Ask the Readers: Do You Still Shop at the Local Mall?

Editor's Note: Congratulations to Tina in NJ, Donna, and Linda for winning this week's contest!

Shopping malls used to be most everyone's one-drive retail stop; you can spend a whole afternoon shopping at a dozen stores, and you only need to park once. But with the popularity of online shopping and other changes in the way we shop — buying second-hand, cutting back on purchases, opting for homemade or DIY goods — your local mall may not be the bustling retail center it used to be.

Do you still shop at the local mall? If not, where do you do your shopping now? What do you usually buy when you do go to a shopping mall?

Tell us whether you shop at the local mall and we'll enter you in a drawing to win a $20 Amazon Gift Card!

I don't really shop at the mall that much now - usually online or at the specific store I want to go to. malls are depressing!

I usually shop there around Christmas and then about once a year with birthday money, but I'm not a big mall person.

Very rarely do I still shop at the mall. I prefer to research what I'm looking for online and often find better deals after comparing stores than if I were to just go to the mall and make impulse purchases.

I go the mall occasionally, usually when my tween daughter has money burning a hole in her pocket. For myself, I usually go to Kohl's or Target. Sometimes Sears.

I have noticed that i don't go as often as when i was younger, but if it is clothing or shoes i will make an exception then from buying online. Also, if i have an awesome coupon and there are some great holiday deals i will check out the mall because its really nice to try the items you buy on. That way you don't have to worry about sending it back if it doesn't fit just right!

I do most of my shopping online these days except for big ticket items like cars, appliances and jewelry but even then I do my internet research first. I only hit the "mall" if I have time to spare (not often) and am looking for one specific item. My shopping trip is usually under 1/2 hour and I'm in and out with what I came to get. No impulse shopping for this guy. The dollar just doesn't go as far as it used to so now-a-days it's not a sin to be frugal. My favorite places to visit in person are thrift stores and outlet malls.

I still shop at my local mall and I love it! It's a great place to catch up with friends, a great afternoon/night out with family, and for me, it's a place I like to go unwind sometimes aka retail therapy. My main reason for shopping in a mall is so I can physically try on clothing/shoes before purchasing and I prefer to touch and feel the product that I'm looking to buy. If I need something, I like to be able to buy it and have it in my hands right then and there - online shopping is great, but you have to wait 5-7 business days to receive your item (sometimes longer) and 9 times out of 10 there are shipping fees. I'll always enjoy shopping in a mall and will continue to do so!

Local Mall?

I live in a rural area, so the local mall. about 20 miles from me, doesn't have anything more than Walmart( which I hate) a Gametop, Menard's and a Dollar store. Very slim picking. Need to go about 75 miles to find a 'real' mall. Few and far between trips, so I usually do online internet shopping and ordering.

With the price of gas, 75+ miles to shop for 'stuff' is not a good deal. Day trips are something more interesting and inspiring.

I still buy clothes at the mall. I know I can purchase a lot of the items online, but I still prefer to try them on to see how they fit. I guess I'm a bit "old-fashioned"!

The mall near me is in shambles. The better stores are Boston Store, American Eagle, VS, and Bath and Body Works. I usually do returns at the VS, but I buy online mostly. This weekend was the first time I was at my mall in over two months. It's sad how much online shopping can affect a mall with the same stores!

I rarely shop the mall. I shop consignment, target, or online for best prices.

I shop at my local mall usually to buy gifts for the holidays for family & friends.

Guest's picture

Yes, i do--but i'm in and out! Usually just to The Limited for work clothes, or Victorias Secret for the $7/25 sale. :) Instead I shop online, at outlet stores, or at discount stores like TJ Maxx.

Guest's picture

Nope, the mall doesn't sell used items. And that's practically all I buy besides food.

Very rarely do I shop at malls anymore. When I do it tends to be around the holidays buying gifts for others. But I usually shop online at places like Amazon or at stores like Target, Walmart, and specialty shops.

I do! Although online shopping is convenient, sometimes it's nice to be able to try things on before purchasing.

