The goal of the FIRE movement is to obtain financial independence through smarter spending, saving and investing more money than is typically recommended. The eventual goal of FIRE practitioners is to retire early — hence the acronym FIRE, which stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. According to FIRE enthusiasts, it’s “complete freedom to be the best, most powerful, energetic, happiest and most generous version of you that you can possibly be.”
In 1922, United Services Automobile Services (USAA) was born when 25 members of the U.S. Army formed a small organization to insure each other’s automobiles. What began as a well-orchestrated effort to help fellow Army members later became a booming organization serving all branches of military service.
Amica Mutual Insurance has been in business for more than a century. The company is known for its exceptional customer service and satisfaction, and Amica has received recognition and rewards in numerous categories for multiple branches of its operation.
Despite its reputation and recognitions, none of these acclaims are for Amica’s renter’s insurance branch. While some awards, such as the PBN Best Place to Work award of 2018, might apply to the whole company across the board, others such as their 2019 ranking as number 1 in “Highest in customer satisfaction with the property insurance claim experience” are particular to a division of the company.

Driving with caution and planning for potential hazards ahead does more than just help you stay safe – it can help fuel be used more efficiently as well. Fuel efficiency describes an engine’s rate of obtaining and using energy from fuel. This is an important process to understand as efficient driving techniques can help extend the life of a car’s gas tank, save money on gas and reduce the vehicle’s impact on the environment. Our guide to fuel efficiency breaks down what drivers need to know about this energy-saving method of driving in all conditions (no matter how dangerous the state roads might be), and how to calculate the most efficient speed for their car.
One of the more interesting differences of opinion amongst personal finance books and websites is whether or not it makes sense to focus on making a few big changes or a lot of small changes.
Let’s say you make 10 small changes to your life that each save you $1 a day. Over the course of a month, that’s $300 — $1 times 10 things times 30 days in a month.
On the other hand, let’s say you make 3 big changes to your life that each save you $100 a month. Over the course of a month, that’s also $300 — $100 times 3.
Obviously, both approaches are going to save money, but which one is the better approach?
Some will argue for the smaller number of big changes. You’re far better off making a few really high impact changes, goes that argument and this enables you to live your day to day life. The argument here is that it’s not the $5 coffee that’s damaging you, but the $100 cable bill.
Good2Go strives for simplicity when it comes to car insurance. For over 25 years, the company has been an excellent option to consider if you need liability-only insurance quickly with affordable rates. Good2Go also offers comprehensive and collision policies for those who need more than liability insurance but still want a no-frills option. It’s particularly attractive to people who have a driving history that makes it hard to find affordable insurance.
Ridesharing services have made getting across town as easy as the push of a button. They can be more convenient than public transportation because drivers come directly to you, and ridesharing can be a less expensive option than traditional taxis as long as you don’t go when surge pricing exists.
That said, privacy is becoming more of a talking point and rightly so. How do ridesharing apps use your information? And are there other industries like auto insurance that might use the same technology to learn more about you?
If you’ve had a package stolen when you ordered from Amazon or another online retailer, you’re not alone. An increase in online shoppinga 2018 poll by Marist College and National Public Radio (NPR), over 75% of Americans say that they shop online, and 25% admit that they do so at least once a month. Another 18% of the population shops online even more frequently.

During a no-spend challenge, you try not to spend money on anything extra for a certain period of time. You can choose to cut nonessential and nonrecurring expenses altogether, or select a few categories that you want to cut back on — like clothing, coffee, or dining out.
Over the many years I’ve written for The Simple Dollar, I have tried a ton of different frugality tactics, and I’ve written about a lot of them. Often, I’ll hear about or read about an idea, wonder if it actually works well and saves money, and then try it myself to find out. If there’s something interesting enough to make a full article about it, I’ll write about it — sometimes there is and sometimes there isn’t.
The thing is, I’ll often try tactics and then end up discarding them after a while because some problem or another pops up, something that I didn’t initially notice. I’ll just shrug my shoulders and go back to my old way of doing things.
It’s not hard to see that cars are getting smarter as automakers compete to entice car buyers, but with the improvement of technology has come a big, modern day problem: car hacking. It’s reported that by 2022, 125 million cars will be connected to the internet. That forecast comes with new, sneakier ways to hack into vehicle systems, ultimately taking control remotely.
More than ever, car owners need to be proactive about their car’s cybersecurity. In this piece, we dive into how cars are being compromised and how you can avoid being hacked.

Smart devices are increasingly important in our everyday lives and are found in the workplace, in our homes and everywhere in between. In fact,34.8 million homes in the United States are considered “smart homes” in 2019 and this is projected to continue growing.
Home insurance companiesand utility companies have taken notice of increased smart device usage. Benefits of using these devices include increased safety and decreased energy usage, so many home insurance companies are beginning to offer special discounts, rebates and deals for homeowners who use smart devices.

1. Martin Luther King Jr. on doing the right thing
“Never, never be afraid to do what’s right, especially if the well-being of a person or animal is at stake. Society’s punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way.” — Martin Luther King Jr.
Doing the right thing is often not the easy thing. It is easier to walk away. It is easier to think no one’s being harmed. It is easier to simply do nothing.
Over 32 percent of Colorado residents—roughly 500,000 people—rent their homes, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau. If you’re one of those people, consider purchasing renters insurance to protect your personal belongings from fire, theft or extreme weather events.
Last week, I wrote about our experiences over the last year after canceling our cable service. We’ve essentially moved on to a small rotating selection of streaming video services which, along with our antenna, meets our video needs.
One element of that article that seemed to intrigue a few readers is our family’s use of YouTube. I mentioned that there are several YouTube channels that we watch and sometimes even binge-watch. A few of them are probably familiar to longtime Simple Dollar readers, in fact.
A budget is a great tool. But like all great tools, it's possible to do without it. To do that, you go beyond budgeting …
A little over two years ago, we took Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University at our church.
In taking the course, our lack of budgeting convicted us. Since then, we've drafted a budget every month, using a very low-tech but very effective pen-and-paper budgeting system.
The purpose of budgeting is to give every dollar some purpose, whether it's essential spending like housing and food, discretionary spending like streaming services or eating out, or saving, investing, and giving.
