Hairwork is no longer posting ads for human hair. They discontinued as of March 13th and the last of the ads will go down in the next few days.
Unfortunately, Locks of Love has to trash most of the donations they receive. Sadly, the amount of "unusable" donations they receive is just too much for the small amount of people handling the workload. So the bulk of the hair they get is tossed, with the exception of some ok product that is sold to wig makers who pay them cash. This money is used toward "organizational costs". And, their primary focus is not cancer patients. It is hair loss due to alopecia. Some of the funds they receive for the hair they sell does go to charitable organizations for alopecia/alopecia research. A very small amount of the hair they receive meets their criteria and is used for wigs for these patients.
Two other great organizations who accept hair donations are Wigs for Kids (wigsforkids.org) who require a 12 inch hair donation, and Pantene Beautiful Lengths, who only ask for an 8 inch donation. These organizations focus on patients with hair loss due to cancer and other diseases, and provide wigs at a discounted or no cost. Since they are not as widely known as Locks of Love, they receive a smaller amount of donations, and therefore less are "unusable". Their websites explain the guidelines for donating hair, so make sure you review before you donate, whether you donate to LoL, Pantene, or W4K, it's important you review the guidelines so that your donation doesn't get rejected!! I personally have donated 3 times to Locks of Love and have a donation to send in now - I will be sending in to Wigs for Kids this time around, but don't regret my past donations to LoL. Even if they did bring in $$, it is possible the funds went to charity or research for alopecia, so I feel that my donations could have made a difference.
I stock up on thrifty, but thoughtful gifts at great prices throughout the year and then I mail one box of birthday, mother's and father's day gifts altogether at once, as these dates are all close together. I leave it up to the fam if they want to wait and open on the "right" day or if they want to open everything at once.
The past couple of years we have agreed no presents for Mother's Day or Father's Day but instead we like to do free things like watch a movie as a family or go for a bike ride. Everyone is so busy that we don't get together as a family as often as we'd like. I will make dinner based on Dad's favorite foods, though.
We have a potluck at my parents' home. It lightens the financial load on everyone to just bring one dish. I coupon and bring supplies (napkins, paper plates, plastic cutlery) and drinks from my stock pile.
Unfortunately, my father has passed, but my husband and I usually go and spend the day with his parents and we BBQ. We also bring a card and a small gift, so it isn't very spendy. Just a nice relaxing day with his family.
Dad likes to enjoy his favorite meal with his family for Father's Day. We gather and each bring one of his favorite dishes for a picnic and spend the day playing games or just chatting. Money can't buy those kinds of memories.
I bought a house for 9K that was gutted. I put a lot into it to remodel it I used my 401K and some credit cards. I figure I can pay it off in two years. I no longer have rent or a mortgage. I tried to get a home equity to pay down high interest credit cards. I was denied the loan because I had a foreclosure three years ago. My house is worth 80k everything is new and up to code on the books. This country kills me. Hud said get a cash out for 100k and pay it back sooner. I really didn't want to owe anyone and not wanting to have a mortgage.
Call me crazy.
My husband loves to ride his motorcycle so I usually buy him a gift that he can use for riding...usually it's something that will provide extra protection. It usually isn't a surprise what he's getting for Father's Day, because most of the time it's riding gear. This year is no exception as I'm giving him riding boots. These gifts are what I would consider a splurge, but he's worth it.
Make dinner and a batch of his favorite cookies. He's a workaholic and is really hard to shop for, so just spending a whole day together catching up on life and telling stories is always a good gift.
Thank you this is really worth reading...good suggestions to read and share...........

We have a backyard BBQ!
We do a barbecue or a brunch at home instead of going out.
I keep it simple and focus on spending time together and focusing on gifts with sentimental value. Luckily, my dad enjoys the simple things, too.
Or the direct deposit of your paycheck starts going in late.
Yeah you are right that it is very good when we are debt free. We nothing to think, we can what we want and we can relax if we want.
Very nice and informative articles.
We have a family pot luck dinner and celebrate the dads in the family. They seem to like to have all the family together more than gifts.

Thanks! Great giveaway which would help greatly to pay off medical bills ($7500+) currently halting my debt payoff!
I spray painted my curtain rod shut. I have tried WD40, nail polish remover, a plumbers wrench and a hammer. Any ideas? HELP!
