Mmmmmmmm mashed organic yukon gold potatoes! Served with gravy from my organic, free-range turkeys.
Buy frozen? Are they serious? Know where your food comes from, do a little research. An organic or heritage turkey may cost more but at least you know it was raised in decent surroundings!
The people I get to work with every day. They're mentors, they're friends, and while they pay great attention to detail and take pride in their work, they have an excellent perspective and don't take the work or themselves too seriously. We manage to laugh about something at every meeting...while still getting the work done.
Oh and one more thing...If you don't want to spend withdrawal fees at the ATM..then get cash back on a purchase when you go to the store. Supermarkets usually will allow you to take out up to $200 cash at a time. So go buy a piece of candy for a dollar and take out $200. I haven't spent a dime on withdrawals as yet, because I don't use ATMs
See?? ANOTHER NO BRAINER!!!!
My husband and I both have Account Now accounts and an unsolicited Net Spend card was sent to me a couple of months ago. I haven't activated it as yet because I'm still using my Account Now card. They sent me the card because they are one of Account Now's affiliates. My daughter uses Net Spend and is very happy with it as well.
My husband just opened a Net Spend account a few months ago and hasn't had a problem at all. I will be activating my card soon also. Yes, they do charge a little bit for service calls etc..but we haven't spent any money because we haven't had to speak with anyone in customer service to complain about anything and we check our balances ONLINE for FREE. We have checked their fees and they are WAY LESS than what the banks charge. I think having a bank account is a rip off...their fees are outrageous. Our payroll checks are deposited directly into the debit card accounts and the money is there for us right away to use with no hassle.
And like I said before, check your balance online for free and only use the phone if you have a question or complaint and need to speak to a rep. It's a no-brainer as far as I'm concerned.
My favorite budget conscious Thanksgiving food is mashed potatoes and gravy. Our local Ralph's always has 10lb bags of potatoes on sale and we have all of the other ingredients in the house already -- butter, milk, salt, sour cream. The gravy is easy enough too, using the turkey drippings. Thanksgiving wouldn't be the same without mashed potatoes and gravy!!
Two words: homemade stuffing! My mother make her own stuffing, and it tastes delicious! The savory food is great alongside other traditional Thanksgiving side dishes. Some may not like stuffing, although I am not sure why. My mother's stuffing is also NOT put in the turkey, allowing it to stand on its own among the creamy potatoes, cranberry sauce, and rolls. Stuffing, when created at home and sans poultry, is a delight!
Turnip and Carrot is hands down my favorite Thanksgiving dish. 2lbs of purple top turnips and 2lbs of carrots costs less than $6 and covers me for at least a week in the veggie/side dish department. With a little butter and salt it's irresistible.
You place equal responsibility on home owners and the mortgage industry. I have argued that is in fact incorrect and the responsibility (fiduciary to be specific) lies upon the mortgage companies. This is not to deny the culpability of owners but only to state that responsibility takes priority:
Sweet potatoes! You can make casserole with them or top with marshmallows or candy them or even make pie. Very budget friendly and a staple for Thanksgiving dinner.
I have used it on my face for 20 years and it helps keep the redness out of some harmless skin cancers. Not saying it is a cure, but one has gone completely. I also use paw paw on the skin cancers.
But I have been using Dickinson's on a major surgery scar (hysterectomy) and as a cold compress on my very sore swelly belly and it looks very good after only one week.
Highly recommend it for anyone healing a swollen wound.
I hear some plastic surgeons use it also.
But, my doctor and none of the nurses in the hospital knew anything about it, which is a shame as it works so good.
I can never get anyone to actually SHOW UP to clothing/make-up swaps. Seattlites tend to flake a bit too easily.
This Saturday (Nov. 12), our Seattle-area Goodwill is holding their annual Glitter Sale, which is where the sell all the good stuff that people donate. Like, if you donate a pair of Prada heels, the staff swipes them immediately and saves them for the Glitter Sale. This is awesome, because the sale is where ALL THE AWESOME shoes and clothes are sold. But it also sort of sucks, because it means that the rest of the year at Goodwill is kind of a waste.
I hate waiting in line, and people line up early for the Glitter Sale, so I won't be attending. But I wonder if other big-city Goodwills or other thrift stores do the same?
What I love about my job is that it keeps a roof over my head. What I hate about my job is that the pay is pretty low, some of the higher ups treat me like a servant and some of the things the corporation does are downright evil.
Homemade gravy. Thoroughly mix together equal parts flour and drippings in a pan. Cook on medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the roux is lightly browned. Then wisk in turkey stock until it reaches the consistency you want. So good and it's pretty foolproof.
I never used to think like this but after going through 6 months of rumors and then layoffs caused me to rethink my career. Now several more rounds are due in 2012. The company is ruthless and admits its replacing more expensive employees with cheaper ones. From their perspective it all has to do with shareholder value. Benefits are cut each year while profits increase. Think Occupy Wall St.
All this creates a hostile work environment of stress and low morale. Everyone is expected to work like a robot. Everyone is statused and micromanaged and being tracked (especially Internet and time cards).
I’m able to accept early retirement but want to get a severance package to grease the skids.
I think the political tactics are best like going over your bosses head to try to resolve issues on your own.
I declined the Christmas luncheon first so that everyone else would see my name. I wrote to the president of the company asking about extensions to our work but yet no more funding. In this way you are a caring individual but sticking your head up to be axed! I am also fortunate enough to be doing a very difficult task and being slow to resolve it. Management always underestimates how long a task takes and employees are now asked to commit to their schedule. They are not responsible anymore - we are.
So it’s a fine line which I’m walking. My wife tells me to quit thinking like an ass, but I enjoy it as I get to plan ingenious ways acting like Dr. House. All in great fun!
Socialized healthcare is coming just in time. Stress kills and its fun to laugh and live longer.
Sweet and Sour Green Beans with Bacon-- yummy. Not typically Thanksgiving or a comfort food, but I only get them when home for the holidays with my Grandma.
Regarding #2, I signed up for AMEX card two weeks ago and finally received it in the mail the other day and proceeded to activate it. Then I went to my mailbox and got my mail and noticed a junk mail for AMEX promotion for the same card I just activated. The bonus was $250. I called the rep immediately and they were glad to switch over the promotion to my card. So simple!
My favorite budget comfort food is mashed potatoes and carrots (both mashed and mixed together) with a splash of ginger or cinnamon. The spices give the popular dish a nice twist and make it more nutritious than your typical mashed potatoes. Yumm....
my favorite budget Thanksgiving dish is the mashed potatoes. I can usually get a 5lb (sometimes even 10lb) bag on sale for $0.69 this time of year. I add a tiny bit of butter, dab of sour cream, and milk (salt & pepper & garlic too) and have fluffy potatoes for not much money
Sometimes you think you are being frugal when you buy cheaper cost items but in the end you end up spending more money because cheaper usually means it will not last as long as you want it to last. When it breaks down or become unusable, then you have no choice to spend the money again. To save money, you must become a smart spender. There will be situations where it makes sense to spend more to buy a better quality product.

With potatoes on sale right now, homemade garlic mashed potatoes are hard to beat. They are cheap, yummy, and comforting.
Good tips.. I use #6 religiously!
Frugal=library, not bookstore.

Thanks for mentioning my "Earning Extra Money at Work" post Ashley, I'm still kicking myself about that $2500 I missed out on.

Yeah, I really need to find a new job.

#2 is a great idea! my friends and i have been talking about doing one for a while now.
