  • Ask the Readers: Do You Go to Concerts?   13 years 47 weeks ago

I don't get to see a lot of concerts, but let me tell you -- one of the best experiences of my life, was when I went to Ireland, by myself, to see U2. It was awesome.

Here's how I saved on that trip:
    1 - I joined U2.com, so that I could get first-dibs on discounted tickets
2 - I got amazing airfare (during peak season, even!) just by getting newsletters from travel sites. I called a travel agency, just to double check that it was legit, and they found an even better rate.
3 - I got on facebook & made friends with people from my church over there. They met me at the airport, let mehave a place to stay, and hung out with me for the weekend.

Over all, it was less that $500, including airfare, parking, and the tickets. :)

  • Great Ways to Generate Passive Income   13 years 47 weeks ago

This is a thought-provoking article. The dream of passive income compels me, and I have started my own blog with the idea eventually being able to sell an e-book off of it, or something of that nature. Hopefully I will be blessed for it to gain popularity one day, and hopefully I will also be able to investigate some of these other ideas.

I've been to a few concerts in my life. The number of concerts is so low because I refuse to pay $40+ for any concert ticket...it's more like $65 plus NOW. My city just added a new 9k seat arena bringing in some big names but I just don't have that much money to use for a 'splurge.' The state fair concerts and smaller venues have lower-prices which I do use sometimes. I also go to the symphony more often due to low balcony ticket prices and university fine arts programs.

The best kept concert venue for frugalistas - PBS TV. They have some great headliners for the more mature crowds for free. Rock, R&B, Soul, Jazz, 50s, 60s, disco, classical, newer bands...FOR FREE! The seats are always supurb too!

I think the idea that working at home isn't real work is slowing changing, though. I've seen a lot more companies offering that as an option. As long as they get the productivity they want, it sure makes sense for the bottom line!

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Go to Concerts?   13 years 47 weeks ago

I've been to one whole (professional) concert in my life. Crowds aren't my favorite thing, so concerts aren't either.

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Go to Concerts?   13 years 47 weeks ago

Yes I go to concerts. It's the one thing I will splurge on.

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Go to Concerts?   13 years 47 weeks ago

I have not been to a concert in years. Don't have any intentions of going to any soon, the price of a ticket scares me away.

  • The Straight Talk on Working From Home   13 years 47 weeks ago

When people find out that I work from home, some are envious whilst some think it's not a real job. But I love this set-up for its many perks.

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Go to Concerts?   13 years 47 weeks ago

We have been going to concerts for over 35 years. We love all kinds of music and don't mind paying for tickets. We enjoy indoor and outdoor concerts as well as festivals around the US where different bands perform. Concerts are the best form of relaxation!

If we want to improve the financial health in this country, we all have to start saving more and wasting a lot less. Learning to not spend on things we don't really need is a good start. Adults have to start setting a good example. We do our best at home, I try to teach my kids not to take things for granted. I hope that I am doing a good job. I feel positive this will all catch on sooner or later.

ON MY WAY TO THE ULTIMATE CONCERT AS I TYPE THIS!
Driving from Ontario, Canada to Manchester, Tennessee for the 4-day BONNAROO Music & Arts Festival!

Live shows are pretty much my life.

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Go to Concerts?   13 years 47 weeks ago

I quit going to concerts when I saw that starting ticket prices for ho-hum groups were more than the nosebleed seats I paid for at an Eric Clapton concert. I just keep thinking, do I really want to pay more to see this group than I paid to see Eric Clapton, the master of the guitar? The answer is always no. So I stick with free concerts--there's one tonight, in fact!

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Go to Concerts?   13 years 47 weeks ago

Yes - when I can afford them. I have won tickets o local concerts too, which is awesome!

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Go to Concerts?   13 years 47 weeks ago

Yes. Although I will rarely pay for a concert myself. I go to free concerts or someone will often pay for my ticket.

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Go to Concerts?   13 years 47 weeks ago

    I love going to concerts!

