  • Trick Yourself into Saving More of Your Biweekly Paychecks   14 years 32 weeks ago

Math is amazing. But I think the real trick is to badly want something.

If you do have clear goal, than it will be great motivator. This is how we did it on our way to financial independence.

I tend to splurge whenever I have family and friends visiting from far away. I guess I feel like I need to entertain them, and I use less discretion when spending.

I am generally very frugal in my normal life, so I think of it as my way of getting "excessive spending" out of my system. If anything, I would rather spend money on my friends and family to build memories rather than on items and products.

  • Effort vs. Results: The Difference Between Trying and Getting It Done   14 years 32 weeks ago

As much as saying "Well, I tried," is a good way to soothe over disappointment or even a lackluster performance, truly we learn as adults it doesn't fix a lack of results! I am all for goals and just need to fine tune my understanding of what crystallizes and fulfills goals and what is truly distracting or bogging me down to achieve them!

  • 9 Ways to Earn Extra Cash When Money Is Tight   14 years 32 weeks ago

Market Research companies are always a fun way to make some extra cash (and try out new products).

I'm still a fan of writing articles on revenue sharing websites (they share the advertising revenue with you) although this isn't a quick way it can be long term if the article becomes popular.

Then there are places like fiverr where you can do any silly thing for $5.

    Great tips.

  • How to Survive (and Thrive!) in a Job You Hate   14 years 32 weeks ago

For me, no amount of decorating or personalizing or any of those things is going to do much for me. I merely tolerate my job for the paycheck and I've come to terms that I will hate any job I can land because the only kinds of jobs I think I might actually enjoy are ones I lack the skills and experience in or just not cut out for it. I am attempting to go back to school parttime, but I'm still years and years away from ever achieving the level of skills I need to land the kind of job I would actually like. And to be truthful, I wouldn't even work if I didn't have to. I have plenty of other things to occupy my time so I don't care if someone calls me lazy because I don't work. I feel severely depressed thinking this is my lot in life and anything short of winnng the lottery or landing a rich husband is going to save me from this daily drudgery. If I had some talent or business diea, I would try to explore that but I lack both.

  • How Your Last Name Affects Your Spending Habits   14 years 32 weeks ago

Well, this IS very interesting. After the first paragraph it all made sense. I, too, am in the middle of the alphabet, and for the most part don't feel much of a pull in one direction or another when I purchase a deal. Lately, however, I have purchased quite a few and have thought to myself, "Maybe I should chill out on these deals." Now that I think about it, after reading this article made me realize that I did get a little exasperated back in my elementary days whenever the teacher did roll call or lined us up in the hall due to the fact that I had wait because my name appeared later on the list.

  • Ask the Readers: When Is It Okay to Splurge?   14 years 32 weeks ago

I think you need to make a little wiggle room in your budget for splurges, otherwise you can end up resenting the budget. Kind of like going on a diet and not allowing any "bad" foods until one day you break and eat an entire cheesecake or bag of chips. I usually let myself splurge once every month or two - but I still set a limit.

  • 51 Uses for Coca-Cola – the Ultimate List   14 years 32 weeks ago

I did not see it so here is my addition to the list. I know it works since I used the 'coke' method on Friday Oct 14th
    Des-skunk dogs
My 2 labs got skunked ... and bad. I used a total of 3L of Coke per dog massaged into their fur. Left it for a good 1/2 hour, then rinsed them off. I followed that with a good cleaning with dog shampoo. I dried them with towels and let them in the house. Skink smell was almost all gone. The next morning there was a faint smell of skunk just on their nose.
Today is Sunday and there is zero trace of the skunk smell.

  • John Cummuta: Transforming Your Debt Into His Wealth   14 years 32 weeks ago

As someone who has watched a friend use this program I can say that it works. Its more then just a bunch of free ideas from the internet bundled together and called a program. Its about looking at you spending habits, motivating you to want to get rid of your debt, and showing you how to do it.
Maybe for his next trick the author of this article could write automotive reviews after watching car commercials! Also, in less time then it took to read this article I found the program used on ebay for $65.

