There are a lot of ways when someone gets exposed to personal finance or anything money-related. There are also other factors that influenced us on how to deal with our money. Of course I first learned about it at home and then it started from there. No matter where it came from, I am always grateful because it brought me to where I am now.

Yes. I love growing my own food. I love being able to go in the backyard and get a fresh tomato without having to make a trip to the grocery store. This year we are growing about 10 different spices, 5 varieties of tomatoes, 5 varieties of peppers, sweet potatoes, eggplant, okra, snow peas, green beans, zucchini, cucumbers, black eyed peas, and green onions. Tomatoes have always done well for me, and cucumbers usually do too. This will be my first time growing green beans, black eyed peas, or snow peas. Tried okra last year and it didn't produce anything, but giving it another try this year! I think my favorite spice to grow is basil, because I love it so much!
Does doing make financial sense? (For the small-time gardener who also has a full time job, I mean. Plenty of people, now and in the past, have had their gardens as a primary or sole source of fruits and vegetables. If you are interested in a suburban version of this, check out the website: http://www.onehundreddollarsamonth.com/)
My conclusion about gardening is that it is worth it if:
1. You enjoy it, and therefore are not counting your labor as an expense.
2. You are at least on a five-year plan. There is a lot of trial and error that you only benefit from if you apply what you learned to the next year.
3. You can taste the difference between home-grown and store-bought, or you value knowing exactly what has and hasn't gone into the production of your food.
If you are just doing it to be cheap, I'd skip it.
One big Con with Ally that isn't mentioned -- Ally doesn't support "pull" download for Quicken (i.e., request from within Quicken to the bank for transactions). To get your transactions you have to log on to the Ally site and select to download ("push"). When EVERY other financial organization I have allows pull downloads, this is beyond ridiculous. I opened an Ally account and closed it within the month when I found this out.
I don't know. When dealing with friends and family I use one extreme or another.
For a really large amount of money, I get a note with clear payment terms and a schedule and collateral if possible. I'll even set a slightly better than market interest rate. This can be good if for example you need to get ahead of another creditor on the collateral and it reduces the opportunity for any misunderstanding. I won't do something like this unless it is really important to the friend/family member.
For more modest sums, anything I can afford to lose easily, I just tell them "here, I want to help, take it". If they insist it's a loan - usually for their own pride and self respect so I'm not going to fight that - I respond "OK, pay me back when you can" and then I forget about it. Completely and utterly.
I think people hesitate to "get it in writing" because they feel it is insulting...telling the other party they won't take their word. Here's how I like to defuse that (and think of it).
The purpose of the contract is to make sure we are communicating clearly and there's no confusion later on. It's a tool for the two of us to use to make sure that whatever happens is fair and what we agreed to. In a complex project/agreement there's plenty of room for miscommunication and if one or both of us is busy, recollections can be imprecise.
The idea that it might be used in court is completely secondary and of course unimportant between us two honest parties :-)
For those pesky small ants one of the best ways to get rid of them in your lawn is with instant grits, just sprinkle it around the ant hills and in about a week the ants are gone.
Thanks for the history lesson. I guess it should come as no surprise that Washington has been subsidizing an incompetent bank competing with competent ones that required no bailout. No Ally for me....
I love to buy small items, for myself and friends/family, that are both useful and unique to the areas I've been. I love to decorate, so finding something I genuinely like enough to buy anyway is fun b/c when I see it around the house it reminds me of the trips I have taken. Vases, a dish towel from Finland that hangs on my kitchen wall as art, a leather wallet for a friend from Florence, etc. I love to shop but it has to be something I will actually use or that my friends will actually like! Thankfully I am pretty good at gift giving so usually my choices go over well. So far, so good! :)
Yes, we do... but that said we are celebrating our first spring living in Albuquerque, where all the rules change in terms of gardening! We have a fabulous CSA for backup, but I am trying to grow berries, melons, and lots of types of veggies. We even planted a peach tree in our backyard! :) I imagine this year will be a lot of trial and error as I figure out what I can grow in our yard here, but I'm excited for the challenge!
I found a pair of UGG Boot!!! Perfect shape! It's crazy what people throw out. I go to the college but live off campus. I always feel so weird doing it but it's like why throw out stuff people can use, they could have donated it.
The Nigerian scammers posing as the FBI threatening to charge you with supporting terrorism ARE the terrorists. There is a special place reserved in Hell just for them.

We grow a garden! All sorts of vegetables in a 15 x 15 plot. It definitely beats farmer market prices and a fun hobby.
My vote is Phoenix AZ. It may be hot however natural disastures are at a minimum.
We grow tomatoes, greens, peas, sweet peppers, and potatoes.

I have certainly do! Currently growing radishes, broccolini, sugar snap peas, kale, lettuce, cucumbers, peppers, and tomatoes!
I want to start. Haven't yet.
I found this help full. Lysin helps get rid of it and arginine feeds it. They also list natural food for both.

Yes, we grow some of our own food.

Here's the end of a recent blog post of mine about this question:

Hope that's food for thought :)
I wish I could grow my own food but between severe allergies and clay in the yard of my rental house it is not an option.
What do you mean by "you dont have to worry about atm fees"?

They also have a good HSA account, again, if you don't mind having your HSA money in cash instead of investments.

Deodorant? Just saying!

What is the ratio of Dawn to water for spraying on kitchen counters to get rid of ants?
I have a huge garden and grow everything from potatoes and tomatoes to okra and soybeans.
