Add this to the list: ROAST THEM OVER A FIRE FOR PEEP BRULEE! better than regular marshmallows on a stick, when they roast up the outside sugar carmelizes and is awesome! these are a campfire's yummiest and simplest dessert option - just as easy as a regular marshmallow, but better!

  • 14 Tasty Cuban Recipes   15 years 18 weeks ago

LOL for me Cuban food sometimes can be expensive (grandma is a Spanish-CUban) we use "Pimenton de la Vera" (sweet smoked spanish paprika from Spain) alot for certain stuff, and cook with Morcilla, Butifarras, cured hams, smoked Spanish sausage those are very good for alot of Cuban bean stews (the Potajes). The Tasajo (salted dry beef or horse meat), Bacalao (salted cod), Pargo (red snapper) and Cherna (seabass) can get expensive. Outside of Florida Yuca, Malanga, Boniato n stuff can get pricey or getting ahold of Cachucha peppers too.

But yes over all very affordable besides the above.

  • 11 Small Ways to Save Big on Ink   15 years 18 weeks ago

PRINTERS ARE SUCH A SCAM!! First off, they are a PIA to setup....you almost always have to use the manufactures software. This software is usually a borderline virus. Then, there is the EXPENSE of cartridges...the waste in our landfills from spent cartridges. I could complain about printers all day... Here is what I do instead:

I do a lot of heavy printing. Most is in B&W, and done on my trusty mid-nineties commercial laser printer. It took less the 2 minutes to set it up...plugs right in to the good ole' fashion printer port...no software required. The thing is built like a tank...will outlast 50 ink-jets from Wal-mart. It has faithfully printed tens of thousands of pages for me...VERY,VERY CHEAPLY. ( I refill my own toner..every 3000 pages or so)

For color, I use a Cannon All in One with wireless networking. This is a very modern printer..Only took 4 hours to get it up and running...ugh!!! It is about a sturdy as a paper cup. I must admit, it does make Beautiful Color prints. Plus, there is something to be said for printing from the hammock in the backyard. I have added a Continuous Ink System to keep the cost of use down. I can bulk ink cheaper than one Cannon cartridge for this thing. I highly recommend a CIS system for any ink-jet printer.

  • 7 Ways to Improve the Life of Your Lawn Mower   15 years 18 weeks ago

I'm with you, Hunter. It's disturbing to see how quickly lawn equipment - and similar products - are being shifted to "disposable" items. My husband says they often have to turn away people who want service on equipment such as blowers, chainsaw, etc., because the service parts simply aren't available for them; the manufacturers don't expect (or want) people to repair them, just to buy another new one.
Of course, there are some brands (such as Stihl) who don't hold to this mentality; and there are better-quality machines at higher price-points. But overall, the industry is changing and it's not good, all around.

  • How to Make Moonshine   15 years 18 weeks ago

    Zorcy,
Been experimenting with the amylase stuff for the last month or so. Great stuff really, but only if you're using a pot-still and going for a flavour. Otherwise it hardly seems worthwhile converting a starch into sugar; might as well just whack a load of white sugar into the wash. The potato whiskey/ poteen is a real success though. Boiled them up and mashed them and boiled them again until they were just a thick gloop the consistency of a stiff wallpaper paste. Let them cool a bit and added a teaspoon of amylase. The following day it was a liquid again, with the starch all converted to sugar. Thing is, it was only strong enough to give an alcohol content of about between 4 and 5%. But a few kilos of sugar and a bit of malt, and I got a 15% fermentation in 5 days, with a high alcohol wine yeast, as compared to what usually takes a couple of weeks, with around a 10% yield. Flavour was spot-on too. Working on a corn whiskey now, made with polenta. Seems to be going the same; boiled to a gloop, spoonful of amylase; reverts to a sugary liquid. Have to see how this one turns out. Cheers!

