Thanks for the link to the Straus site. I live in San Diego and was about to look for a local farmer (good luck here, we are almost like LA now).

I just watched the movie The Corporation. I highly recommend it to everyone reading this blog post. The government can't be trusted (i.e. FDA) nor can large corporations. They are concerned about the bottom line and for the most part are on par with psychopath behavior across the board.

WE THE PEOPLE need to stand up and say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. We are done with the politicians and the weatlhy running the world. They all lie and have hidden agendas.

  • What It Really Costs to Own a Home   16 years 21 weeks ago

    Nice job, all good points!

Our carpet needs replace (the cost of having 1 crazy dog and 2 active kids), but I'm going to delay that cost until next year.

I've lived in my house for a little more than 10 years, and now my front yard landscaping need redone (aesthetic reasons)... While this is a once in 10 years expense, it's still expensive.

Congrats on being mortgage-free! I've started counting down the months until I'll mortgage free too. See "My Mortgage Countdown" if your interested... I'll be mortgage free in February 2010, and I can't wait!

I think that there have always been people who wanted work/life balance (maybe there are more now). But what has changed (perhaps) is that employers value those employees now whereas they didn't value them in earlier generations.

  • How to Survive (and Thrive!) in a Job You Hate   16 years 21 weeks ago

Sallied just out of curiosity what country do you work in that doesn't have sick leave???

I've done both heavy labour intensive work and now I "sit in front of a monitor". This shouldn't be a competition about whose got the worst job and therefore the right to complain about it. People who sit in front of monitors working in jobs that they can't stand or are bored of can suffer mentally from burnout which could in some cases be worse than injuries sustained in labouring work. I personally felt I achieved more in my labouring work than what I been doing lately and definitely appreciated that Friday evening beer a hell of lot more after a hard days labouring.

I think the best thing to do if you want to stay in a job you find boring is to enjoy things outside work. take up a hobby or go for some night classes doing something you enjoy. I agree with Sarah's advice to remember your motivations for working there, if you have none look for a new job.

  • “I see dumb people” – Learn to cold-read like a so-called “psychic.”   16 years 21 weeks ago

    I could understand the resentment.
And, how a lot of psychics do take advantage of people.
    Believe me I do understand.
I am not talking new age mumbo jumble.
I would prefer to say I am a Christian
I am a psychic and comedian, my name I won’t tell you is Richard Spasoff.
Anyways, I have a free complimentary reading; I do on my show during the week to help people out with their problems.
Basically we all have the ability to be psychic.
    I‘ll teach you how
It not a special thing, you just have to listen to what God is saying too us.
That may sound crazy, but I am referring to that inner voice you hear when you get a warning about something or someone.
Call me on my show(blogtalkradio.com/psychicmediumspasoff/ sometime or email me at kspazradio@yahoo.com

For twenty five years, I have been a angelic psychic medium and comedian to the underground of society. Wandering the concrete jungle, meeting with prostitutes, strippers, homeless and the criminal organization known as the Mafia, my work has been wide range and has touched many lives.

My titles are many: I am a spiritual counselor, psychic, dance choreographer, holistic health practitioner . You may ask how could I do this all ? I sometimes wonder myself. My life has always been one that has unfolded , creating a path of faith for me to follow in God’s ultimate arrangement of my life. I never knew where my angels would lead me, but I had some idea of what I was suppose to do. I was put on this earth to help many types of people in need.

Most of my life was shrouded in darkness. Sex, drugs, murder and mayhem were spread out like a Las Vegas $2.99 buffet . To me this situation was living. As my friend Don Adams would say (from “Get Smart”), “and loving every minute of it.” Don’t misunderstand me; I wasn’t involved with this activity. In fact, this activity scared me to death, but at the same time scared the life into me. It kept me alive, giving me a calling to live. My vocation, my passion was in helping people. I was there to help, to pray and to calm down people during their time of crisis. Even though, I was walking in dangerous company, I felt protected by my angels. I felt that I was always guided to the people I needed to be with.

