 weeks ago

Well, it's cheap (or can be) during part of the year. Even in those farmers markets where things are priced like yuppy specialty items, during the season there's so much of whatever's at its peak that those items are cheap.

And "varied" doesn't really mean that you need to eat three different vegetables each day. Varying your vegetables over the course of the seasons is good enough for good health. (After all, people evolved to eat whatever was available over the course of the year, and in lots of places where people lived successfully for thousands of years, there are only a few things available at any particular time.)

  • Are You Getting Charged by a Text Message Scam?   13 years 26 weeks ago

Just returned from the ATT store, regarding these bogus charges and others. HERE'S THE BOTTOM LINE, AT&T DOESN'T CARE ABOUT THEIR CUSTOMERS. They have to charge and then transfer funds to these scammers AND THEY DO IT! Please wake up America, corporations don't care about you or your LOYALITY. I told AT&T to cancel my 4 lines (after 21 years of unlimited plans) and the rep reply was OK. I'm sure the others won't be any better but I know AT&T doesn't care!!!!

  • 7 Easy Lunch Ideas for Work   13 years 26 weeks ago

As a student returning to school for the spring, one of my favorite gifts I received this Christmas was a Mr. Bento Stainless Lunch Jar which will help me bring warm lunches to school with me each day! It is indeed more cost-effective and time-efficient to pack one's own lunch and since I'm now well-equipped to do so I will quite often. :)

Here is a product that I use with almost any vegetables, meat, soups, salads etc.that I prepare.
This product, also makes a great spread for your garlic bread. I'm not sure, but I think this may have been it's original use.

The product is: "Johnny's Garlic Spread & Seasoning": johnnysfinefoods.com/products/garlic-spread This product comes from the same people who make the great seasoning salt, I grew up with.

I have been using this particular product for at leas 10 plus years. I currently buy a large size at my local Costco outlet in Shoreline, WA.

One of the first ways I used this product was in a rub for meats (beef, chicken, and even fish).
I combined Johnny's Garlic Spread & Seasoning with salt and ground pepper. (Combine proportions
    to suit your own taste.)

Over the years, I have recommended Johnny's Garlic Spread & Seasoning to a large number of my friends. Each one seems to come up with their own special uses for this seasoning.

I rarely will recommend a product, but this one is a real exception!

Just so you know, I have no affiliation with any company or outlet that would market this product.
    I just really like it!

"I'm going to eat [MSG] until it gives me cancer."

This is pretty irresponsible writing. If MSG does not cause cancer, then you are maligning the chemical unfairly and passing bad information to your readers. If MSG does cause cancer, the statement implies blithe ignorance of cancer's devastation. You have a responsibility as a writer to be more informed about what you are communicating to those who pay you the courtesy of reading what you write. It's hard to take any of your dietary recommendations seriously when you are so dismissive of whether saving a few pennies on spices might lead to cancer.

  • A Comprehensive Guide to the Envelope System   13 years 26 weeks ago

I use the envelope system for groceries, gas, and entertainment. As I get paid weekly, I break down the money from my budget and put it into the envelopes. At the end of the week I write down how much I spent. I then take all of the leftover envelope money from the week and put it into a 4th envelope "Emergency Fund". At the end of the month I calculate how much I saved and was put into the Emergency Fund envelope. I convert all of the money in the Emergency fund envelope into big bills ($100 or $50) so I am less likely to spend them.

Getting a sufficient amount of fresh, varied vegetables is *not* cheap. I can eat a diet that is mostly rice and beans, which is fine and cheap, but without the addition of vegetables (which quickly amount to much money) it's not sufficient in itself.

  • Trader Joes vs. Costco: What's a Better Place to Shop?   13 years 27 weeks ago

I have shopped at Trader Joe's for thirty five years. Two original purposes of TJs was to provide quality products at prices teachers could afford and to provide organic, no preservatives, and otherwise healthy processed foods. Regarding produce you can easy see a good variety of organic at TJs, not so easy at Costco. Almost all TJs meat offerings are organic or without harmful additives. TJs is my grocery store because I can count their quality without reading all the labels. My kids are second generation TJs shoppers!