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Only Buy On Sale?   15 years 18 weeks ago

I shop for quality. One of my favorite stores to shop is Eddie Bauer. Just this past weekend, I went with a 50% off coupon and a ten dollar discount coupon. I purchased one shirt, a pair of pants and a pair of shorts (equal to the value of $125) for $33! Yes, it is a deal, but the clothing is great quality and lasts forever. I still have a pair of shorts I wear all summer that I bought five years ago and they still look new!

I think Real Simple had an article about rewearing clothes. Unless you take them off right away after work, I've never had much luck wearing anything twice. Maybe a pair of pants.. . definitely jeans, a jacket, a cardigan. Not much else.

  • 10 Ways to Do Less Laundry   15 years 18 weeks ago

I have this conversation with friends all the time. I'm a night shower-er (I was raised that way), and I can't fall asleep un-showered because I feel too dirty. Most of my friends feel dirty throughout the day if they don't shower. It's all in our heads, really. But to argue in favor of night showering: how dirty do most people get while sleeping 5-8 hours in between the time you shower and get up? I figure most of us acquire our dirt while going about our daily business, and thus we wash off our grime at the end of the day.

Terrified but neccessary I am beginnng to plan for my inevitible disability as I have been able to endure 20+ years in the work force with Rheumatoid Arthritis but now am experiencing the disabling effects of 42 years of the disease and am looking at STD just to rest my body in the hopes of recovery to try again. In addition to Febreeze, my sister (who used to be a pack-a-day smoker, and has since quit, go her!) introduced me to Zero Odor (Bed Bath & Beyond reviews: http://bit.ly/fscSv7).

I was dubious at first, but my sister had a small bottle of it with her and demonstrated it for me. She had me smell her hoodie, which smelled like an ashtray, as many smokers' clothes do. She then sprayed it a few times with Zero Odor and not only did it no longer smell like cigarette smoke, it didn't smell like anything at all.

I now carry a small bottle in my purse, along with my Tide pen, to keep my clothes looking and smelling great, no matter when I encounter through the day.

  • 10 Ways to Do Less Laundry   15 years 18 weeks ago

Good stuff. I think you should also have 'Dirty Job Clothes' for when you're doing things in the garden or such that go beyond your normal yucky jobs.

The only one I really question is the showering before bed. I never feel clean all throughout the day unless I shower in the morning, plus I think the clothes would then wear faster if you're less clean overall, which would negate the effects of your sheets lasting longer.

  • 10 Ways to Do Less Laundry   15 years 18 weeks ago

Great article! I have three kids and I feel like I do way too much laundry. We've been trying to get the kids to rewear clothing (we adults already do) and use towels multiple times. I've never thought to simply wash out a stain rather than washing the whole piece of clothing!

One thing I noticed though - cold water does not set stains. Hot water will, though, with protein-based stains like blood, sweat, dirt, and feces. Hot water literally cooks the proteins, so getting the stain out after that is like trying to scrub last week's lasagna pan. With oil based stains, warm or hot water works well, but cold water will not set it. :)

  • Should a Second Marriage Be Celebrated (and Paid for) Like the First?   15 years 18 weeks ago

It isnt about not wanting to celebrate the special union its about recognizing it is a second wedding and understanding that gifts, time, money for dresses etc were all put in the first time around. I was just asked to stand up in a 2nd wedding for the 2nd time this year and I am not even 30!! They all want the showers and parties and big receptions because this time it is the right one!! People do not throw big extravegant anniversary parties every 5 years that require friends and family to buy dresses, more household items, nights out in anticipation and then the reception gift so second weddings should be handled with the same quiet care. We do want to give a nice gift with joy because you care about your friend but where is the same care when they don't think about the burden of having you spend $600 or more to get a new dress, hair, shoes, shower present, bachelorette night out, wedding present plus time for a second wedding!! Can I just wear the dress from last time? I mean I pregnant with my 3rd child and I am not having a 3rd baby shower because some of my items need to be replaced. If someone wants to purchase a gift it then becomes out of joy and not force of having to attend another over indulgent shower!!!!!
