  • Ask the Readers: Have You Ever Re-Gifted?   16 years 21 weeks ago

I am as frugal as they come, and even so, I would not regift. It is something I have thought about and something that I decided was not for me. With sales like they are, you can get some really good deals and I just don't like the thought of taking a gift from someone else and just passing it down the line. It reminds me of hand me downs and nobody likes those.

I do firmly believe in things like Freecycle.org where you can recycle items so they don't end up in the landfill. If you join your local freecycle group, you can end up giving items that you no longer need to people who really could use them. You may end up with some great things you need as well. Is that regifting? I don't think so. I think of regifting as giving an actual gift to someone as a present. Freecycle is a bit different than that. So what to do with something you will never use? Give it to someone who can use it or donate it to charity.

For me, I just can't regift. It is a personal decision I guess.. :-)

I totally regift. In fact, I won a bunch of baby stuff from some giveaways that are going in my in-laws gift basket! Is that aweful? I don't think so.

I use paypal with funding through my credit card. It gives me double the sense of security. I have my credit card info hidden by paypal and both have fraud protection.

I'm definitely a regifter, but with a few considerations. I prefer to purchase gifts inexpensively throughout the year, but when I receive something I don't like or won't use, I will regift to someone is a separate social circle than the original gifter. Regifting helps to keep the clutter in check.

  • How to Answer 23 of the Most Common Interview Questions   16 years 21 weeks ago

Thank you! I have an interview tomorrow, and will be practicing these techniques tonight so I will be calm for those (and more) questions throughout the hour-long interview!

I have especially benifited from others' comments.
    Thanks everyone!

If I could pass some advice - it's always best to act natural. Don't feel less than worthy or talked down to. Remember they called you for the interview - they want you there. So be comfortable. If you don't get the job, it's not the perfect match for you. Don't get discouraged - the perfect job for you will land in your lap! So be yourself!

I'm a regifter, and I am proud of it! The key for me is knowing who will not be offended at a regift, and who needs something new in the package. If I don't want/need/like something, and I know that a friend will really love it & appreciate, off to them it goes. I was once offended when my MIL gave me a book as a gift, but only after she read it first, but hey - I've grown up a lot since then :-)

  • Ask the Readers: Have You Ever Re-Gifted?   16 years 21 weeks ago

I have regifted, but only if I know the recipient will appreciate the gift more than I did.

  • Ask the Readers: Have You Ever Re-Gifted?   16 years 21 weeks ago

I just did my first and only regift last Christmas - I'd been given a $100 Pottery Barn gift card, but I'm not a Pottery Barn fan. So I checked the balance, made sure it was valid, and gave it to my brother who just bought his first house (because he really IS the Pottery Barn type).

  • Ask the Readers: Have You Ever Re-Gifted?   16 years 21 weeks ago

I often enter free giveaways for things that I know a certain friend or family member would enjoy. If I receive a gift I know I won't use and I know someone who will use or enjoy it I will regift it. Otherwise it would get thrown away of gather dust somewhere. I do not regift used things or thing I have had for a long period of time unless it is an item with a personal significance to the person I am giving it to like an item someone has always admired.

I got married and received, among other things, dozens of unwanted and unrequested gifts. We returned whatever we could, and the rest we decided to re-gift. We ended up savings around $300 over the next few months of summer weddings and birthdays.

The one regret... we received two teapots, so we gave one away as a birthday gift. A week later, my wife broke ours. I think I'm about ready to bite the bullet and buy her another -she's given me grief for over a year!

I never have, but I'm pretty sure my sister gave me a fondue set that she got from her MIL.

  • Can Your Spending Patterns Affect Your Credit?   16 years 21 weeks ago

I completely agree that this shouldn't be too much of a surprise to people. Everything today is done digitally and there is a footprint with every digital step you take; credit cards are the most obvious of all tractable data but really just one of the many ways consumer's data can be collected. It seems that people do not care though. According to StackMeUp.com, the average American's credit card debt is $5,200.

