  • 2012 is Coming: What Are You Doing About It?   17 years 52 weeks ago

I once thought about how my life would change if I won the lottery. I do more bicycle touring. I spend more time exercising, reading, working on hobbies, paying attention to spiritual things...

Then, I realized that I could be doing all that right now, to some extent.

Misinterpretation. This age will end, ushering in a new, golden age; not the end of the world. Or, conversely, the calendar will restart; not the end of the world.

It's too late to look up more. Search on google, read some books. Blah blah, stuff. I did a lot of research of this a few years ago for a concept album. The rest of the band rejected the idea, so the research is archived somewhere in the bowels of hundreds of gigs of unsorted data.

Great way to make people stand-up and start thinking/making hopefully positive changes in thier lives...Great Article!

12/12/12 is a pretty neat date, but people have been saying that stuff for a long time about a lot of different dates. I think when I have kids they aren't even going to believe that my generation got so worked up about Y2K.

I get the idea, though: you should make the best of each day, because for all we know the world could end on 12/12/12. Fair enough. I think you are right.

"It’s kitschy in color scheme (read: that’s so gay)"

Was that supposed to be a joke?

  • 2012 is Coming: What Are You Doing About It?   17 years 52 weeks ago

I think all those end of the world prophecies are nonsense and exist to scare the poop out of people and keep them religiously compliant.

You can have happiness in the here and now even if your circumstances are not perfect by being in the moment instead of perpetually unhappy and only living for "more".

That doesn't mean you should not have plans or goals. They just should not be the basis of your existence.

I know this one guy that is just sure Jesus is coming and it is going to happen in 2007. Well the last time I talked to him that was the date he was getting told at church. He said he was doing everything he could to hasten it including supporting more and more war around the world. He saw wasting gas as hastening the second coming.

So there certainly ARE people where the idea of the end of the world can be a tad destructive to your psyche.

  • 13 Ways To Be Nice That Will Cost You Barely Anything   17 years 52 weeks ago

Something else I like to do is smile. I read this poem before and it says, "If you pass someone who is too weary to give a smile, then leave yours". It has always stuck with me. I always smile even if someone looks unhappy.

  • What's an employee to do? Part 2   18 years 3 sec ago

My current job outsourced half its work to India. This work used to pay $11-12 an hour, full benefits: medical, dental, 401K, vacation and sick time, national holidays and weekends off. Employees were recognized (at least verbally) for working weekends, learning new skills, or just shoveling out a large load of work in a quality manner.

The job is now on production plus a minimum 98% quality checks; both have to be met weekly to keep your job. (We get split personality emails throughout the day: Work faster! Slow down, pay more attention to quality! Work faster!) The production requirement was raised 3 times this year. Pay is 6-1/2 cents per line. We have to stay online when schedules, even when the work slows down, but are only paid for actual lines produced.

Our new medical is $300 a month, $3,000 deductible, covers 70%, with no pre-existing condition coverage for 1 year.
No vacation, sick time or holidays, just a "leave bank" based on hours worked. Get the flu, have surgery? No days off for you this year!. All schedules require 1 weekend day, same pay as weekdays. The only holidays they "recognize" are Christmas and Thanksgiving, which pay double per line. You don't take them off without approval (20 slots for 180 employees). Work on holidays is normally just a trickle, and you miss family time to sit there, only being paid for lines produced.

"You people should remember how easy you are to replace. There are a lot of people looking for work." My current boss said this in a staff meeting, when asked why earned leave time couldn't be approved when we needed it. Seems leave can only be taken based on workload, at the company's discretion, not because an employee needs it for something foolish like dental work or a sick relative.

To complete our frustration, we were asked to sign up for extra hours with incentive pay to cover "Vishnu." Seems this is a religious holiday in India. Brief investigation showed that 1) Our Indian counterparts have their life priorities straight, and 2) They have more cojones. The company attempted to "make" them work on Vishnu last year. Their team lead politely explained how nobody in their right mind was going to put a day at work ahead of this cherished time of spiritual and family celebration. She was ignored. Her team members listened to the requirement with respectful attention. Then they all stayed home, reappearing promptly when the holiday was over. Namaste, my friends, and thank you for the life lesson.

In the 70s I got laid off and out of desperation went to a temp firm. It supported me for 2 years, until I foolishly reentered the "stable" job market. I looked on a couple websites: the temps are offering medical, dental, 401K, vacation and holiday pay, flexible scheduling. But what if the work drops off and there's nothing for a while? Well, that would be like... like... where I am now, only with a better schedule and benefits! If I am going to be a wage slave, I must choose my masters more wisely :)

  • Throw a House Party for Free   18 years 34 min ago

I was able to get into the Hershey's Bliss House Party, and I invited several people and got my "host" package today.  Included was:

9 bags of Hershey's Bliss Chocolate (3 different flavors)

    15 gift bags

    15 pens

    15 grocery list notepads

    15 magnets

    a photo album

    napkins..

The chocolate (I sneaked a taste) is decadent!  We'll enjoy this at my "ladies only" coffee House Party I'm holding!  Plenty of chocolate to have at the party, and tons to give out as party favors.

  • Get Paid for your Psychic Skills at Predictify   18 years 46 min ago

This is just a timewasting game. If it's fun, well and good, but 'Get paid' doesn't belong in the headline for this article. 'Getting paid' to me means getting a reasonable return for my investment of time and skill.

