Ooo, great idea, Olivia. I usually use my lemon peels for zest but will try holding some back to try this.
Now that is a real money-saver -- making jelly with the peels and cores! I think I remember my mom doing that! Summer is here so maybe it's time to make some jelly.
Twice this spring while passing through Fox Creek, Ab., I mentioned that this was the off season and the oil patch was dead so Iasked about a better price. I felt that 150 dollars plus tax was over my limit. The clerk also agreeded with me that most of the rooms that night would remain empty.
Needless to say, I was turned down. I was only two hours from Grande Prairie where I have a home so perhaps they did me a favour and I saved the price of a room.
Well, if you ask me, the most critical part of structuring your finances and optimizing savings is just having a plan. Whether you use a spreadsheet or a tool like Geltbox money or some other website -- you have to get everything out if front of you so you can make smarter decisions. Once you do that, then implementing your disciplined savings strategy becomes critical
I live in Sonoma- a town about 50 miles north of San Francisco. The public transit there is scarce. But I make it work. I have a car, and use it almost exclusively, but when I know I can get somewhere by bus, I jump on the opportunity. I love being able to relax and not think about anything for a little bit. It helps ease the day. I agree with the points in this article.
I wish I could find a job in moderation. I even took an online course in content moderation and thus far no luck. I have applied to the places you mention. Never heard back. I hear about these jobs but never actually find many on Indeed or other job boards. Many want community *managers* different than a moderator. Some ask for college degrees or 2-3 years experience. It's pretty dishearting as it would be perfect for me.
As we're anticipating a job related move soon, your article is mighty timely.
My sister in law highly recommended full replacement cost moving insurance. (She was in the moving insurance business.) It was well worth it. Our items were bundled with a couple other families and kept in a facility to coordinate destinations mid move. Someone put a dresser on top of our sofa and ripped a foot long gash in the upholstery. The insurance covered the reupolstery. Something she didn't suggest, but I would now, is to take pictures of your items before the guys pick it up. Their interpretation of "nicks, scratches and wear", may end up being mighty different before than after the move. The movers also damaged a chair, since it had "wear" they wouldn't acknowledge any damage, and we had to live with the results. A foot long gash however, they couldn't ignore.
We also compared national companies to a self move. By having them bid against each other it ended up cheaper going with the national company. We saved quite a bit of stress as well.
A couple things, more a matter of logistics. Label the packed boxes by their placement in the new home. It makes set up much easier when the moving guys do the grunt work. Also, if you have a choice, pack the bed last and set it up first.
I always try to buy all my gifts way ahead of time to get good deals, but for father's day, a lot of times I get my dad a bunch of brownie mixes, b/c he loves to make brownies.
I'm with you on the candied orange peels, but candied lemon peels are even better. You don't have to take the "bitterness" out. Thicker skins make a more toothsome candied peel.
You can cook up a lovely jelly with apple peels and cores. It's a great save when you're making sauce or a mess of apple pies. Boil the peels and cores in water and drain as you would for regular jelly, and follow the recipe on the pectin box. It's a bit cloudier than regular apple jelly and kind of pinkish but has a delicate floral sense to it.
A Depression era friend said her mom would make jelly from the sweetened juice left over from canned fruit. Treat is as if it were straight juice when following the recipe. Peach is especially good.
1.) Open a retirement savings account NOW.
2.) Get in the habit of saving or paying off school debt aggressively. Understand that every time you buy something, you are making a financial decision - spending money today means less money for something big in the future. Figure out what your financial priorities and goals are.
3.) Don't be afraid to do a volunteer year like AmeriCorps - it can provide you with invaluable experience both for your resume and for figuring out what careers you do or don't like.
Give these poor sales guys a break! Why doesn't anyone go bargain with electronic retailers, furniture outlets, phone manufacturers etc. which are all ridiculously over-priced???!!!
The Cromwell, really, overpriced for an old hotel with thin wall, up 70 buck per person to use the pool on weekends, 32 dollar drinks. and a 32 dollar a day resort fee that really includes nothing. I would say Vegas has the best marketing scheme ever, come blow lots of money pretending that you are richer then you are, and have nothing to return home with because it's not gambling it's entertainment, so expect to lose, in smoke chocking casinos, and over pay for bad drinks. Even if you go to a show, the prices are 2 to 3 x more then if you saw the person anywhere else.
The candied orange peel is such a great idea! I checked out several videos on YouTube and found one that I'm going to follow when I try this. The link in your article seems to spend an over abundance of time boiling because the pith is used. I think I'll opt for just the skin. I never thought you could make your own so I'm very excited about trying this!
I'd like to try the heal of the bread into croutons now that my kids are grown. I actually get a shot at the coveted heels now! When they were little I used to catch them cutting both ends off of the cooling bread! Thanks for the ideas.
Dollars store
My family will make me a home cooked meal with all my favorite foods and are nice to me all day. I don't care about presents.
I just always have a limit when giving gifts no matter what the holiday.
For souvenirs, try a local hardware store or grocery. I picked up wonderful French sponges, salt, mustard and candies. Fun and affordable!

Tx for commenting! :-) - Marla
Hi! It does take a lot of work, but boy, are they good. If you can find clear packaging bags and pretty ribbon, they are a really good gift.
My family steals the croutons right out of the pan. It's a wonder any of them make it to the salad. :-) Thanks for commenting! -Marla

Wonderful article. Thank you so much. Very smart and helpful.
I'm buying my dad a CD and calling him.

we have a barbecue at home and usually will make a cake instead of buying one.

A free ecard and a great meal at home
Ebates is another option if you order a lot of things online.

Boost nutritional drink, pricing it for my mother, 24 pack of the original, 8 oz containers is about 1.00 MORE at Sams
We take my Dad out to lunch, but have the cake at home (instead of the restaurant).
