Many of my favorites have already been mentioned. I'm glad I'm not as strange and gross as I thought. I also like popcorn, made on the stove, with "experimental" toppings - buffalo sauce, kettle style, italian seasonings, I've tried many. And gooey burritos: I usually have a can of refried beans in the cabinet and tortillas in the freezer. Defrost the tortilla for a few seconds. Add a scoop of beans, a slice of deli cheese, and a packet of Taco Bell Fire Sauce (you know you have those lying around). mmm... gooey, salty, spicy. I use wheat tortilla and fat-free vegetarian refried beans, so it's not half bad.

But for me, nothing beats a $2.50 slice of hot pizza from the corner pizza joint.

My piano-teacher mother insists on using only rubbing alcohol on a cloth to clean the ivories. Never anything with abrasive, even as mild as toothpaste.

  • Is living on one income a status symbol?   17 years 45 weeks ago

Finally, some reason in the general discussion that followed the article. Thank you!

Though I have 2 kids, managing 1 income well can be as productive & satisfying as living on 2 salaries. In many cases, the working spouse can zoom up the career ladder with the added support and time provided by a spouse at home.

(There's no way my husband could have earned his Ph.D. while working full-time and both of us renovating houses on the weekend...if I had also been holding down a traditional career.)

While the SAHW does give up some future job security in case of divorce, the relaxed lifestyle and free time for companionship can actually strengthen the marriage. It's a calculated risk.

My mother was a stay-at-home mom, and she doesn't get compensated for her volunteer work now that we are out of the house - but I never thought of it as status, either. I think it's a little different when you spend your day getting massages than when you, you know, cook and clean and bake and garden and volunteer for the cancer society. Apples and oranges.

  • Is living on one income a status symbol?   17 years 45 weeks ago

Yes, we live on one income and are digging our way out of the debt we incurred when we were both working. We consider living on one income a necessity, not a luxury as our kids need one of us at home. Sure, I guess you could say it is a "status symbol" but not one of luxury but one of common sense (and we are making 1/2 (approx) of the so called "carbon footprint" that two people working outside the home cause). ;-)

There are so many things that need doing to keep a household running smoothly. For years and years wives did just that. This is not a new concept. We have promised women they could have it all, but that is a lie. Everyone is happier if the home is a safe haven and usually women are the ones who make it so. I am thrilled to be a stay at home wife with all the kids grown and moved on. My husband loves to have me here as well. We are not rich but we are happy!

I'm sorry, is this SERIOUS!? Because those snacks are crazy nasty. I'd rather spend the extra $4 on Doritos than eat a rolled up slice of off-brand Kraft cheese with a squirt of ketchup and a pickle. SICK.

  • Is living on one income a status symbol?   17 years 45 weeks ago

The idea of two people working, yet living on one income, seems quite different than what the article is talking about. I think many (well, in the personal finance world, not in general) live on one income. If you can live on one income, and both spouses have good earning power, it makes very little sense for one to stay home. Think of all they could be putting away into savings if both worked. (Well, you know how much, because you are)

Throw in kids, and that is a different argument.

I think it is weird to have the wife stay home with no kids, but only because I never knew anyone that did.

My husband pulls in a very respectable salary. My skills and area of study are not well compensated in the marketplace. So I stay at home and to things like garden, bake our bread, can our garden produce, keep laying hens, cook all meals from scratch, home maintenance, etc. The vast majority of the housework, yardwork, and cleaning fall on me. I also earn a little income here and there with casual paid labor, selling my breads, writing, etc. I give back to the community too through regular volunteer work at a food bank. I don't think I'm lazy. And I don't think my lifestyle is a status symbol. I'm far from glamorous.

Maybe there are well pampered stay at home wives, but some of us are using it to save money. By staying at home, I can prevent a lot of unnecessary expenditures. I have time to do a lot of traditional tasks that our grandmothers took for granted. We don't need another vehicle for me to get to my job. I also have the resource of time to invest in our social network, which gives us many ways of saving money, ranging from carpooling to borrowing many tools we otherwise might buy, gleaning, etc.

for your bottom line though. Much cheaper than ordering half of the Taco Bell menu.

  • Is living on one income a status symbol?   17 years 45 weeks ago
    YES

My household live on one salary, however we both work because we prefer it. Also I think Im a little to young to retire. However, as you said if one loses their job, we are still financially intact. And that's is a good feeling.

