    I agree with Robin.
If I had a menu for the week already figured out, it might help, but how can I figure out what to have for dinner when I'm standing in the grocery store already full? No motivation!
But if you MUST bring your kids with you, then said kids tagging along should be full.
I think this could be number 6. Don't bring the kids because you'll spend more!
Also, if you have prices of commonly purchased items either memorized or written down, then you'll know a real deal when you see one and can stock up.

I just thought the picture was funny.

My drug of choice during my wayward youth was something rather more smokable. -Something that commonly induces the munchies whilst simultaneously lowering one's culinary standards, much as your list implies alcohol will do. A bag of Fudge-Striped Cookies is where it was at. Not healthy, and probably not frugal, but completely irresistible in certain chemically enhanced states. Don't get me started on hazy reminiscences of the little elves on the packaging...

Is it just my age showing, or do the kids in that picture look too young to legally partake in this country of ours?

  • Why Is "Rich" Often Equated With "Evil"?   17 years 45 weeks ago

From the accounts of my parents, grandparents, and friends in the generation of Chinese baby boomers that essay seems quite accurate. Only recently have people in China started to talk about this period in history openly. When I was young my mom told me what happened but she warned me not to talk about it because telling the stories could be seen as dissent behavior.   A lot of crazy stuff happened and a lot of lives were ruined. Many of these things can't even be imagined by Americans.

You're right. I did say that. Think it's possible kill yourself by drinking 20 bottles of ketchup?

OK, now you sound like part of a different administration... oh, that's right. I WENT THERE.

Mind you, my Russian grandmother used to make gołąbki using ketchup instead of spicy tomatoes. It could be that I'm still recovering from the trauma of that. What can I say? She was a lazier cook than I am.

  • "Stapler. Stapler." - FREE $20 Swingline Stapler   17 years 45 weeks ago

I completed the survey before the 4/4/08 deadline, but never received my stapler, nor any kind of response from the company.

    Did anybody receive their stapler?

[This needs a follow-up story, btw.]

It's drunk food. I say bring it on! And anyone who knows me knows I'm no Reaganite. But to be fair, less than a third asked for ketchup directly. I think two stated it, with one using it as a replacement for another ingredient. So there.

That list makes me NEED to drink, Paul. You use ketchup like you're a part of the Reagan administration or something!

I'm with you on the wine, Barbara! It's not bad meal-replacement, either.

    I kid, I kid. Or DO I?

Every store I've been to that sells wine has offered the standard 10% discount if I bought 12 bottles, even if it was mix and match! My local Kroger also offers 5% on 6 bottles. I love a glass (ok, more) almost every night, so it's one of the few things I'll stock up on at the store because in the long run, it's definitely cheaper than buying one a day.

/did I just say one whole bottle? umm, maybe I meant one every two days... ;-)

Xin Lu, I would appreciate your opinion on this article about China and how it fared under Communism. Is it acurate, do you think?

I think I must be the only person who expereinces this (because I always see the eat before you shop advice) but if I grocery shop when I am full, I end up buying less than we need, because none of the food seems very appealing. So, my grocery bill would be much lower, but I would end up eating out or buying more groceries at the corner store (more expensive) later in the week.

Shopping when I'm starving often causes me to buy cookies ^_^ but otherwise doesn't affect my budget, except for the under-buying phenomenon. Maybe I'm the only one?

Thanks for the update.  I think this offer became very popular right around the time I posted it (coincidence, probably...)  I love our wubbanub (or rather my son does) so if you can get one on sale somewhere, it is a good investment!

  • How Do You Deal With Family Members Who Are Bad At Managing Money?   17 years 45 weeks ago

My two stepkids are both drunks, druggies, and constantly wanting money, for their addictions and lawyers to save them. (Just like their mother) Their father loves to rescue them, the more expensively the better. I find myself at the store sometimes just buying stuff in an insane way.

I'll have to stop, I'm into the self-pity here. Doing something for someone else is the only way I've found to help with this. I'll go volunteer at the animal shelter, and other places, for a few nights each week. I'll be out of the stores.

Being used, by your family or friends, is a problem too. I wonder if there is really love there, in teaching another that they don't have to be responsible for (at least) themselves.

I love making the first sauce! I add a little extra brown sugar and it comes out great. I serve it over rice noodles. I might have to try the other two at some point.

if you're really into going natural look into no-poo (washing your hair with baking soda and then rinsing with vinegar or other methods). the baking soda didn't really work with me (i wasn't comfortable going through the detox period of super greasy hair), but if you're dedicated you can do it and save SO much money. i still use vinegar instead of conditioner. http://community.livejournal.com/no_poo/

............still comes down to the jealousy people harbor towards those who have more

That's the answer, people just cannot stand when someone have more than them, especially when the person is in the same age bracket as you

  • How Do You Deal With Family Members Who Are Bad At Managing Money?   17 years 45 weeks ago

erm.. noone is saying that you are bad at math or have an addiction, but that could be someone else's problem. Having no money for retirement could be a problem if you are near retirement, but if you're 20 years away you still have time to save.

However, if you do have an addiction and squander your money and you totally deny it then you may be that family member everyone is trying to get through to.

  • Why Is "Rich" Often Equated With "Evil"?   17 years 45 weeks ago

    Hi wildgift,
I wasn't referring to yours or others' relating their experiences, but to comments like...

"Behind every great fortune there lies a great crime. It's impossible to get rich by being ethical."

    and

"The wealthy have all invariably not earned their money. In other words they have stolen it from others."

    cheers,

    Go organic: YES!

Some years ago I developed a sort of allergy to chemical hair products, it was quite bad, my scalp was irritated and itchy, the dermatologists didn't have a clue and could only tell me to use specific shampoos which did as bad.
It was by chance that I discovered organic products and not only I recovered but my hair is always great, healthy and shiny. It used to get oily but now it stays clean for days and my natural color is amazing.
I only use shampoo and conditioner and have my hair cut by a good professional every 2 months, nothing else.

Plus, I stopped using a hairdryer and it helps.

By the way, I gradually switched to organic brands in all fields and it's really great for the skin. I use aleppo soap, face creams by Weleda and such, and mineral make-up, which is an incredible invention.

Agree with The Happy Rock - if you make a list and stick to it strictly, you might find yourself spending more than if you allowed yourself to buy similar ingredients that are cheaper.
