  • 6 Secret Homemade Stain Removers That Kick Butt   14 years 43 weeks ago

I just tried the Alkaseltzer on my grill rack and I must say I'm impressed. I think it would've worked a lot better if I could have used less water, but with the aid of my wire grill brush I can see Chrome again and I haven't seen that since the 4 other times I cleaned it before with just a wire brush and an S.O.S. pad. i used the Alkaseltzer gold since it didn't contain aspirin and it had better ingredients that seemed like it would get the rack cleaner.

  • Horizon Organic Milk: Is it All Just Lies?   14 years 43 weeks ago

Hmm... I wasn't a believer in organic anything - I always bought the cheapest milk money could buy. I laughed at people who wanted to pay more. But one sip of Horizon milk made a believer out of me if only for the taste. Either Horizon ships whole milk and calls it 2% or it is actually creamier and tastier than the cheapest 2% milk. So on a taste basis, I like Horizon milk. Maybe I should do another taste test between Horizon organic and a 'quality' brand name milk.

  • Ask The Readers: Do You Have a Financial Advisor?   14 years 43 weeks ago

We don't have a financial advisor, except what I learn on my own from websites like this, books, and whatever my husband's work offers about our retirement.

  • How to Make Your Own Power   14 years 43 weeks ago

@Beating Broke - There have been some huge improvements in solar power sources, like the smaller Solio's or solar powered backpacks. They are a great way to trickle charge small electronics. I'm curious as well what will happen over the next few years.

  • How to Make Your Own Power   14 years 43 weeks ago

@Life and My Finances - Human power is a low carbon footprint, and great exercise. Good luck on that push-mower!

  • How to Make Your Own Power   14 years 43 weeks ago

That's a good question. I would think that some potential home buyers would love it, and others would think it was an eye-sore. It really depends on how you would market the benefits of solar power to an existing buyer. If you are saving $100 a month, it's a definite up-sell!

I don't have a financial advisor, but probably should. I've been working and saving, but feel I could do better. I'm a little intimidated by the thought of an advisor.

  • Shhhhh: How to Block Out Noise   14 years 43 weeks ago

    Earplugs & White-Noise = Good Night's Sleep

Surprisingly simple and effective solution... been using it for many years in diverse environments.

Also, surprising how rare this good advice is in the popular media -- which otherwise dispenses mountains of lifestyle, health, and personal advice... and endlessly rehashes it.

Earplugs are good for noisy situations anywhere -- airplanes, waiting rooms, offices... even in movie theaters/concerts where the sound-systems are sometimes cranked up to uncomfortable levels. Quiet is not just for sleeping.

The 'white-noise' source for sleeping can vary.
There are lots of electronic 'white-noise-generators' in retail stores at very reasonable prices (but get one with a 'continuous' sound mode option). Simple room fans and/or air conditioner/heater fans are often effective noise-maskers, especially in combination with earplugs.
(Most air-conditioner/heaters have a "Fan-Only" option, if you don't want to affect room temperature).

In hotel rooms, improvise a white-noise source by tuning an AM-radio in between broadcast frequencies; tuning the TV to a blank channel often works too. Running the bathroom exhaust fan is another hotel option.

Great Post here from Meg Favreau !

  • 5 Effective Sleep Tips You Haven't Tried Yet   14 years 43 weeks ago

That's a great point Ingrid. I haven't dusted my bedside table for--um--longer than I care to admit. Thanks for the reminder. =)

Keeping your sleep area clean not only has physical benefits, but it also gives you a sense of calm. If my bedroom is messy, I feel really stressed and frazzled.

Grad school is an amazing experience, but it can really take a toll on your body. Take good care of yourself! Best of luck in grad school.

  • 5 Home and Family Items to Avoid Buying Used   14 years 43 weeks ago

Software can be a good deal used. Although it is licensed, that license can be transferred. However, I agree, try the freeware first. If that doesn't work, check out shareware (and remember to pay for it if you continue using it). The trick with licensing is knowing if the software was removed. But if you but the original disc (with holograms, etc.) I don't think you are going to get prosecuted.

Another option is to ask if your employer offers "home use" software, such as Office. I was able to get Office 2010 for $35 for home use.

  • Ask The Readers: Do You Have a Financial Advisor?   14 years 43 weeks ago

No, I do not use a financial advisor because they have a vested interest in something other than your finances - their finances. Take a step back and think about the fact that they need to make money as well, and no matter how nice they are, they're in finance to make money - not be your friend.

This may sound like a rather paranoid explanation, but in any endeavor you have to think about the other side of the equation, and in this case, your advisor and their intentions.

They're pitching you on what someone was pitching them during their latest monthly sales meeting, and they get a fee on placing your money in that financial product, which also charges an annual fee.

Study after study reveals that low-cost funds are the way to go. For me, I've learned from my own mistakes and buy only dividend paying, stable stocks for my portfolio.

Your holding period should be forever, and you should reinvest your dividends every quarter regardless of whether the market's up or down.

In 20 years, that tiny dividend will have grown and you'll have achieved a return on your money better than any hedge fund manager would have achieved buying and selling during that time. Good Luck.

  • How to Make Your Own Power   14 years 43 weeks ago

It's pretty awesome, the power that we have at out disposal if we just take the time and resources to tap into it. The industry has come a long way in the last few years, and it'll be interesting to see what happens over the next few years as oil becomes more and more expensive.

  • Shhhhh: How to Block Out Noise   14 years 43 weeks ago

They're renovating the duck pond right outside my apartment and so the fountain has been turned off for months. I didn't realize how much noise it cancelled out (especially from drunk people in the spa at night) until it was gone. Often I use earplugs and a white noise machine--sometimes both--to get to sleep.

I love my iPhone for the same reason. I didn't want to mention it in the article, since it's not a financial reality for everyone, but if you can afford an iPod touch or something similar, it really will save on tons of packing space!

It's great to hear of fellow 'unplanned convert.' I'm a planner- love to plan things months, even years in advance sometimes! My boyfriend has since convinced me to lay off the over planning and go with the flow, and our last trip together was a total unscheduled blast!
