  • One Way to Combat High Prices - Just Run Out of Gas   17 years 47 weeks ago

Last time I checked, it was illegal to run out of gas on the expressway. You can expect a nice ticket along with your free gallon of gas.

  • One Way to Combat High Prices - Just Run Out of Gas   17 years 47 weeks ago

Hi funny you should mention this as i saw one of our dear bobbies (policemen) filling up someones car the other day and i thought to myself hang on a minute where did that petrol come from. I have since found out that it was not the policemans and all he had done was take the driver to a petrol station to fill up her can, it would have been illigal for the police to carry a can of petrol with them over here in the UK.

So i didn't realise you had this HERO service in the US, nice trick if you can get away with it but like you say it really isn't fair for the tax payers to have to payout for it. They should charge the driver for it.

I'm nowhere near an area that has a HERO squad.  Our only option is to hoof it to the nearest gas station, or call AAA to deliver it (for a fee.)  Running out of gas would be tragic for me (having to carry young children along the side of the road or highway), so we have a 1/4 tank rule at our house.  The rule?  Don't let it get less than a 1/4 tank.  The consequences are far too costly.

Thanks for enlightening me.  I had no idea!

  • Things to insure, things not to insure   17 years 47 weeks ago

@Michael: you say that most people should be able to pay for medical care out-of-pocket, and there's no need for medical insurance except for catastrophes. I disagree. One of the more expensive medical expenses is childbirth, and people tend to have children early in their working life, when they have the least money. They also tend to have more than one child, and, in this time frame, they might also want to buy a house.

If this expense is spread out across many people, via insurance, or via socialized medicine, or something in-between, it's good for society.

The alternative would be to allow people to carry long-term debt for childbirth. Then, banks would be getting involved in this expense, and there's potential for a raft of problems associated with consumers choosing excessive services, or conversely, going with "discount childbirth."

    @philip: great article, great premise.

Don't blame you if you remove all the above, just meant to post the disclaimer at the end, sorry. I do apologize.

  • 7 tips to avoid watching a crappy movie.   17 years 47 weeks ago

come on, unethical?? Oh brother. I think the site's been around for awhile, and not every movie is there once the powers that be find out about it, but I see nothing terribly wrong about this. And not all have been copied with hand-held cameras. I can understand in your position here how you might not want to recommend it, but I'm personally tickled to death to have found it. No, the quality ain't the greatest, quite a few don't download properly but it's like a smorgasboard. You can find out quickly if you'd bother blowing even a buck to rent a movie this way.

Another recommendation for finding movies you might want to see is to have a favorite actor/actress list of movies. You can check out the IMdB for this, very handy for reserving movies at the library.

  • 6 Warning Signs that It Is Not the Job for You   17 years 47 weeks ago

Is it just me? Or do I notice a lot of this type of job being offered on craigslist? I don't know how it stays in operation with all the scams I keep hearing and reading about. The only bright spot seems to be in the "erotic" section. Prices have seem to come down since the Elliot Spitzer scandal. Lots more girls are putting their ads up, creating an over supply, and then realize they have to lower their prices if they want any business. That's a hell of a way to make money though. Blame the movie "Pretty Woman". Yeah, sure, like that's going to happen to you. Just remember....recessions bring out the scammers, and this is the first really bad recession with the internet hype began in 1995. I don't count they 2001 slow down as a recession. Jobs weren't being off shored to India in droves, gas didn't cost $4.50 a gallon, and people were able to keep themselves afloat by taking out home equity loans. Of course, that was all just a prelude to the problems we have today.

  • Things to insure, things not to insure   17 years 47 weeks ago

Michael, I hate those extended warranties too! But I think the same principle applies -- cover what you can't afford to replace. I read in Consumer Reports that laptops are one of three things that it's worth buying an extended warranty for, and I was glad I followed their advice!

The one and only time I purchased an extended warranty plan was for my laptop. That $300 plan covered a $700 part that broke down less than two weeks before the warranty ran out. It turns out this particular make of computer was prone to this kind of problem. I wonder how many people got caught?

I can afford to replace my ipod (or do without it) if it breaks, but I couldn't afford to replace a computer so easily, and my schooling (when I bought it) and now my work depend on it.

  • Free Doughnut   17 years 47 weeks ago

I love Donuts although, too many will make you look like one.

I have a beef, I like WiseBread but there is one problem, first I am in Canada and most of the cool offers available in the United States I can't get, second this donut offer is GRAND only problem is that Krispy Kreme was here in Canada for about 2 yrs then because they could not compete with our major coffee and donut chain (which is equal to Dunkin Donuts in the US) they packed there suitcase and left.

I know this is not WiseBreads fault so please don't take it as a personal attack I still love wisebread but if you could post more offers that maybe us Canadians could benifit from it would be even GRANDER :)

  • No Hot Water: Now What?   17 years 47 weeks ago

Haha, here we have a so called "heater" which only works when the weather is already hot and you want to bathe in cold water instead.

    What did I do?
I got an electric kettle :)
    Sure saved me time.

This is a considerable pile of corporate welfare. It will be exploited just like the SUV & Truck tax credit was.

If the government actually wanted to do something to facilitate home ownership they could expand HUD programs that help get people into guaranteed fixed rate loans.

I heard that the Democrats were going to reject and PAC or Lobbyist money during the rest of the election. I hope that becomes a trend.

  • 7 tips to avoid watching a crappy movie.   17 years 48 weeks ago

I checked that out, to me it seems highly illegal. Most of the time, the videos available are hand-held cam footage that's been taken in a theater. Other good versions are illegal DVD rips. I can't imagine that place will be around for much longer, and I'd advice against it for ethical reasons and also the bad quality. Try hulu.com as a good source of free, legal online streaming movies. They also serve up TV shows.

  • 9 Ways to Beat a Killer Headache   17 years 48 weeks ago

I get terrible headaches from so many things: sinuses, eyestrain, lack of sleep, too much sugar, no caffiene. I have found that rubbing a little bit of peppermint oil on my temples, cheekbones, and the back of my neck really help. It can be purchased at a health food store or online. I paid $20 for a 1 oz bottle and I absolutely love it. A little goes a long way and DO NOT rub your eyes or other sensitive areas!

  • More Tax Credits Coming for Homebuyers?   17 years 48 weeks ago

I agree with you that our government should stop messing with the housing market. They have enough to worry about and should let the free market take care of itself. If the federal government would stop wasteful spending on pork and downsize the workforce we could balance the budget and give more money to every American by less taxation.

  • Trying Out CVS Madness   17 years 48 weeks ago
    Wow

Guest, that is interesting information. I'm sorry for what happened to you. Leaves me -- and many others I am sure -- wondering, how many returns are TOO many?

I actually have a bag of Chex Mix sitting by my front door that is expired by several months. I want to bring it back to exchange, but I know they will insist on doing a full return and re-purchase. I have some bottles of soda with a similar situation -- I got regular but wanted diet. Is it all counting against me??

FYI to others -- usually if my ECBs don't print, I call the CVS customer care after 48 hours and if I truly bought the right thing, they will add them to my account. They have even given me a "courtesy" buck when I complained that the wording of the ad was too vague and I felt I should have gotten an ECB for something they said was not covered in the promo.
