don't forget in the deep clean to clear out your dryer vent. silly way for a house to catch fire, especially when it's an easy fix. renters - even apartment-dwellers - at least clean out the tube up to the wall. unplug first :)
I would like to have an equestrian riding arena put in on my property for Christmas! Somewhere I can ride and enjoy my property without having to haul my horse off the farm.
I agree with most of this list. Some are truly unethical (wrong file, off label use of drugs) and some add hassle instead of subtracting it (more gear, multitasking).
But we take exception to the one about changing traditions. Certainly family members can be considered but not to the exclusion of one's own contentment. My spouse and I have dropped traditions inherited from our birth families concerning holiday celebration until they are now all gone.
Our friends and most relatives couldn't be more supportive of our decisions and those who aren't have learned to live with it. Their disapproval is far less burdensome than us being in inauthentic or doing things by rote, in an insincere way. Ugh to that.
How do you think traditions get started in the first place? By people doing what they enjoy!
In this article, under "When you should get a secured card ...," Jason states, "obtaining a secured card and making on-time payments is a critical way to rebuild one’s credit." I'd like to know how? Banks don't report secured credit cards to my knowledge so how would any credit bureau know of the favorable experience?
I want my Parents (who are visiting and staying with me this year) to not see how impoverished my fiance and I am. We are barely keeping our head above water financially; trying to provide the world for our 10 month old while battling our debts. My parents have helped quite a bit but I want them to leave with nothing but warm memories and worry free (as much as a parent can be)
I love to have an ipad or a kindle ebook reader. It's a must have for me as I spend a lot of time reading books. So I have to have something that I could carry away and read wherever I am.
I travel a lot so an ebook reader or tablet might help me a lot. .....
Ohhhh... I wish to have one of these items so much....
Multitasking only works when you can let one task run in the background while you do the other one. For example, I'm making a batch of beer, and I need to boil my wort for half an hour. So while the wort is boiling, I'm emptying the dishwasher and cleaning the kitchen counters. That's effective multitasking.
Perfect article for me to read today. It is my day off and my car is at the mechanic awaiting a repair so I can't go out and get groceries (too cold in my part of Canada to walk anywhere today) so I was just thinking maybe I would send out for pizza for supper. No cash on hand so the pizza would end up on the credit card. Not a good plan.
I was surfing for money saving tips and this blog popped up to remind me to stay the course. Lots of food in the pantry so with a little effort I can create something edible without stepping deeper in to debt.
I love doing handmade gifts. The pre-made mixes are a favourite, any kind of spice mix goes over really well. Soup kits, with beans noodles and dried veggies are fun as well.
For wrapping - I always pick up a bunch of paper and bows the week between Christmas and New Years - generally for next to nothing.
Great tips in this article - I like re-gifting a lot. If I don't like something, but someone else might - that's lovely!
Craft supplies are awfully expensive. I've been crocheting, cross stitching, beading, latch hooking, pouring candles, scrap booking, stamping, card making and sewing for 25+ years and I'm only 33, so I have a lot of experience! I look for supplies at rummage sales and thrift stores but not everything needed for a project can be found at those venues.
Food ingredients also not free. Seen the price of a jar of peanut butter lately? Or bag of walnuts or macadamia nuts for holiday baking? Those jars to put the mixes in? Also not free unless you inherited them when grandma passed on.
I am quite frugal and bought several gifts used this year, made a lot of gifts, and we do minimal gifting as it is.
I have to disagree with #6. Family traditions need to evolve and change over time. We caused a stir years ago when, as parents with small children who travelled to family member's homes for every single holiday because we always gathered at our parent's homes (for generations), we decided to choose one holiday - Thanksgiving - and stay home to make our own traditions. We told the family that they were welcome to spend the holiday with us, but we're not leaving our house. No one was happy about it at the time and boy, did we hear about it for several years, but after a while, as the rest of our siblings began having families of their own, they were grateful to be able to stay home and enjoy their own families. Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind...
I don't understand why there are so many good comments, while this post is almost useless:
1) It is pure luck if you find an accommodation in the place where you want to be.
2) To become a frequent flyer w.o. flying will require to spend 50K USD for a gold status, in average it is 1 Mile for 1 USD spend in the Promos buying completely useless things, event the link here goes to a book which helps you to earn miles, LOL!
Making coffee at home has been saving me quite a bit of money lately. I was doing a budget through mint.com and it really shed light on how much I was wasting on coffee drinks. So I bought a coffee pot and have been enjoying coffee at home. It took about a week before I didn't miss going to the coffee shop at all.
Yes, it's all about how we need to feel in control of ourselves and of our lives. This article is so well thought-out and laid-out. You're very warm, but you're also very theoretical and philosophical.

re: "7. Anything That Requires Buying More Gear, Tools, or Apps"
This brings to mind that most life hacks are pretty much just cyber gadgets!

What a great idea, giving saving tips during the holiday, and giving away awesome prizes.

Yah kids love these thing especially when they must work on their gift before opening them.
Excellent points. Drink a lot of water really helps. I drink a lot and try to stay calm in the when everyone is shouting.

I want a gift certificate for a professional organizer service