  • Book Review: How Gen Y Employees Can Save You Money and Grow Your Business   16 years 21 weeks ago

As a Gen Y myself (I'm 23, smack bang in the middle!), I can say that when it comes to work, the most important thing is how work works for ME, not how I work for work.

I study (postgraduate MA) part time, and I work two flexible part time jobs. One's three days a week, the other's one day a week - and I can essentially choose which days I want to work. Sure I don't get paid a great deal at either (~$20 an hour), but I get to structure my week the way I want it. If I want a three day weekend, I can have it. If I want a day off in the middle of the week, I can have it. If I want to take a day off to go shoppng with a girlfriend, I can do it.

The last thing I want in my life is the 9 to 5, five days a week, even if I get paid $100,000 for it!

  • 3 Ways to Ban Spam and Stop Junk   16 years 21 weeks ago

I started on a no mail project about a year ago - I travel for work and spending 3 hours going through mail after however many hours trying to get home was unhealthy. I found that you have to call every single catalog, etc. My routine now is to get the mail, make 1-2 calls requesting to be removed, repeat daily. It has worked very well but it isn't permanent, some of them have gotten me from other lists. My tips are 1-) NEVER have anything sent to your home address. Pay for a box, then you can stand there and throw it all out before you ever get back in your car 2-) be very judicious about ordering online or from catalogs. Make sure they have a very public and proven commitment not to sell your info like Amazon has 3-) don't give out your address or phone, or any other information robotically upon request. Honestly, why does your hair salon need your address? Why does your doctor need your social security number? 3-) don't order pizzas delivered. Go get them. You won't be sorry. We tried a test name on a hunch and found that one pizza generated about 10 unsolicited mailings for everything from gym memberships to carpet cleaning

  • Get More Bang for Your Membership Buck!   16 years 21 weeks ago

Here in wisconsin, the Betty Brinn Childrens Museum offers a free membership to anyone who makes less than $40,000. With kids, these places make an afternoon trip seem like a great vacation. Its free. They are always changing the items. Kids are learning. You cant beat that. Pack a bag lunch or healthy snacks for the ride home and you got yourself an awesome afternoon and tired kiddos at night. So anything in your area, call and check their income guidelines. That goes for rec centers, community centers, YMCA. Always call and check before making any plans.

  • Funny Taste Mystery: Using Google for Medical Diagnoses   16 years 21 weeks ago

This is sooooo great. I agree that folks should be very careful regarding medical advice via the internet but..... if you use good sense and not take everything as fact it can really help.
I just had this issue. Bought some pine nuts at the store, added them to a salad and then it started. The very next morning and again until today. So I took a look before calling my Dr.
Yep, this is the issue and I checked the source, they are from China! No more of that stuff for us. Thank you for your comments!

  • 5 Great Choices for Free Online Data Storage   16 years 21 weeks ago

I checked on SkyDrive and the free limit of 25 gb of storage was appealing but the 50 mb file size limit for uploads was just too small for me so I decided to keep looking. I guess if all your files are under 50 mb then SkyDrive would work well for you but if you have some big files... keep looking.

  • Book review: Towers of Gold   16 years 21 weeks ago

Shame on you for not capitalizing Jewish in your otherwise well written article about Towers of Gold which I am reviewing for my book club. I asked the guide at the Erhmann-Hellman summer home at Lake Taoe to include the word Jewish when she talked about Hellman being a German immigrant. Too often we only hear that someone is Jewish when they have done something bad i.e. Jewish fianancier Bernie Madoff.

  • Can You Survive with One Car in Suburbia?   16 years 22 weeks ago

I must add that my husband has a high quality well-maintained bicycle with a trailer for the little ones or groceries and the children also have quality maintained bicycles, so if we need to go anywhere and don't want to walk, we are able to with no problem as long as weather permits but we also have appropriate rain gear we can use if needed. Our house is also in the heart of the city, within blocks of our schools, doctor's office, hospital minor emergency, grocery store and convenience store so those are also factors that work well with our situation.

