You could get away with giving Mom painted flowerpots or glittery picture frames for Mother's Day when you were seven, but it's time to up your game. Mom deserves a thoughtful gift. 1. A statement necklace

Have you been ignoring DIY jewelry? I have, because I'm lousy with intricate handcrafts. I had ruled that out until seeing this gorgeous DIY statement necklace. And the possibilities for other styles are endless. I like the fact that even little hands could make one of these.

2. Indoor herb garden

Is your mom a fan of Mason jars? They're homey, inexpensive, practical, and can be used for pretty much anything. They also make a really great base for an indoor herb garden. If you don't have time to start herbs from seed, just transplant seedlings into the jars with soil, label them with cute stickers, and present to Mom on Mother's Day.

3. Decadent body scrubs

I'm obsessed with coconut scrub right now, but there are many scent options for making your own sugar scrubs: Coffee, raspberry, lavender, peppermint — you get the idea. They all smell amazing, are easy to make, and exfoliate the skin, leaving it healthy and glowing. Here's how to make some for Mom.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup of sugar
  • ½ cup of coconut oil
  • 1 cup coffee grounds or few drops of essential oils, depending on chosen scent
  • 1 empty jar

Method

Mix well. Store in a tub or jar that seals tightly. Pop a pretty label onto the jar, and you're good to go.

4. Outdoor throw pillows

Boy, do I love me some throw pillows. However, they're a little pricey (around $20 a pillow) to buy. Why not make some yourself? Head to your local fabric store and check the "outdoor fabric" section. Don't forget to check the remnant bin, where you might find the perfect small piece. And for these DIY outdoor pillows, you don't even need a sewing machine!

5. Makeup brush holder

I'm hoping my daughter sees this post so that she'll make me this DIY makeup brush holder. My makeup brushes are currently without a proper home and regularly fall into the sink, which isn't great. Without a place to put your makeup brushes, they get dirtier, faster, and your makeup drawer is often in a state of chaos. Don't let Mom live like that! The sewing time for this brush holder is about one hour. It's a bonus if you can find fabric that matches her bathroom colors.