  • Ask the Readers: When Is It Okay to Splurge?   14 years 32 weeks ago

There are two things that I splurge on-- shoes and jeans. I wear jeans daily and need both to be comfy and last a long time, so to me, it's better to spend a little bit more on them. I do budget for them though.

  • Should You Lend to Friends and Family?   14 years 32 weeks ago

I have lent people money in the past but try to avoid it as much as possible. The best one was the time I had lent a friend money to gamble at the casino. I gave him 50$. of course i haven't seen him in months. I knew it was gone the minute I lent it to him

  • Stupid Reasons Why People Make More Money   14 years 32 weeks ago

I think the being mean is really a functional thing. That is, the meaner you are, the less other people will slack off on you. They will finish your projects first, they will make sure it's top notch, they won't try to push back on you. They know you'll be a raging you-know-what if you do, and they don't want any part of that.

But if you're nice, they're more likely to push your project back in favor of the angry client to create less static for themselves.

  • How to Succeed as an Online Student   14 years 32 weeks ago

Having earned a Masters Degree from a Top-10 College of Education (read: issues MA, EdM, and EdD degrees in education related fields of study), I can say that online courses can be just as good as an in-person course. But, unlike what most people may think of them, they often require more work to earn a good grade.

In a typical online course, a student is expected to actively participate in online forums - especially since they can participate asynchronously. That is, a student can leave a message in a forum at any time of day *and* not interfere with another student who may also answering the same question at the same time. More discussion tends to occur, and online teachers often say they do more work for an online class than for the in-person class.

But there is a big problem with online classes. One has to be self motivated. If you are the type who needs the discipline of a fixed time to attend class, many online classes will not serve your needs - discussion topics, reading assignments, etc. are posted on the class's bulletin board, and it is up to the student to make sure that he/she fulfills all the requirements of the course.

Yet, there are some online courses which have simply moved the lecture and q/a sessions online, mimicking the traditional classroom approach to education. These courses may be best for those who need immediate feedback while learning. If possible, a student who prefers the traditional learning approach should look for this type of online education if an online course is to be attempted for the first time.

The author's advice of creating a portfolio holds well for both online and traditional education - it can give a prospective employer a better of who you are and what you can contribute to a firm. It is something which I wish I had known to do earlier on in my career....

  • How to refill an ink cartridge with a small piece of tape   14 years 32 weeks ago

On Brother 240c, the tape over technique worked. I used regular color (beige?) masking tape cut into suitable tiny strips and push snugly in to cover the 2 depressions of each of the 3 so-deemed empty cartridges. Install my new black cartridge and it worked after some 5 cycles of 'cleaning'. For w while it did not seem to work, but it may take more than 5 cleaning cycles.

  • I Challenge You To Beat My Price.   14 years 32 weeks ago

I am all for bargain hunting and price comparison shopping, but my biggest concern is the quality of the item you are actually getting in the end. All items made come off the production line being graded A, B, C and D. The A items go to those distributors that pay and resell at a higher price. The D grade items as you can guess go to distributors that buy and resell them cheap. Example, USB memory sticks. Prices can really range from one place to another. The more expensive ones come with warranties for the chip. I have seen 4 GB ones with less than 1 GB of memory. I am not saying that you can’t get good product for an extremely attractive price, just make sure it is returnable and/or guaranteed.

  • How Closing a Small Business Can Grow a Better One   14 years 32 weeks ago

I have a brick and mortar promotional marketing company. After 8 years we are finally looking at going mostly web based. In order to keep competitive in a highly commoditized industry, we have to significantly reduce our overhead. My girlfriend and I also have our own online business – I know what you said about going into business with friends, but we are lucky enough to have been coworkers before becoming friends, so we work very well together. One of the goals of this business is to assist us financially while we look at making changes in our work situations. Everything happens for a reason and what happens next is quite often even better. Thanks for the great post.
