Thanks for reading and sharing your comment, Mary. I'm glad these tips are helpful to you! Some plumbers are nice enough to walk you through small projects over the phone or answer basic questions, such as "how do I turn off my main water source?" It's just a matter of finding a plumber willing to do this. Good luck!
DIY plumbing repairs are the most nerve wracking home repairs for me because I am afraid of flooding something or royally screwing it up but calling a plumber is often a pain and can get costly. Thank you for sharing these tips.
It is a shame that so many scams exist these days that I feel like I am losing a lot of trust in society as a whole. I've heard of the friendly girl scam and I have seen the "out of gas" scam. I have also seen plenty of people begging for money with their children. But as far as the white van goes, why would anybody even acknowledge somebody trying to sell them something from a white van? Vans already have the stigma of rape and if anybody has ever seen a crime show, they should be fully aware of how sketchy vans can be.
This post reminds me of my college graduation speech given by one of the distinguished alums. He began his speech in front of an entire graduating class by stating the average student debt per student. I was blown away. Is that really appropriate to say in a college graduation speech? We were all sitting before him aware of how much we owed and not looking forward to having to start repaying it.
Great article. Here is another niche scholarship: our local community college (Community College of Allegheny County) has a full scholarship for students who also serve as volunteer firefighters.
Years ago, I made a quilted star ornament from my grandfather's ties when he passed away. I can not find the pattern from about 10 years ago. Does any one know how I can find it online?
Nobody ever mentioned El Paso, Texas! It is a safe place in which there has not been a disaster my whole life, 25 year. Yes, we had a flood in 2006, but not the kind that is nature's fault. It was the city's fault for not being prepared for a good rainy day. The streets were not prepared with proper drainage, which is why it flooded. If you know about rain, you would have enjoyed that day, if the streets were ready.
By not having too many of them! :) We prefer to have a few people over at a time, anyway, and they usually reciprocate so we get free dinner too down the road. Plus they always offer to bring something! For our July birthdays our tradition is to have a dessert party where we serve fruit, cream puffs, and then splurge on several pints of Ben and Jerry's ice cream (on sale, bought ahead). It is always a hit and much cheaper than a whole meal!
I was a stay at home mother with six children. It helped with my sanity to feel like I was a accomplishing something outside of my children. The balance was great.
I live a simple life. However, minimalists who claim to own next to nothing and travel the world, do so at the largess of other people. I consider them users. They use sofas of other people to sleep on; they use other people's bathrooms and laundry rooms. They use other people to help propel them from point A to point B, i.e., hitchhiking across country and sleeping on sofas of friends, relatives and acquaintances. Users, plain and simple. I may have a few more things, but my main purchases are foods and medicines, not stuff. I live a simple life and I do it on my own.
This is "frugal"? Seeing a movie, ordering take-out, buying "something small", getting a mani/pedi? Sorry, but none of those are within *my* budget. I don't own a DVR, nor even a TV set; same problem.
Great advice. Lifestyle inflation can eat up 100% (or more!) of your income. This is similar to the tips I gave new grads about avoiding lifestyle inflation.
I don't know that Jay Leno is living on a small budget. The man owns HUNDREDS of cars. If he is saving a bunch, I'll give him credit for that, but he definitely spends plenty as well.
We live simply. Our lifestyle is sustainable as we buy very little other than food. I don't care for the "minimalist" who wanders the world and uses other people to support their lifestyle. Crashing on a friend or acquaintance's couch and using the bath/laundry/cooking facilities is not living on your own. It is merely using other people and I have never liked users. Live however you wish but please do not ask me for bed and board when you're in the area.
My wife uses mason jars for a variety of things – as a mug to take to work, to hold flowers in, or to store some coffee cold brew! There are so many uses for mason jars, it kind of boggles the mind.
I just discovered Airbnb and what a wonderful app! Not only for those looking for a cozy place to stay, but for those home-based businesses that are looking for a way to advertise their place! Niche resources like this will become ever more popular.
My wife wants to remodel the kitchen, and I agree, when you resell a home the kitchen is what a lot of people truly care about. Truly, it has the most opportunity to impress. Thanks for the article!

I watch for sales on items we normally need. That and we often attend or host potluck parties.

Pot luck!
I make it a potluck! It reduces the burden of feeding a large group of people, keeps it low-key, and you get a fun variety of dishes.

Easy. I don't have them. I save a bunch that way.
I'd go to other people's summer parties, but they are busy saving by not having them either.
Imagine how much money we're accumulating.

Pay yourself first is my favorite. If there is one thing you should do, it's this. But it's all great advice.
Where do I buy this from?
I am sure they still live pretty comfortably.
Also, unless they give generously to charities, they're just hording their money instead.

this is a great list and I hope to use many of these ideas. thanks!
Very useful advice Thursday, It's important to have a best first impression because we can not get it in the second time.