  • Beyond Tuition: Helping Out With College Expenses   16 years 21 weeks ago

There is no getting around the fact that everyone needs some type of schooling after high school graduation. Just ask some of the thousands that were laid off after working for a company for 20 years. They are going back to school to get educated in order to get a job in a different field.
My kids are only 6 and 3, but i am adament that they will continue their schooling. I have begun saving now for that time.
But the most important thing to keep in mind, is that a 4 year college is not the only option. There are technical schools and apprenticeships. My ex-husband did an apprenticeship out of high school that was 5 years. When he completed the schooling and on the job time, he walked away making $40 an hour with full benefits and a great pension. He still had classes he had to enroll in that were once a week. He had the tuition, books, and other fees. Plus working and raising a family.
Back to main point...Some sort of schooling needs to be done after high school. Technical, 4 year college, apprenticeship, etc. And no matter what the choice, there are still loads of tuition, books, and fees that eat up their income. So any help to someone doing this, would be greatly appreciated.
In this day and age with everyone wanting instant gratification, those who choose to go to school should be commended. And helped along the way. Someday they will turn around and do the same for someone else.

  • Ask the Readers: Have You Ever Re-Gifted?   16 years 21 weeks ago

I have definitely regifted. Especially during the holiday season. My friends and I also end up exchanging gifts using the same gift bags we've all used for years. We just keep passing them back and forth.

The article was great but it was difficult to read as there were not appropriate spacing between words. For a first time reader, it defenitely makes me think "shifty" and not on the up and up.

It should be obvious to everyone how monitored we are. I'm not even talking conspiracy theory stuff here. It's just common business sense. If it's electronic and your identity is know you are being tracked. From what you charge at the supermarket, what watch on cable, the websites you visit, the e-mails/texts/voicemails you send, the train/bus passes you swipe, the e-z pass in your car, your cell phone, etc. All of this info is tracked, stored and processed for someone's profit. It all falls under "market research" or "customer demographics". The more a corporation knows about you the better they can pitch products to you. Think Google and all it's ventures(Wave, Cloud Computing, Navigator, etc). They handle countless volumes of data, about you, for "free". Nothing is free. Think about it.

Should you put on your aluminum foil hats and crawl into a cave? No, of course not. Just be aware that the world is smaller then you realize.

If a gift isn't a good fit, it is either sold on amazon or ebay, or if too inexpensive to sell online, donated to a local thrift store.

Fortunately, the need to do this does not happen very often!

  • Ask the Readers: Have You Ever Re-Gifted?   16 years 21 weeks ago

Oh yes, I regift. But my favorite regifting story is last Christmas when I took my free Harlequin romance novels, which I received for signing up to be a reviewer for them, and gifted the books to my aunt who is a voracious romance novel reader. Luckily I am very skilled at being able to read a book without even cracking the binding, so no one ever knew until now.

  • Beyond Tuition: Helping Out With College Expenses   16 years 21 weeks ago

My daughter just got accepted to college this morning and so this is very timely! She waited will she was good and ready, so I think her maturity will help her make good decisions about spending while in school.

I'll add a pro-school opinion: I agree that college may not be the best path for everyone, and is certainly costly, but I think it can be beneficial even if you don't know what you want to do with your life. Four years will pass anyway, so why not have a degree at the end? (and yes, likely some amount of debt) My experience in the workplace is that a degree, ANY degree, is better than none - the work is specialized, but my co-workers come from a variety of educational backgrounds. And college teaches much more than just the subject you're studying. It was the best investment I ever made - and yes, I'm still paying for it an embarrassing number of years later!!

  • Money in Your Yard: How to Sell Palm Trees For Cash   16 years 21 weeks ago

This is very common to see in the area I live in (Bay Area)
Some people who build large houses want immediate landscaping.
Palm trees are popular as well as very old olive trees!
We have a neighbor who paid $10,000 per palm. Wow.
