Music Monday: Van Day

Happy Music Monday! Say, where would we be without vans? Vans are very talented at making music, you know. Today Scott's gathered five famous Vans in honor of Van Morrison's birthday. We'll run into him at the end. But first...

Townes Van Zandt - If I Needed You

You probably noticed my love of Townes Van Zandt last week. Normally I try not to do the same artist back to back, but this time I made a little exception. He's just so good at being sad, isn't he? Don't worry, Vans aren't always melancholy. It's gonna get happier after the jump.

Four more Vans comin' up inside! Join us, why don't you.

Van Halen - Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love

The Debunker: Are Sunspots Dark?

Take a break from your fun in the August sun to ask yourself: what do I really know about this giant glowing globe of plasma shining down on my picnic/game of Ultimate Frisbee/clothing-optional beach right now? Given that the Sun is what makes life on Earth possible, it's appalling how much misinformation we've been fed about our nearest star. Speaking of our nearest stars: Ken Jennings, that one guy from Jeopardy!, may not be as bright as the Sun, but he's an expert on debunking myths and misconceptions. All month, he'll be lighting up our stellar misconceptions regarding the sun.

Oh, This Thing

Hey, you might not have heard of this thing. It's pretty obscure.

So there's this company, you know. They're called Apple. They don't really keep a high profile or anything so it's super easy to miss them. Kinda under the radar, you know? But they do have this cool tablet thing. I forget what it's called, nobody really talks about them much. It's just one of those little companies you run into sometimes.

Like once, I was on vacation, right? And I went on a hike and I found this tiny little store that made soaps and jellies. And I bought, like, ten of each, and they were the best soaps and the best jellies and then, next year, I wasn't sure if they'd still be there because they were so remote! But they were! And I was so happy, because I knew a little place off the beaten path that nobody had ever heard of.

Only What You Need

The dark secret of computers? We don't need as much computer as we have.

Let's discount a few people here. Not to be mean, but in an attempt to demonstrate just how little computer a human being needs. First, we'll take out hardcore programmers. Obviously they're building the future, they need to be on the bleeding edge. Then we'll take out professional gamers. In their world, a tenth of a second lag could end a career, but if all you play is a balloon popping game? Eh, it's not so serious, is it? And finally, let's take out all the people who are trying to calculate the last digit of Pi. Good luck at that incidentally. So who's left?

Music Monday: Dedicated To The Woot Writers

Happy Music Monday! One of the best parts of this job? The people one gets to work with. Today's mix is a tribute to Scott's co-workers, the Woot Writing Team. Please enjoy! OR ELSE.

Townes Van Zandt - Kathleen

Kathleen is our newest writer, and she's so much fun. One day, after we all die, it'll be her job to carry on in our name. Carry that torch, Kathleen! We believe in you!

We're got more writer-based music coming up, right after the jump!

David Bowie - John I'm Only Dancing

John is an actor, a musician, and a writer. He's also full of joy and energy, much like this song. And he's the voice of Time Truck! We're lucky to have him.

Reebok Men's Athletic Shorts 3-Pk or 6-Pk

Shortage

We all need shorts. Yes, all of us. EVEN YOU, READER.

Are you working out in a pair of jeans? Almost certainly no. Are you lounging on the porch during a hot summer's afternoon in a suit and tie? Well, maybe. But most probably no. Are you dressed like a matador to go out and walk the dog at five in the morning? There's certainly a chance... but no. In all those situations, what you're ACTUALLY doing is pulling on a pair of shorts and heading to do your thing.

Shorts aren't fashion. Shorts aren't for models on a runway. What shorts ARE for are all those moments when you just can't bring yourself to care about what you've got on. Shorts are function, plain and simple. And that's why you need some plain and simple shorts.

TO WIT: THESE.

Forum Changes: Why You (Probably Won't) Care

Notice anything different about us? Eh? Eh? No? You never notice when we make adjustments to the site. It's like you don't care!

All jocularity aside, the forums have undergone a change. Woot Plus Sales (the ones with lots of products that last more than one day) will now have a discussion thread for each product, rather than the entire sale.

The Good: Now you can ask questions about specific products (i.e. "Does this monitor support rainbows?") and all discussion will happen in one place.

The Bad: Sometimes it makes sense to talk about an entire sale, and now that's unpossible.

The Ugly: This page is now pretty dang crowded with threads. If you're looking for a specific discussion for a specific product, we strongly recommend getting there via the product detail page instead of wading through all those threads.

Dyson DC41 Animal - 3 Styles

Belle Of The Ball

All this DC41 wanted was to go to a dance. But oh, those wicked stepsisters!

The DC41 looked out at the tiny mice made of dust, also known as her only friends. They leaned quietly against the wall. From the other room, the DC41 heard laughter. Her stepsisters were preparing to go and see the Prince!

Rocking back and forth on her pivoting core technology, the DC41 sighed. If only I could go to the dance! she thought. If only I could meet the prince! Oh, why can't I have any friends of my own?

"DC41?" called Meanella from the top of the stairs. "Have you cleared all the sand off the beach behind our seafront mansion?"

"Not yet, Meanella." DC41 called back. Meanella giggled.

"Oh, what a shame! If only you had finished, we would have let you join us! But now, you simply must stay here and finish."
