  • Where Oh Where Are My Worms? Be On Your Toes When Ordering From Small Web Businesses   17 years 6 weeks ago

I got so wrapped up in this post...I just had to comment.

What it comes down to is customer service. Right or wrong...complete or incomplete addresses and orders - the whole ball of wax comes back to the company. As a small business owner I could never even conceive of treating any customer or client in such a manner as these worm people have done. Regardless of what transpired, this company''s so-called management team have just embarrassed themselves beyond repair. While they may be disgruntled at the feedback they recieved concerning their business practices, they had absolutely no right to get personal. Name-calling was just the additional proof that this company is not capable of handling business without getting personal and will not be able to provide good customer service when some waves are made. They can claim good ratings all they want but the proof is in their own emails.

If a company can not provide and does not promote good customer service over a box of worms, how can any other consumer expect fair treatment or (god forbid) quality customer service at any point? while I also can get frustrated with clients that don't pay or the constant complainers, I remain dignified and polite and then vent to my business partners later in private. It sounds like these wing dings couldn't get past proving some moot point to anyone they thought was listening.

Geez louise - I am sorry you had to go through such crap.

You provided the wrong shipping address by not updating your paypal. How is this the companies fault? Sure they could have sent an email asking for confirmation but the point of using paypal is that YOU provide the shipping address so that steps like that are unnecessary. Carrie this mistake is 100% on your shoulders, and when you post things like this it makes you look petty and stupid. Sure the business owner shouldn't have name called but I'm guessing there is a side to this we aren't seeing, like you're emails to the company in question.

Bottom line you're mistake, you should have paid again. If it were my company I'd have met you half way maybe with free worms if you paid the shipping just to keep some customer satisfaction.

I'm really surprised this is on wisebread. This is something for a personal blog especially considering the fact that it's the writers fault!

  • Top 6 Reasons Why Using Cash-Only Rocks   17 years 6 weeks ago

I am of an opposite opinion, I feel like its necessary to do both right now. credit cards make online purchases easier, rental or services usually only take them. Also in business its essential. Can you imagine giving an employee a couple hundred bucks and asking them to pick up the last minute supplies? Sometimes thousands? Without any automatic accounting? I use the card for most things and cash only for when its necessary. The difference is that I know I have the cash to back it up. Carrying around a couple thousand in my pocket is not going to make me feel safer. With either method you have to be responsible and know you're limits.

I use one credit card with a reward system and pay it off IN FULL each month. Since I started using it about three years ago, I've not incurred any financial cost, interest or otherwise, and have gotten about $300's worth of rewards.

If you can control your spending with a CC (and pay if off fully and timely), it can be a better deal than a cash-only system.

If you don't have that kind of self discipline and hate dealing with paper money, than a Visa/MC debit card would be a great solution.

Thanks for all of the useful information in this post for people like me, making a living online. Thanks for all for all of the insight and explaination. Plan on linking this to my own blog to help people understand the scams that are out there that can ruin a good opportunity for people.

To Guest: I do have a check card linked to my bank account for convenience purposes that I do use but which still forces me to have the cash in the bank to use it.

To GT0163C: I should have clarified that I don't beleive credit cards are inherently bad in the least. some people are able to manage them very successfully and reap the rewards they can earn. I, personally, have chosen to continue living a cash-only life because it has really been working for me and my family. I don't feel the need or the want to have a traditional credit card.

thanks to everyone for all of the great comments/observations so far!

By cash only are you including debit cards or do you mean only paper and change money? I am not sure if I would want to give up the debit card.

It is truly unforunate that carrie failed to state what REALLY HAPPENED and what REALLY was said. carrie was EXTREMLY aggressive and threatening to do, as she has done with her blogs, a smear campaign from the very beginning of discovering that she provided the wrong address. I followed EVERY possible road with her VERY politely and even offered up the complete dialog and tracking numbers for people who think they should be involved to see for themselves ALL the facts. Carrie edited them with a hachet!