  • Can You Survive with One Car in Suburbia?   16 years 22 weeks ago

My husband and I are very involved in Boy Scouts and at our childrens' schools and we make it work with one mini van. The weekends my husband goes camping as an assistant scoutmaster in the Boy Scout troop with our two older boys or as a den leader with our younger son's pack and I have no car we make sure I have all supplies I need and these are good times to get things done around the house and spend quality time with the kids. I've canned fruits and vegetables from the garden because I was home and wanted to do it but never had the time before and that was rewarding. My kids look forward to the one on one time we spend while they are traveling abroad on their camping adventures. I have to say some people obviously judge us by the comments they make or the way they react when they realize we have one vehicle, but one woman in our Boy Scout troop has three vehicles, one a brand new SUV, and she constantly complains about having no money, gets mad when we have fun nights that cost over $5 for the boys as a reward for their selflessness throughout the month doing good deeds during scout meetings and outings, and her son had to miss camp because of her inability to manage her money well. Our van is paid off, well-maintained and the insurance is quite affordable, plus we have money left over for my husband & the kids to go to camp every summer and many other times throughout the year creating irreplaceable memories for not only our sons but everyone else's sons too. Let's face it, children grow up entirely too fast!

One thing you also might consider to reduce/eliminate telemarketers is to dump your home phone. If you have a cell phone, you probably don't even need a landline.

As far as I can tell, telemarketers have not yet been able to infiltrate cell phone numbers.

Once we dumped our home phone and got MagicJack, we virtually have no telemarketers in our lives whatsoever.

  • When to Use Savings to Pay Off Debt   16 years 22 weeks ago

I have a mortgage right now with mortgage company, amount is 105,308.09, payments are 659.82, right now there is a escrow of about 200.00. 52.33 is added to 607.49 till escrow is paid off. right now 50.00 of the 659.82 goes to the mortgage itself, the rest is interest. I would like to have more go towards the mortgage to bring it down faster. I have asked them about lowering the intetest, they said no. I would like to be able to do something to lower the interest. Right now I make 684.95 every two weeks.

  • The cost of a free ride - why not to use a buyer's agent   16 years 22 weeks ago

My wife and I have been considering buying a home. We watch the multilist and craigslist on a regular basis. When we see a home that we have a question about, I email the listing agent. What annoys me is that any agent I email a question to expects to immediately start acting as my buyer's agent. They drive me nuts. I am not ready to buy. When I am ready, I will find an agent that is not going to blow me off because I don't come with a letter from the bank telling them I am a qualified buyer.

Another thing that drives me nuts is when I ask about a listing only to be told...That one is gone, but I can help you find a similar one. Guess what mister "Bait and Switch", I wouldn't buy a dog house from you. Take that stupid listing off of Yahoo, Craigslist, ect.

I don't want someone finding a home for me. I am a big boy who can read the multilist myself. When I find a home that I want, I will be ready for an agent. They can keep the sales pitch for someone else. What I want is someone to take care of stuff like hiring and inspector, title company, helping me get my ducks in a row for the contract.

The idea that somehow a real estate agent is going to find me a listing that I can't find for myself on the multilist doesn't make sense. This industry has taken great pains to keep information out of the hands of buyers. The multilist scam is a joke. I have seen the lengths that these companies go to keep the information private. If a selling agent wants to sell a home why wouldn't they make everything available to the public?

As far as the whole professionals deserve professional pay garbage. Does this profession require a 4 year degree? Why does a real estate agent think that they are worth more than a doctor per hour? If I find my own home, how many hours is a buyer's agent really going to spend on my deal? What does that work out to hourly. My guess is that you expect to get paid more than my doctor and I am sure their insurance and overhead is quite a bit higher. To me this is nothing but another overpaid profession with lobbyists to push laws that protect thier cash cow.

Anybody who is involved in MLM... is anyone net profitable? My understanding is that the vast vast majority of distributors lose money (assuming the intent is to sell the items).

    Any truth to that?
