  • What It Really Costs to Own a Home   16 years 8 weeks ago

I am a homeowner and let me tell you there are positives and negatives - the costs are worth it, but I'm glad that this article is making people aware of the commitment. I have found that the most expensive part of owning a house is the maintenance and home improvement work that has to be constantly done! I usually use this site to get an idea of what my next home improvement project will cost me.

I only write checks for rent and student loan payments. ING Direct does an e-check sort of thing, but I haven't used it yet... maybe I will resort to that when it comes time to order more paper checks.

  • Baby carrots the frugal idea thats isnt   16 years 8 weeks ago

Anyone who has their eye on the price would know that baby carrots are not frugal. If you actually LOOK at them, and have a passing familiarity with whole carrots, you would be able to tell that they are remnants. No carrot grows this way. I grew some thumbelina carrots last year and they still had the morphology of a whole carrot (ie: the crown where the stems sprouted).

Now on the big F level, I do not see how using the scraps of gnarly carrots should be offensive to someone who would choose gnarly crooked off color organic carrots over supermodel carrots of the conventional variety.

  • 7 Mistakes That Can Ruin Your Yard Sale   16 years 8 weeks ago

If you are serious about an item be prepared to make a good down payment on it & have the seller give you a WRITTEN, SIGNED AGREEMENT OF SALE & MAKE SURE THE ITEM BELONGS TO THE HOMEOWNER & THEY INCLUDE THEIR ADDRESS & PHONE NUMBER ON THIS receipt , ALSO & VERY IMPORTANT make an AGREEMENT on the SALE SLIP as to how much time will be allotted for you to RETURN & MAKE THE PURCHASE, say it's 4hrs or 6hrs or 24hrs & if you dont come back or call the SELLER in that time then the SELLER has the right to keep your deposit & to SELL the Item!!!! You could also put in the sale that if the seller sells the item for say at least 85% of his asking price, as long as you keep her/him advised of your situation and that allows him to re-sell it, then & only then you'll get your deposit back, but ALL THIS HAS TO BE IN WRITING & SIGNED BY BOTH OF YOU IN ADVANCE !!! This way YOU'LL BE ABLE TO GO GET HELP to TAKE THE ITEM HOME (A TRUCK, PERHAPS) & you'll have time to get someone to help you carry it, load it & unload + to put it in your home !!! Also, the seller wont be able to sell it for a HIGHER PRICE after you've left !!! And agreement to sell/purchase, with a written agreement & a deposite is A LEGAL CONTRACT & if it is sold out from under you, you can bring Legal Charges !!!!! Make sure the SELLER knows that YOU KNOW the LAW by saying something like, "Well, now we're bound together by law, unless I dont come back in time !!!"

  • 52 Uses for Rubber Bands   16 years 8 weeks ago

When I was a kid, we tied them together and made a big loop we called a "Chinese jumprope." If you don't remember how to play, you can find the different step patterns online.
Now I use rubber bands for freezing. I brown ground beef and drain it, or cut up leftover chicken or turkey, then apportion it into small plastic bags (usually the ones that used to hold frozen vegetables), then fold them tightly and secure with rubber bands. Later, when I want to make chili, I pull out a bag.
I use a rubber band to hold my wallet closed. Its snap is faltering, so I wrap a band around the whole thing.

THE PAYPAL $12 Dollar MONEY-MAKING METHOD
Now honestly, what is twelve Dollars, especially out of a Paypal account?
    In exchange
you will make thousands in the first few months.
I sent out my measly $12.00 to the six people on the list. Within 7
days, I started: getting $$$$$ in
    my account!
I was shocked! I figured it would end soon, but the CASH just kept
coming in. In my first week, I made
about $25.00. By the end of the second week I had made a total of over
    $1,000.00! In the third week
I had over $15,060.00 and it's still growing. This is now my fourth
week and I have made a total of just
over $26,000.00 and it's still coming in rapidly. It's certainly worth
$12.00 and 6 minutes to send it out.

  • The Pros and Cons of Paying Cash for a House   16 years 8 weeks ago

The costs of home ownership vary with the age of the house and its location. The biggest expenses are things like the roof, sewers, termites, and so forth. Insurance and taxes are also pretty high. Renting is usually a worse deal, though.

I spend around $18,000 on rent, and the annual repair expenses are around $500 right now. Taxes etc, I'm guessing around $3k. If the landlord fixed everything that needed fixing, it would cost around $10,000, but that's a one time expense. Realistically, he could amortize it over 5 years or so - $2,000 per year. Also, the roof is a 15 year expense, and the sewage a 20 year expense if you don't maintain it. It's an old house. You can save that up by socking away around $2,000 a year.

So the annual expenses out of pocket are around $7,500. The other $10,500 is for the labor involved in managing the books, paying the mortgage, etc. (i.e. nothing) I looked up the sale price on propertyshark, and, basically, the landlord is breaking even on that part. In return, he's getting ownership of the house.

Net revenues are not high - sometimes I'm sure they're negative - but the fact is simple: the owner increases their equity, the renter does not. RENT is an acronym for Return Equity Not to Tenant. :)

At worst, the owner can bail out and recover cash from the house. Meanwhile, the renter can be rendered homeless.

  • 7 Mistakes That Can Ruin Your Yard Sale   16 years 8 weeks ago

Great tips, I am a garage sale junky and some of the best deals I have found were from sales that were off the beaten path and poorly advertised. The best method for buying cheaply is to return later in the day and find that they have sold very little.

  • How to Get Laid Off: A Step-By-Step Guide   16 years 8 weeks ago

Its interesting that I found such an article on the web. I guess its not just me who thinks like this ! Its not that I hate my job, but getting laid off (atleast in this economy) seems like an easy way out to get a temporary break from the rat race and explore new opportunities and discover myself.

Though I don't hate my job, I dont love it either. Maybe a few months off without worrying too much about the bills will let me do things I've always wanted to and find something I can wake up to with a smile on my face!

Great article, things I have been thinking about as well though some items are doable, others can get a little messy atleast if you want to leave with a good reference. I guess you have to play your cards accordingly...

  • netSpend: The Story of the Visa Debit Card We Did Not Apply For   16 years 8 weeks ago

I bought a Netspend Visa yesterday at my local convenience store. I needed to make a payment on my car. I usually have it taken out of my bank but I was late on a payment and needed to pay it quick. I have done this one other time with another company and as soon as the store scanned it, it was loaded and ready to go. Not the case with this awful product. The first time they (the credit company) ran it through, it didn't work. I then spent 20 minutes of hell trying to get it set up over the phone. They make you go through so many unwanted items they offer and you can't just skip them. I finally set my pin number and then had my credit company run it again. Didn't work. Now, they tell me they can't accept this card from me and I need to get a money order. Great. Now my money is tied up in this card and I can't get it to work. Now, I want to just talk to a human being. I call the number and have to go through 20 more minutes of the same questions and set up all over again until finally I get someone. I tell her I just want this card activated so I can get my money. I don't want anything sent to me later. She said she was sorry and it was all set. Now, onto the fees. You have to pick one of three plans before you can even get access to your money. Remember, this is money you have to put on this card. You have had it to begin with. They have so many fees to chip away at your money. It is $1 just to buy something. It is $2 to use it at a Atm and the bank itself charges you. This company is GARBAGE!!
