The problem with aggressively paying off your debt is that you can cut out so much enjoyment out of life. I'm not as debt-heavy as a lot of people, just a very manageable car payment. I could spend every cent not going to food and shelter on the car payment, but I'd be miserable the whole time. Going by the amortization table, paying it off as aggressively as possible will only save me a few hundred dollars over the course of the loan, and that's not worth it to me to not go out ever or buy myself something nice once in a while.
And if you don't have some money in savings, and some financial emergency comes up where you could use those savings to pay for it, you just go deeper into debt.
these are very good pointers but i think that you should have included more points on how to avoid overspending cash, like the eating out bit. Personally i think that those people that are not responsible enough with their cash and credit cards should cut them up because that plastic gives the naive that feeling of being rich and that you have the ability to buy whatever you want. I mean lets be real, isn't it the reason that most are bogged down in debt??
You've touched upon a great concept, motivation. Without it no one will change. By asking yourself those questions you just my find the reason you are going to change.
I know that homemade stuffing is cheaper, b/c depending on how you make it, its mostly breadcrumbs anyways. Use the stale stuff--that's what its designed for.
Homemade pies are chaeper as well.
Also, the head count is a key too. Sure you want to make sure that you have enough food, but having enough for Turkey Day plus a week's worth of leftovers is not really necessary.
Plan your work, then work your plan. Works every time.
My friend tried the blow dryer method with C02 about a year ago on his car and dent never came back. So your absolutely wrong on your analysis. I think its time to change your profession?
At the time of writing this I am 23 years old. Personally I have moved away from the great credit score hype and went the ways of CASH. I see many of you noted a benefit of having a mortgage is more cash for emergencies, college, ect. Shouldn’t all of those be in different savings/investing accounts anyways. At this time I have a fully funded emergency fund and no debt. Paid off schools loans, I never got a hand out, just worked a lot. Now I am investing to be able to pay CASH for a home in the next 10-15 years.
This little tax break everyone keeps talking about, is it really worth it if you are paying almost double in interest rates by the time, I am betting most of your 30 year mortgages are paid anyways?

we must not get caught up in the preparations and so many other things that we forget what is really important with this holiday; spending time with those we love and being thankful for the good things in our lives. The food must not be the most expensive to enjoy a short time with our loved ones
Great post Paul! When December rolls around we will be buying gift cards for fuel, groceries, and two restaurants to cover our two eating-out meals for the month. We may do a mix of envelopes and gift cards and see what we like the best.
It's true, you don't need much detergent to get things really clean. I always water down the face cleaner that I use because it seems like a waste using it straight (plus, it is too harsh on my skin).
It's pretty amazing to think about how expensive raising a child is. I am 22, the 'baby' stage of my life seems like the very distant future (although I think that 'distant' feeling is just my wilful denial because I am enjoying this stage in my life a lot).
Sounds like a great place to find some bargains! To the Dump, to the Dump, to the Dump, Dump, Dump - your husband sounds hilarious ;) I hope I will be able to get that tune out of my head soon.
This post is a sham and offers completely unreliable facts about what a creditor's rights are with respect to trying to collect on a debt. Every statement under each Section 1-9 contains falsities and out wrong legal inaccuracies. I would not trust this person or site. Nuff said.
How much shampoo is required? None. Unless you manage to get actual dirt of some kind in your hair. The oil secreted by the scalp actually cleans the hair; human hair is self-cleaning! Washing all that oil out with shampoo on a regular basis prompts your scalp to produce more oil, which is why if you regularly wash with shampoo and then stop for a while your hair will get greasy (and probably itchy and smelly). After a while though, your scalp adjusts, and reverts to its natural state of producing just enough cleansing oil.
I haven't washed my hair with anything other than clean water for over a year, and it's no more greasy or dirty than it was a day after my last shampoo. I discovered this because I am sensitive to one of the ingredients in most shampoos and so using shampoo caused me to have an itchy, flaky scalp. Since a month or so after I stopped, I've had no more itches and far fewer flakes.
I've heard a lot about "perfectly good food" being thrown out...
I am a current Trader Joe's employee, and if I were to say to a paying customer that an apple with a bruise on it is "perfectly good" I would be told that they will only spend their hard earned money on a perfect apple.
As a grocery store employee, am I really being blamed for being wasteful by discarding what what my customers refuse to buy? Who is really doing the wasting?
i have been shopping there for a few years and echo some of the above comments:
shipping can be extremely slow, sometimes as long as 8 weeks.
once in a while they end up not having an item after i order it and aren't great about communicating on existing orders - but when i contact them i am always offered a refund or a credit to a future order.
the response time for customer service has so far been quite excellent.
read the comments from previous purchasers before buying an item and you can often get the best use. for example - i purchased a spark style flint and steel firestarter with the knowledge that someone else had found it worked better after scraping some of the paint off the steel - and it worked very well once i did that.
You are right! trying alternatives makes all the sense in the worl. The turkey and the wine are the 2 best examples, and there are other ways, just for thinking of them.

hope some people know how to deal with the peer pressure out there in the real world!
Hi, I searched the database you have given for the above hack, but could not find it. I appreciate if you can give me the code for it. Many thanks,

I also love the advice to get insurance quotes. I see people all the time save hundreds of dollars in a matter of minutes just by reviewing their insurance. I wrote a blog post called "6 Reasons To Buy Insurance Online" http://evolutionofwealth.com/2009/11/03/6-reasons-to-buy-your-insurance-...
What do you think?
I would also add to that list "going homemade".

Good advice, thanks. It's amazing where you can save money if you just think about it for a bit.
Everyone seems to be saying to be "it's all about networking" - I am shy. This is not good news for me at all ;)

I don't bother with Black Friday. I don't believe it's really a deal.
