  • How Low Can You Go? Taking the No Heat Challenge   16 years 12 weeks ago

There's a huge difference between radiant and forced air heat. Our last house had a furnace and 65 degrees was pushing it. The new house has radiators, and we keep it at 60 and are comfortable. We did a heat challenge earlier this year and stuck it out to about 54 degrees. The problem is that what's comfortable when you're wearing layers doesn't work when you're showering. Our long-term plan is to heavy up the heat in the bathroom with radiant in-floor heating and a heat lamp for nakey time.

Babies are not just fine but better off with cooler air, barring unusual respiratory problems. You need to dress them warmly, but it doesn't take a lot, just lightweight cotton under and a fleece coverall and something on their noggins.

Christmas 2009 I started giving everyone's "present" as a donation in their name. As a present to the whole family, I sponsored a child with World Vision for us all to write to and bond with. I made a donation to an animal shelter in a friend's name as her Christmas present. I made another donation in a New Orleans friend's name to a local charlity to help rebuild there. It was a hit with everyone because it was personal and also so positive. Also, I use coupons to maximize savings and freebies on grocery and personal care items and donate them to local shelters. Closets get cleaned out and donated to Goodwill a few times a year. It's second nature to give and every penny I save with coupons allows me to give more. My husband just got in on the spirit of giving for the first time with the Haiti crisis and I'm so proud of him for getting in the spirit of sharing with others.

I just recently started taking prescription meds, and have been looking for ways to cut that cost. My doctor suggested splitting my pills because she wants me to take 1.5 of them at each dose. I will definitely ask her about doubling the scrip so I can make on prescription last two months!

My husband was laid off about 8 months ago, but his unemployment just ran out, and I just started working after being out of work for a little over a year. We're still in survival mode, and likely will be until well over a year after my husband starts working again, whenever that will be.

I would give time if I had it, but right now, I work full time, then pick up errands and freelance in my spare time. There's currently a food drive at work, and while I've tried to consider what 1 can of food I could take to the drive, my husband astutely pointed out, "We're 2 steps from going to the food bank to get that back."

So yeah, just about keeping eyeballs above water. And it's really hard, because we usually give time and money to targeted organizations we hold near and dear to our hearts. I see it as collecting on some of the karma we've put out there over the years. Let's hope next year is better.

I am a believer in the " give and get it back tenfold" school of thought. I give of my time/talent via volunteering throughout the year, which costs me nothing but time and a little gas. I do give monies as well, but am particular to whom I give to. I gave to Haiti, my company matched all donations so that was a way I could stretch my dollars to help. And, I recently gave to the SPCA when a friends parent passed and they asked for donations in leiu of flowers.

Experts recommend you split a pill and take each half sequentially instead of splitting 30 for the month and taking them without regard to which half you take when. This averages out the dose since as often as not the halves are not exact. Many drugs cost the same price no matter what the dose so splitting does make sense when they are intended to help you to regulate a chronic condition.
This is a very good post on this important subject. Thanks for writing it.

Frankly I don't go below 65 during the day(I work from home). Even at that temperature often all I want to do is curl up under a blanket and stay warm. Layering clothes doesn't change that. So some of us tend to go into hibernation mode based on the ambient temp in the house:-)

It is 6 below zero actual temp and due to be 35below zero with windchills tonight, so I am going to have to pass. We have actually had to plug in a space heater in the great room because the cold is seeping in from everywhere. Thankfully we have electric blankets, but not turning the heat off or down until it gets to the point where your wet hair won't freeze if you step outside.

Talk to your doctor if you are having trouble with medication costs, they may be able to give a splitable pill, change your schedual to ever other day (I did this with one med, took a higher dose every other day, per DOCTOR'S advice), switch you to a cheaper med, or give you samples to stretch out what you have to buy. I have always found my doctors very helpful with this. If you are on a lot of meds you probably see the doctor pretty frequently anyway so talk to them -- calling ahead and telling the nurse you would you like to discuss cost issues at the next appointment can be helpful as well. However, don't try to get creative on your own, make sure your doctor knows what you are doing and ok's it.

  • Defining Success: If You Don't Know What You Want, You Won't Know When You've Gotten It   16 years 13 weeks ago

person 2(p2) does have a goal-to have a safe and easy going life. his destination is laymanville; therefore, p2 plots out his course to laymanville. p2 arrives in laymanville and it is exactly as p2 imagined it would be, safe and easy. however, p2 inevitably realizes that he must survive and so to do that p2 must collect provisions-new goal.

p2 realizes that provisions must be found so p2 goes out to search. the search lasts two days. p2 has barely collected enough provisions to survive and p2 is exhausted. quickly, p2 realizes that to live an easy life is not an easy task to undertake, especially alone.

soon, p2's mind is clouded and p2 is forced to think about the next step. darkness envelops the daylight and the animals of the night take their place. suddenly, the environment does not the seem safe. strange noises replace a soothing calm atmosphere and paranoia sets in. p2 now reasses the situation and comes to the conclusion that safe and easy were only illusions he created in his mind. there is only an appearance of safe and easy but when one looks closer safety and easy are replaced.

point that i am trying to make is that both persons in your explanation have goals. one chooses to go after a worthy goal(career, higher education, the works) i presume and the other an unworthy goal(to not have goal or never accomplish worthy goals).

life is not easy. there is a constant never-ending sruggle to survive by defying the elements. just because one feels good or bad about doing something doesnt mean that survival is out of the equation or success and failure are looming around the corner. if your killed while try to accomplish your goal, did you fail at your goal? depends on what the goal is. for example, if your goal was to not die, then you failed. however, if your goal was something else besides not to die, then no you did not fail to accomplish the task at hand.

i understand the pleasure to post notes of inspiration and misleading explanations that may be as clear as day in one's mind but turns out to be harder to explain. however, i suggest that you try the following goal: critically analyze before concluding. you are on the right track but you have a few holes to fill.

Seal the gaps can really pay off. Go around and feel you will find out where your heat is leaking. Since we in out home spend a majority of our time in one room we simply turn the heat way down and use an electric space heater in that room. The cost per BTU for electricity is not much more than propane.