I don't mind going by myself so I try to get tickets through craigslist or from a scalper before a show for a better deal. This only works if the show isn't sold out.

  • How to Watch Movies in the Theater for Free   13 years 47 weeks ago

Things you should know about these screenings: Not that it's always the case, but often these free advance screenings are organized horribly. They over-book the theater several hundreds, to ensure they fill the theater. What this means for you, is if you show up even 2 hours early, there is still a chance you won't get in. I speak from experience, twice as a matter of fact, and I've given up on going to them. 3 hours waiting in line for "Man on a Ledge," which I didn't even want to see that much. I was life the 12th person in line, by the time the started letting people in, there were several hundred people in line behind me. Those 11 other people in front of me, let like 30 or 40 people cut in line, and by the time I walked inside the theater, there were no available seats. The organizers were kind enough to give me passes to another advance screening of the same film, but why would I waste another 3 hours of my life like that again.

  • How to Travel Full-Time for $17,000 a Year (or Less!)   13 years 47 weeks ago

I'm planning on quitting my desk-job in January to take off travelling and had planned on budgeting $20,000 for the year. I'm hoping photography + a couple other ideas will see me make $10,000 in the first year, which will be enough to encourage me to go for a second year and hopefully continue to base my lifestyle around long term travel. This article is certainly encouraging!! Paying for flihgts is the biggest roadblock I can see and need to figure out how to get around it.

  • How to Shop: A Beginner's Guide   13 years 47 weeks ago

Another one to add: If you can try it on or try it out before you buy, DO IT. Just because the reviews are good and the item / service is known to have high-quality, there's still a chance you might not like it. Then you have to spend money or time returning the item / service.

  • 25 Tasty and Affordable Salad Dressing Recipes   13 years 47 weeks ago

HOLY SMOKES!!! I have been using #24 as a salad dressing for YEARS!!! (here i thought i invented this LOL) I always take dehydrated hummus powder in a ziplock bag while traveling. I use juice from a fresh lemon & water to rehydrate this into a great dip for veggies on a road trip. While camping, I rehydrate the bag with water (dried lemon is already in the bag) when ever i find a field of young dandelion greens for on the fly salads (after 3-4 days of hiking..anything fresh is so welcomed) I started using this when i went away on business trip and got to my hotel to late to go out to eat, but i was starving. Crackers & carrots traveled well in my bag. If i didn't use the dip,i bought it back home to use for the next trip as this has a long shelf life. I buy this at my local health food store.

  • The Best and Worst Things to Buy in June   13 years 47 weeks ago

Excellent suggestions and I learned years ago there are certain times to shop for big ticket items. I worked in retail management and shopped for the holidays in the summer and yard furniture in September. I always look forward to Vicky's big sale in June to stock up on essentials. I was browsing around for a new laptop and the prices are very cheap right now.

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Go to Concerts?   13 years 47 weeks ago

My wife and I like to go to concerts, but not at the outrageous prices that seemingly every concert comes with. If we know we want to see a band play, we'll see how much tickets cost and decide what the ceiling would be to make the show worth going to.

A trick we've found is to find shows we'd like to go to and start stalking Stubhub. Usually by the week of the show, people just start unloading tickets at great prices for fear of losing the entire cost of the ticket. Most recently we got to see The Shins, 10 rows back from the stage at a great venue, and paid less than half of face value for the tickets.

Of course we have to decide to be okay NOT going to the show when do this. If a good deal doesn't come up, we just don't buy tickets.

  • A Comprehensive Guide to the Debt Snowball Method   13 years 47 weeks ago

One of the not very often mentioned benefits of paying one card off completely is that --LO and BEHOLD -- that card will send you a balance transfer offer at a 0% or low % (1.9 to 3.9 in my case). This is the way I paid off $18,000+ in CC debt without having to apply for another card. As soon as I paid one off, got a balance transfer offer, transfered some of my high interest debt (24.99 to 29.99%) to it. By the time I was down to one balance, it was at 1.9% and easy to pay off. I've been living debt free for 5 years now and it is incredible!!!!