My ONE comment at the very end of our ordeal and extreme frustration was to say that "I give up, you just don't get it, you were wrong and yet we still tried to please you. I guess there is no pleasing you. I guess you are just a bit.. I knew after I pushed send I should not have lost my cool, but she is NO sweet, calm, quiet, home Momma. My apologies to my sisterhood, but in her words,it's not libel if it's true!

I agree. I think that for those who have issues with using credit cards, transitioning to a cash only system or a cash mostly system can be a wonderful thing. However, there is nothing inherently bad about credit cards. For those who are able to use them well consistently, they can be a great convenience and offer some very nice rewards.

Congratulations on becoming debt-free soon! And, more so, to being free to pursue your life dream of writing for a living! I know these feelings very well and count them as two of the happiest moments in my life! I worried that I'd take these things for granted someday; but, so far (1 and 2 years later), I'm happy to report: not ... even ... close!! : )

I've never carried a balance on my CC. The cash back rewards are great. Plus the bonus of convenience of ordering things online, the savings I get verses buying at B&M store.

I agree! Cash only holds you to your budget better than any other method. Scanning a piece of plastic just isn't the same as handing over a dollar bill.

    Thanks,
    Nate

    Great thoughts.

I read somewhere that people spend 30% more when they go to a store and use a credit card. Have you seen this documented?

  • How to bake sourdough bread (and save a buck on every loaf)   17 years 6 weeks ago

I've been reading a bit about sourdough starters and the part I don't get is how often do you have to feed your refrigerated starter so that it doesn't die? If I want to feed it and bake a loaf of bread once a week, is that enough? And sticking the starter right back in the fridge, will it be ok time and time again?

  • 7 ways to spot a social media snake oil salesperson   17 years 6 weeks ago

Torley, this is a tremendous overview about how any buyer should be qualifying potential partners in the Social Media world. I've been selling (helping people buy) marketing systems and technology for 25 years and what you are saying is true in any industry. There has been a lot of discussion around how Social Media itself is in fact changing the "sales" process in all industries. To a certain degree, using our own SM technology will help weed out the "Snake oil sellers" from the really strong players in this space.

  • Laid Off? You May Have to Fight for Unemployment Benefits   17 years 7 weeks ago

I guess one benefit of having worked (and gotten laid off from) a big company is that you are somewhat less likely to have to go through hassles like this.

I posted this article on the forum at The Free Agents , which is a social network for unemployed people (more casual than something like LinkedIn, and intended to help you meet others and figure out whats next). I'm interested to see what people on that community have to say, and I hope not too many have had to go through this type of garbage.

  • Avoid Big Dental Bills with Safe and Inexpensive Products   17 years 7 weeks ago

After missing years of dental appointments, I saw a dentist last year who promptly identified 13 cavities in my mouth. Horrified, I pursued his staff to help me set up the best plan for getting all of those fillings. When they hedged, instinct told me to get a second opinion. And that opinion found one cavity.

I was lucky -- my parents could and did afford us regular dental visits. After that experience with a Wyoming dentist, I've renewed my commitment to keep my teeth until the day I die.

I'll be sure to check out Dr. Ellie's blog -- and I'm so grateful to have found a blog dedicated to oral health! Thanks!

Hate it when I receive unsolicited invites to join social networks that actually are set up under the guise of 'networking and camaraderie,' when in fact it's just another ploy to lure you into products they sell or services they offer. The real decoys!

  • Saving the Planet - One Drop at a Time   17 years 7 weeks ago

Here is a little idea I use to take a shower. It's from Japan actually, I take a 1 or 2 gallon bucket with a scooper and use this. I fill it with warm water by first turning on the hot water only at a trickle and letting it fill the bucket. By the time the bucket is full the water is hot so you end up with a warm bucket of water. I take the scooper and pour a few scoops of water over my head and body, then soap up, and then scooper rinse. I usually can take a shower in this method using around 4 gallons of water or less. This will not be a surprise to any Asians out here since this is a normal method of bathing; however for non-asians this will probably sound new. You save a lot of water and a lot of electricity.

    Aloha Guill.
