We agree with you that tuition will not cost in the six digit but a solution can be to help students see that they can earn(and that is the key word "earn") a scholarship or grant. We have a variety of awards for kids that only have a 2.5 gpa up to a 5.0 gpa. So there is hope for the next generation. Check out Freetoapply.com and search our free database.

    I love a cold shower!

    Except in winter... :S

  • The Costa Rica Lesson: Awwwwwww They Got Me   18 years 1 week ago

It's never nice to hear that someone doesn't like your work, but it's not like those of who were critical went off ranting at the author. He's not the worst writer in the world, but the grammar and sentence structure (and proofreading for typos) could be a whole lot better.

I'm all for informative, entertaining stories, but the article above simply does not meet the level of competent writing that I've come to expect from this blog.

And I don't care if this is the same caliber of writing that one may find in college classrooms. A lot of people can't write - that just means you're keeping poor company.

I'd love to hear more from the author, but only if he gets someone to proofread his work before submission.

I love the WiseBread recommends Andrea's "Speak Ghetto" article as a good read for this one!  LOL

I admit that it took me some getting used to at first, but if you're at all familiar with his other pieces, this is not at all unusual.  Point of the article is good, regardless of what you think of Jabulani's style.

  • Trying Out CVS Madness   18 years 1 week ago

Returns are indeed tricky. I use many, many manufacturer q's in my shopping, and with a few $/$$ CVS q's here and there (they get more and more scarce), and then rolling ecb's, I try not to spend cash money, but I buy a lot of stuff. BUT, I have a lot of problems with ecb's not printing, so I do return stuff and then rebuy it or buy the right thing if I am having a problem, and the cashiers who know me very very very well, help me. BUT, managers hate it. They don't appreciate the really smart CVSers, they work too many hours to be bothered with having to come to the register to help, and I've run up against some truly rude ones in the last few months. My mistake, I called corporate. Instead of dealing with my complaint, they deactivated my card, and said that I returned too much. They never compared receipts and noticed that I bought it or similar items right back, they accused me of coupon fraud and intimated that they could press charges. Loyalty program??? I think not.

  • No Hot Water: Now What?   18 years 1 week ago

I agree, that steam can be very dangerous.  We only use it to clean, of course.  (and the kids are never allowed to be near it.)

I also like the camping shower idea!  It is a good idea for a single person (or a couple that would like to share!)

  • No Hot Water: Now What?   18 years 1 week ago

All of these are great ideas, except for the steam. That can be very dangerous if not done properly.

Those black bag camping showers make scaling hot water after about an hour in the sun in the middle of summer up north. I have seen people take black plastic barrels (food grade) and put a water spigot on the side. Then you have a huge solar water heater.

Wow...people that are cheap AND mean. I'm of the opinion that the 8th deadly sin is contempt. Writing is very personal. ::sigh:: Fast forward... in 20 years they will be alone, still reading blogs and sharing their weightless opinions.

  • The Costa Rica Lesson: Awwwwwww They Got Me   18 years 1 week ago

To be honest...I thought his writing style was unique and fine. Yeah, I was confused at points, but you can't tell me half of the stories you read in a college lit class don't confuse the hell out of ya. I was an English writing major and am in law school now...and truth be told, this surpasses a lot of my cohort's work.

  • The Costa Rica Lesson: Awwwwwww They Got Me   18 years 1 week ago

Wow, I can't believe the flak this post is getting for its writing style! Personally, I found it amusing.

Now I'm off to read the remix version, which I think will make me giggle out loud.

  • The Costa Rica Heist (Remix) A case for T.I.   18 years 1 week ago

Didn't get the first post but I do understand the remix a lot better. Thanks for writing.

You're right no one is ever going to like everything you do. And I was expecting a post like this when I did a New York, New York post and i know it's like apologizing to critics. Actually it was like a sardonic "open you minds," response instead of writing on comments. It's a weblog, not an essay contest. Sorry I dissapointed you, I hope to make a better second impression. Keep readin' Wisebread though. And thank you geniunely on the advice to writing to my audience.

  • The Costa Rica Lesson: Awwwwwww They Got Me   18 years 1 week ago

I don't think this post is poorly written overall. I think the post is partly in AAVE, which suggests that it's grammatical in its language, though there are still a few spelling and word choice errors, etc. I think it's poorly punctuated: commas, quotation marks, etc., would clear up any of the places that I had to read over a couple of times to get. Perhaps it would be interesting to know more about who understands it and who doesn't; then we would know what language to translate it into.

Otherwise it was very clear to me and sounded like someone telling a story in person and was a fun change of pace, though I do like the more "article" style posts very much as well. I don't believe that all blogs need to sound completely formal, considering that they grew out of personal diaries.

  • The Costa Rica Heist (Remix) A case for T.I.   18 years 1 week ago

So, if your posts get negative comments, you're just going to post them again?

Dude, just write for your audience, since apparently some people liked your style.

I and others simply didn't, but who are we to judge? We have a delete key and an unsubscribe button and we all know how to use them.

But seriously, if we didn't like it the first time, we likely won't care to read it again. We might be willing to give you the benefit of the doubt on your next article, and go into it with an open mind, but reminding us how much we didn't like your first post? I just don't know why you would think that's a good idea.

Not a good first impression as far as I'm concerned, and even more disappointed after the remix.

  • 7 tips to avoid watching a crappy movie.   18 years 1 week ago

Too often nowadays when we want to sit in the dark & watch a movie we stare at the marquee and realize that there's nothing there worth spending the $ on - I increasingly feel foolish having spent $ on a movie - only to see it pop up later on cable! So we spend that part of our entertainment $ on cable TV - TCM and the Sundance Channel and so on. I do scan the reviews to keep up and can catch the films I was interested in later - the types I like go in & out almost to quickly to catch them, anyway! But there is still sitting in the dark - we also have gone to free movie screenings, just to have that experience!

My dad ready freakanomics ... I think. How interesting that his sons were such opposites. Kind of makes you wonder how Moonunit and Dweasel Zappa are doing these days.

I watched it on the plane in to San Jose from Houston so I had already seen it. Excellent. Fantastic. It has special resonance because my mother's family is from Marshall Texas.

Didn't answer the most burning question:

Did you ever get to see "Great Debaters", or not? Cause not getting to see it may have been the most painful part of the story.. (loved it, loved it.)

Sorry to hear about your trip, and thanks for translating.  LOL

  • The Costa Rica Heist (Remix) A case for T.I.   18 years 1 week ago

I've been to Costa Rica three time (Jaco once) and loved it every time. Each time I've gotten a little careless and had small things snagged when I wasn't looking. It does pay to to have travel insurance for the peace of mind.

One thing to watch out for in Jaco is the traffic police. I got shaken down by them one night. The actual police are great though. Helped me out of serious jam in Puerto Viejo.

    Hey there,

From the nature of the second post, I gather that some folks didn't understand your loose writing style.

    well.

For the record, I "got it" the first time, and thought it was a pretty funny ancedote.

Sorry you lost your stuff, that is suckaroonie. Glad you had a fab vacay, tho.

    Keep on writin'.
