My advice would be to travel before you get a job. Once you get a job, you won't have time and time moves so fast!

My advice would be to try to pay off as much student loans as you can and be frugal and live like a college student even after getting a job.

Be careful of lifestlye inflation. Wait on any changes until you get your first few pay checks. It's never as much as you think it should be!

The biggest challenge for (many but not all) graduates is realism. Get a job, do it well and reap the rewards of that experience. I cringe every time I hear someone advice recent grads to "follow their dreams" or "don't compromise". I think that advice does a real disservice to young people. You can always work and strive for something different or "better" but don't wait around for your perfect job.

  • Why I Still Write Paper Checks   9 years 47 weeks ago

Yes, I still use checks and prefer to do so. Between our business and personal accounts, we have 5 checking accounts and write checks from all of them every month. It takes me less time to write out a check than it does to turn the computer on, log in to the site with a user name and password, navigate to the account section/bill pay, enter the amount and print the payment. I prefer a printed receipt of payment if not writing a check and I don't do auto payments, as I do not like companies having my checking account or c.c info stored on their computer. All of the folks working for me want to be paid by paper check. I actually enjoy taking the time to sit and write out checks and review the accounts.

  • The 5 Best Hand Lotions   9 years 47 weeks ago

I'm very surprised that you wouldn't have listed CeraVe or Cetaphil even
I have always been under the impression that these are fabulous moisturizing lotions and they're very gentle. So does anyone maybe know why they wouldn't be listed here? Maybe I heard wrong?
    Just let me know thanks

If you are off to college, study and pass your classes. Not everyone will make the dean's list but you do want to graduate. If you are going off to work, start saving a bit of that paycheck from the very beginning.

  • How NOT TO Answer 10 of the Most Common Interview Questions   9 years 47 weeks ago

Let's be honest here. People judge you on the way you look. They also judge you on your age, even though they're not supposed to. I'm 60 yrs. old and need a job desperately. In every interview I've had, I've always answered the questions the way I'm supposed to -- and I NEVER get the job. A 20-something is always hired, doesn't know how to answer a phone and they sure don't know about customer service. They talk a mile a minute and you can't understand them. I hope I'm around in 20 or 30 years to see all of these H. R. people out of work and trying to get hired. The 20-somethings will be in their 40's or 50's. Only then will they know what it's like to try to get a job when they're older.

  • Ask the Readers: What Advice Would You Give a New Grad?   9 years 47 weeks ago

The advice I would give a new high school graduate is to go to a local community college and complete your basics there while saving a lot of money on tuition in the process. If you can, stay at home (but help out your parents with rent or other bills with a part time job). A lot times, many high school grads do not yet know what they want to do and that's totally fine. Getting your basics done at a community college is ideal and will allow you to transfer to a four year state school. Finally if you haven't already, start saving a little here and there. This is crucial.

  • Ask the Readers: What Advice Would You Give a New Grad?   9 years 47 weeks ago

I would tell new grads to keep their options open. They may not get their dream job offer right away. They might have to work their way thru a job to get the job that they really want. For high school grads I would tell them to try to get a side job to help pay for books/tuition.

A tip on home frothing milk. You need regular milk, 1%, low fat, etc. won't froth properly.
Pour some milk into a sealable container and shake vigorously for one minute.
Remove lid and microwave for 8-15 seconds depending on your microwave.

    Pour out and enjoy!

It helps to use a tall container to allow the milk to expand in the microwave. Just watch the milk rise as it's cooking and stop before it overflows.

  • How Big of a House Do You Really Need?   9 years 47 weeks ago

My family consists of two parents, a 12 year old, 11 year old and 2 year old... And working on another... We are working very hard to get ourselves into a 28 foot Tiny Home, with 32 foot upper loft level and have this on a goose-neck trailer (goose-neck to be a work from home office and roof-deck.) We live in one of the more expensive parts of the US and we have realized that we would rather say good-bye to tons of stuff that we don't use and more room than we need to have (2400sq ft,) I think we can get into less than 500.... I lived in India for almost 4 months and was given 7 hours notice that I needed to leave the US and get to Delhi India. I lived in a room about 12 by 12 - bathroom *sorta - don't ask, makeshift kitchen, one - ONE plug ONLY, laundry was done in the bathroom area where a hose hung down and I would get about 7-9 minutes of water that had no pressure and made me learn how to literally wash cloths/ shampoo-condition/ shave/and I have extreme anxiety over cleanliness... When I was able to leave and come back to the US, I found myself camped in an area of our family room where a recliner, a small table and plug sat. I even stopped using cups, only use a glass water bottle. I have slowly forced my family to get use to less of everything (cutlery has dropped from 12 forks to 6 etc...) It can be done. It takes 21-24 days to make a new "thing" a habit... So after being forced (and when I was not in my room, I was in a private closet sized NICU the rest of the time....) It can be done. I am now clearing out rooms in our house and prepping them for sale (painting, patching cleaning up etc.... My goal, pay no more than what we can (my partner/I) can earn in one bi-weekly paycheck, leaving 3 more for the month ... that just will go to savings. Our baby, I saved at-least $4000 by cloth diapering with a stash of 90 pads/21 shells (total $162 - eBay China.) We plan to invest in solar panels, incinerating toilet, rainwater collection and humidity gathering for water. AND just to make sure we can do it as a family of 5, (and I brought stuff to take up the space of two more-more kids and we all loved it, felt closer, my little girl is more excited to have a high loft small bed/room with built-ins than than we are.
I learned in India that life is short, possessions come and go, and for me I had a backpack, laptop, cell phone, water bottle and 3 outfits... I still have 46 pairs of footwear, *that I do NOT plan to let go of!

  • 17 Things Car Salesmen Don't Want You to Know   9 years 47 weeks ago

#7 about extended warranties being for suckers really angers me! I don't think you know what you are talking about regarding any of the points in this article and for those who read this and trust that you are telling the truth and that you are giving good advice you are being completely irresponsible.
I'm a senior manager in a dealership and have been for 25 years. I am specifically involved in the service and parts operations. Every single day we encounter customers who have purchased extended warranties/extended service contracts from companies outside of the dealership because they found out that, yes, they could buy it cheaper elsewhere. The reason I'm so certain that we encounter those customers every day is because they are upset and/or angry about their warranty company not covering repairs or short paying the repair. The ones I love are when the warranty company does approve the repair and sends us the parts........USED PARTS!!! That's when you'll see a customer hit the ceiling!
The facts are that the dealer extended service plans ARE more expensive but only because they cover so much more! Dealer extended warranties work seamlessly for the customer in that they are integrated with the dealer and the customer never has to get involved and make calls and complain to an outside company. The customer has a smooth service experience without the stress of multiple calls and that's all before it comes time to make payment. Many dealerships have been wronged so much by those outside warranty companies when it comes to payment that they no longer accept outside warranty companies payment terms. The dealers used to only collect the deductible for the covered repair and let the customer go about their day. The dealer would then wait for payment later. Then, their warranty companies would short pay the dealer or begin negotiating the price after the work had already been completed and if they did not pay by credit card they would take another 90 to 120 days to make payment. That doesn't include the amount of time the Service Advisors spend calling and sitting on hold forever while the warranty company rep's went through the estimates with a fine toothed comb! Advisors will tell you that calling outside warranty companies is among the worst things they do throughout their day!
Just to make it all clear I believe the author of this article has written a very inaccurate and irresponsible piece of trash here and he owes his readers an apology! I will issue the author a challenge - come to my dealership and let's watch for a day or two without anyone knowing who you are and let's see if you can support your claims!!!!