Donna Freedman's picture

I rarely shop at all, because I'm pretty low-maintenance. The mall closest to me has a postal station that rarely has lines, so I like to use that rather than the post office. It has a Hallmark store so I sometimes buy special-occasion cards there. I also get my hair cut at the Regis in that mall.

I very rarely go to a mall, especially since I live in the city. I do most of my shopping online - it's so convenient and easier to shop around for the best price!

I haven't been to the mall in years. I prefer shopping online to find the best bargains, save time, and have what I want delivered right to my door without fighting the crowds.

Nope! Just online.

I rarely shop at the mall. Mostly Walmart, online, or if I do go to the mall it's to shop at Target (one of the anchor stores). I find shopping at the mall exhausting. It just keeps getting bigger & bigger!!

I live and work right by the biggest and most popular mall in my city, but I don't reeeeally go shopping there since it's expensive. I've occasionally walked over on my lunch hour to pick up a specific item from, like, Sephora where the price is the same as it would be online. I actually drive a good half-hour to a DIFFERENT mall when I want to go clothes shopping because the other mall has a Dillard's outlet where everything is at a ridiculously reduced price. I get other household items from Target.

I usually buy on line, but I will still go to the mall for clothes usually. Hard for me to buy something without trying it on first. I also like to feel the fabrics and check the quality before I buy.

Yes, I do shop at the local mall. I usually go to the mall once a month and search for stores that have sales or stores that I have a coupon for. I usually get clothes, shoes, accessories, or bags.

I do for some things~ our Apple store is in the mall, and also Gap. I also shop at Macys, Target, Bed Bath & Beyond & Bath &Body Works. These are all in our local mall. I do buy many things on Amazon (love that Amazon Prime!) but some things are not available there.

There are two stores that I shop at our local mall. Only with coupons. The rest of the stores are either overpriced/low quality or they are not for people over the age of 20.

I don't buy stuff at malls anymore, as it's expensive for me and I prefer to buy used when possible. I do like to go walking around the mall sometimes, just for fun. I shop online or at thrift stores.

I do occasionally shop at the mall. Usually it is because I like to hit up the clearance rack at certain store like JCPenneys. I would say that I go about once a month. I will say that I noticed that it is never busy like it used to be 10 years ago.

I do still shop at the mall, but a lot less often than I used to. And when I go, I have a stack of coupons or offers to redeem, as well. I do love to spend the day shopping and only have to park once, especially on rainy Pacific Northwest days.

No, I hate it!!! No fresh air, lots of perfume, and artificial light, high prices. I shop at thrift stores and single stores like Marshall's or occasionally Target when I need something. :)

I still shop at the local mall, just not nearly as often as I used to. These days, I buy underwear (because the cheap stuff doesn't fit right) and replacements for items that are so old they are disintegrating. Of course, I wait for sales and use coupons.

No malls for us. Most of our clothing comes from thrift stores. Household items come from places like home goods, target, TJ Maxx, etc. The only type of mall we go to is outlet malls and that's if we are buying gifts for other people.

Yes, I do shop at our one and only mall. Sometimes for no other reason than to get in a good walk in inclement weather. About 50% of the stores are closed. If it weren't for 3 anchor stores, JCPenney (much worse than in the past), KMart (Not much) and Beall's (best of the three, but expensive). There are 2 shoe stores and a Burke's variety discount along with 2 Chinese , 1 Mexican, 1 Italian (of sorts), 1American (of sorts) food joints. Not to forget Zales, which I do not frequent at all, a hair dresser, "get buff" supplement store, and and 2 cheap trinket stores. Vow, how exciting!

I rarely shop at the mall. I don't like having to drive out there, park, deal with the crowds, and then take more time and energy browsing for want I want. I buy most of my clothes and shoes online from brands in which I know my sizing or have the option to return for free in a store or ship back for free. The selection online is bigger (especially for someone petite like myself) and the prices are often better. I also get more rewards from my credit card for buying things via certain retail sites. But I do like browsing at outlets and Target.