It just shows that both of you can manage the money properly

    > 1. (...) going out and buying a bunch of food all at once is a uniquely North American experience (...) Allow yourself to shop like a European, if need be. On your way home from work, stop by the store and purchase enough food for the next meal or two.

That sounds like an unmarried European without children. My (German) parents went once a week to a cheap retailer and bought groceries for the family in bulk. They did it in the seventies and they do it today, albeit on a smaller scale. They were and are not alone in doing this.

    2. (...) The idea that a meal consists of a medium-sized hunk of meat, a bland starch, and some kind of green veggie is a very Anglo-American concept,

and a German one and Swedish one. I don't know about all of Europe. I agree with you, however, that you don't have to eat meat at every meal and you don't even HAVE to eat veggies every day.

Toothpaste is also great for fixing minor scratches on CDs or DVDs. If you apply a small dab of toothpaste to a damp cloth and then gently rub with a circular motion along the grain of the disc (versus against the grain, from center to edge), you can safely smooth out the scratches.

Hm, the way it's worded, they almost make the women sound like concubines. I have to admit, I'd be weirded out to not have SOME kind of day job, be it in the general workforce, self-employment, or motherhood. Then again, maybe these women are extraordinary volunteers. None of our business how they want to live their lives, though.

My friends in high school taught me how to make a quick and easy dish wish instant ramen. Just boil the noodles as usual, strain them, mix in butter, and add half of the sauce packet and mix that in as well. Yummy and fast, albeit unhealthy.

Double foil up into a "pan"
Line the pan with saltine crackers
    Top the crackers with cheese
    Top the cheese with parmesian
    Broil until bubbly and voila!

  • Why Is "Rich" Often Equated With "Evil"?   17 years 45 weeks ago

I think it's not as much a matter of wealth as a lack of personal responsibility and the perceptions and motivations because of it. The "evil rich" feel entitled to act irresponsibly or harmfully because they feel entitled to do so, and/or they have the means to buy themselves out of any consequences that will occur, if any. Wealth and power will inevitably give some a certain level of leniency when it comes to punishment.

Does that mean money and wealth are evil? No. The individual is ultimately responsible for their actions, although many do not want to acknowledge this. Those who understand that their actions have consequences for others are the philanthropists and activists that use their means to help others.

And this attitude of not being personally responsible for one's actions is not singular to the wealthy. You can find people of all classes who have this belief or code of behavior. It's not about the grand gestures that makes a person "good" or "evil", but the daily actions that defines them.

At the frat house in college where I used to hang out, the best drunk food was deep-fried pizza rolls. Also super-buttery quesadillas.

I know it's dangerous to mess with hot oil when you're wasted, but maybe you can get your designated-driver friend to run the Fryolator for you.

    Now I'm hungry...and thirsty.

Tooth paste is great. Aside from using it for a clean mouth, tooth paste is my go to medicine for bug bite relief. I've been using it this way since I was a kid and will probably continue to for the rest of my life. It works great.

Thank you so much for this post -- you probably saved some lives with this information!

I stopped watching those 20/20 type shows years ago because I got sick of their scare-mongering stories and their focus on sensationalism and violence. If I hadn't seen this post here, I would've never known about this serious issue. I've forwarded this to everyone I know.

    Take care.

The key to the zit thing is to use the toothpaste on an unruptured pimple. I, too, was told to use it on a massive zit that appeared on my chin when I was 13 - I did so, and it became massively infected. I, too, still have a scar from it.

I like to use aspirin for pimples instead. Toothpaste, especially at the tip of the tube, can contain backteria from your toothbrush.

I heard that the toothpaste with baking soda in it can be used to clean silver - is that true? I can imagine trying it on jewelry, but I'm thinking of the heavier stuff, like tea sets.

I hate to break it to you, but truffle oil is just olive oil with a synthetic chemical (that is one of the constituents of truffles) added to it.

  • Two Dozen Uses For Toothpaste (Aside From Cleaning Your Teeth)   17 years 45 weeks ago

Hey great list! Will have to try some of these out!

One thing though. Using toothpaste on spots can be a bad idea. My brother swears by it but the one time i used it I woke up next morning with a huge red sore about 1/2 inch across, right by my nose where my spot had been. It was horrible, it lasted for weeks and I still have a scar from it.

So I would strongly advise against trying it for the first time the day before a big job interview/whatever!