  • Why You Should Donate a Blood Sucking Timeshare   18 years 2 hours ago

Unfortunately many times it isn't as easy as it seems to get rid of an unwanted timeshare. The charities aren't accepting every timeshare they are presented with, as some of them aren't worth the maintenance fees which are charged. There are a growing number of companies that are actually charging people thousands of dollars to take timeshares off their hands. NuWire did an article about how timeshares are horrible investments, that is certainly worth reading.

  • Hungry? Have a drink.   18 years 2 hours ago

I have a Brita pitcher and I LOVE it. Every time I fill up my nalgene bottle I think about how I'm not going to spend $1.25 to get a bottle out of the vending machines on campus.

I also really like my nalgene bottle because it reminds me to drink and it helps me keep track of how much I drink a day.

I followed the steps and my Auto-Tuning level was set to highly restricted. I wonder if this issue was fixed with the Windows Vista SP1 update.

  • Quick Vista Hack to Get You Browsing at High-Speed Again   18 years 3 hours ago

I personally tried it the way mentioned in my article, and it worked.  I have seen many web sites picking one or the other.  I'm not sure the difference, or which one is better.

  • Tips For Starting (Or Jumpstarting) Your Exercise Regimen   18 years 3 hours ago

I agree whole heartedly with the idea of setting up workout times as appointments. I like to call them dates however. I have a very good friend that I like to go swimming with at least 4 times a week. We eat a healthy lunch together, do our work out, and then eat a healthy dinner afterwards. Setting up my workout time as a date with my friend really makes me want to work out. Whenever we have to skip a day, it makes me sad that I will be missing out on such a wonderful afternoon!

  • Pricing Eggs, and New Egg Products   18 years 3 hours ago

Eggs are a part of my diet that I cannot live without but the price is making it so that I can't buy them every week when I'm at the store. It makes me crazy that I have to spend so much money to do something that is such a basic need in order to survive.

I am really looking into getting a laying hen to save on my grocery bill.

  • What's an employee to do? Part 2   18 years 3 hours ago

Basically, I think you're right--it was always good sense to take charge of your own career.  It just wasn't important from the 1940s through the 1980s.

When things were changing (all through the 1990s), it was pretty common for employees (especially older employees) to let employers talk them into making sacrifices in the name of a loyalty that no longer went both ways.  I don't think there's much of that going on any more--and I think companies have given up a lot in exchange for a little cost flexibility.

I'm still hoping that companies will eventually come to regret that they've forced everyone to be a mercenary instead of an employee, but I'm not really expecting it any more.

Oh, and yeah--who in their right mind would pass up a chance to get Leonardo da Vinci to do the illustration for their post?

  • What's an employee to do? Part 2   18 years 3 hours ago

cool picture and cool post.  Since I started working in the "new economy" I feel that companies really have no loyalty to their own employees so I don't have the need to be loyal when there is a better opportunity.  It's true that my generation don't really care about seniority, either.  Ultimately, I think that it's good that people are forced to change and learn throughout their careers.

  • Quick Vista Hack to Get You Browsing at High-Speed Again   18 years 3 hours ago

Everywhere I have seen this discussed(including MS sites) the command was:
netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=
    You have:
netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=

Not sure if it matters, just something I noticed when looking into what auto tuning was doing.

  • Dealing with Nasty Debt Collectors   18 years 4 hours ago

I am not a deadbeat, nor am I poor, I make great money, however, my spouse got extremely injured (on the job) and was out of work for over a year due to the many surgeries he needed. I had to put my electric and other bills on the credit cards. Going from two incomes to one is hard! It has been two years, and we are still trying to get caught up. The people that call are rude and only worry ablout your commissions. It should be easier to set up a payment plan, but if you do not have the hundred dollars or what amount they want right there, then you are out of luck! I have had some very rude people that I have dealt with. I try to stay calm, but after awhile it gets rough. I even went as far as to tell one man that his actions and tone is the reason people commit suicide. I felt horrible that I stooped to their level. With the economy the way it is, it is part of the business. If you do not like the fact that people are "stealing" as one person put it, then change your job. You pick the job, the job does not pick you. Creditors must like pushing people to the limits.

  • Dealing with Nasty Debt Collectors   18 years 5 hours ago

I represent several clients who would love to pay their bills but can't. Some have lost their entire savings to unexpected medical conditions. Other's have lost a spouse and thus 50 to 100% of their income. To label these people as "dead beats" is wrong. The real criminals here are the companies that show no mercy or willingness to help. Washington Mutual for example will gladly extend you a card at a decent rate only to jump that rate to 30% if you miss three payments. Ford Credit will violate federal law and call you after 8:00 pm. I have had several clients who tried to negotiate with them only to have their vehicles repossed in the middle of the night. I have no pity for companies who add to the already mounting burden that some of these people face. How can it possibly help to triple the interest rate on a card you are already having trouble paying. Banks have no incentive to help the consumer because they know they can write the debt off, receive a tax break and federal bail out assistance. The average taxpayer receives none of these perks. My advice to debt collectors...get a real job that your mother can be proud of and stop bullying people who need help, not attitude.

  • Save More Gas by Safely Following Trucks   18 years 5 hours ago

Driving behind trucks? Wow, this is even better than drinking water to prevent cancer, especially if you are behind a Mexican truck with no brakes, wheels that come off, and stuff that flies out the back of the truck. Oh, and you get to breath in the diesel exhaust. But don't worry, just drink extra water.
