  • 10 Ways to Update Your Winter Wardrobe on the Cheap   14 years 43 weeks ago

I've never heard of Glitter sales before. I can't decide if I love or hate that idea -- on one hand, knowing that you're going to get a bunch of good stuff on one particular day is awesome. But I agree -- knowing that you're getting the "meh" stuff the rest of the year is pretty lame.

In my small corporate department of 9 people, the boss hires as much for compatibility as skill set. Unlike several jobs I've had, we all get along great; there is no gossiping, back-biting or backstabbing. Going to work every day is a joy now!

Hey Karen, remember that there are people who offer moving help, it's usually a flat fee and you can find them in the Services section. We bought a fridge last year, way too big for us, but we paid someone $50 to pick it up and deliver it to our door. Even with that delivery charge added in, it was half the price of a used fridge from a store. Also, places like Home Depot offer truck rental for about $20/hour.

My favorite Thanksgiving budget dish/comfort food is our Fresh Garden Green Bean Casserole. Made pretty much the same as the traditional Green Bean Casserole only with fresh Green Beans and Onions from our veggie garden! (Harvested, blanched and frozen;) Saves money and also no pesticides so healthier for our family! Happy Thanksgiving!

My job is sort of part-time educational consulting. I tutor adult, ESL, graduate, undergraduate, and high school-level English composition, GRE-, SAT-, GED-prep, and study skills, as well as freelance proofreading and editing. I love it because this flexible work gives me a chance to meet one-on-one with people working toward their goals, and also because my job gives me a window into other's worldviews.

My favorite is glazed pearl onions. Made with beef broth and balsamic vinegar, they add a dash of sweet and pungent to the milder flavors of Thanksgiving.

  • Why I (Heart) My High Deductible Health Insurance Plan   14 years 43 weeks ago

    Diane,

You will need to ask about the combined deductible. Our plan requires $2500 for me and $2500 for my husband, but only pays out after $5000 has been met. In other words, there is a "family deductible" which is the combined cost of the both of us. If my husband incurs $5,000 in costs, for example, it will start paying right after that (regardless of the fact that I incurred no costs.) Plan terms vary, so check with your insurance company before signing up.

I agree with your list, but I have to say that for some of the larger items you have to have access to a truck (or a friend with a truck). I have neither, and that makes some larger items harder to obtain. I lost out on a brand new treadmill in my own neighborhood because I didn't have a way to get it home. Plus I would have needed help to get it to the basement.

You nailed it with number one! Weights for exercise are pretty much interchangeable - you need to know if you have an olympic bar or not, but outside of that you can pretty much just buy what you find on Craigslist. Considering weights are regular priced at ~$2 a lb you can usually enjoy massive savings by going the CL route.

Potatoes are my comfort food, and Thanksgiving, in my opinion, is incomplete without a potato-based side dish. That being said, a $2 bag of potatoes is the way to go if you're cooking dinner on a budget. Mashed, scalloped, or baked potatoes are simple and fantastic when you jazz them up with sour cream, gravy, fresh garlic, chives, etc. Add any other herbs or seasonings like curry or cumin to the mashed or scalloped potatoes to add a little bit of a kick and voila! Usually these ideas only take me about 20 mins each including prep.

  • DIY - Silk Flower Brooch   14 years 43 weeks ago

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have been looking at these pins on e-bay (which for anyone not willing to make it themselves, is MUCH cheaper than department stores) and mildly thinking, why can't I make them myself using dollar store silk flowers? Although, I kept getting stuck at the part where I know I'll have to cut off the plastic part on the back holding the whole thing together. Well, as I began this, thanks for the detailed instructions. Now, I just have to get myself to a craft store!

  • 6 Awesome Credit Card Tricks That Will Save You Money   14 years 43 weeks ago

I look at my credit cards as simply a payment method that allows me to reconcile and track purchases - and get paid for doing it.
As purchases are made they are entered into a register (Quicken) similar to a checkbook register. This is the point of reconciling the accuracy of the receipts. The actual reconciliation of the account takes only minutes each month because I don't have to go back and check each purchase.
I have found discrepencies in statement charges, mostly due to tips but a few vendor errors over the years have resulted in a quick fix after a phone call.
We average OVER $100/month in cash (non-taxable) rewards. Our neighbor has asked us to buy a TV for them online - and that's a $20 reward by itself!
We have netted almost $20,000 since playing the rewards game.

Some great tips here. I was first turned down by AMEX for their Blue Cash card but got accepted after I called and spoke with them. Sometimes just asking is enough to get what you want. The worst that can happen is they still say no.

My all time favorite dish would be the stuffing. You can't have turkey without the stuffing...alot of stuffing. It's so easy and cheap to make, and there are so many different ways to make it. I don't think you can go wrong.

It's not particularly clever, but you can't go wrong with mashed potatoes! They are cheap and probably my favorite part of Thanksgiving dinner.

My favorite Thanksgiving dish is both inexpensive and a comfort food. We have always had collards for Thanksgiving. This food brings back childhood memories of the past when I didn't even like collards. Now I love them!

  • Supermarket Shopping for Savers: 6 Ways to Avoid Their Tricky Traps   14 years 43 weeks ago

i've learned one of the best ways to save money overall at the grocery store is to eat EVERYTHING in your fridge before you get another round of food. exhaust the goods in your cupboard and get creative with meals by using what you have.

it may take a bit of sacrifice but your wallet will thank you.
