I recently used LivingSocial for a store I have a history of using anyway. I don't think I would use it to purchase something that I had not thought about before it hit my inbox.

I use Groupon, maybe a few times a year. I only buy if I see a product or service that I use on a somewhat regular basis as the deals aren't big enough for me to be spending money new "stuff" all the time. I check the daily email and go on my way if it isn't something I am familiar with.

I use Groupon a lot: for dining, transferring old home videos to DVDs, and for experiences, such as a cruise ride around NYC!

I have used Groupon once. Its a good deal if its something you were planning on doing anyways. But if it just causes you to spend more money on unnecessary things, its a waste.

I have purchased a couple deals from Groupon but lately they haven't had anything I'm interested in. We have a local site, citydeals.com that has better offers. I've purchased food & massage deals for gifts and got a discount at a local B&B I've wanted to try, for our anniversary. I recently purchased 6 laser hair removal treatments on lower legs and arms for $99. I do have to be careful though, I find myself purchasing more than my budget will allow because I don't want to miss a good deal. I know citydeals.com is branching out to others cities, so check their site.

  • The Fallacy of Multitasking   15 years 8 weeks ago

True "multi-tasking" or at least the illusion of it can be very inefficient (especially if you're also relying on your own memory/time sense - another task to "run" along with the other tasks you're juggling) for some and in certain situations. But I do believe that doing multiple tasks simultaneously (using the gaps or down time of each) is completely doable and can be much more efficient than doing each sequentially.

I think it depends greatly on what you're doing, your own capacity for multi-tasking and how you're keeping yourself on track. So although the point of the author is valid to a degree, I think the simplicity of saying don't multi-task because it's not efficient is off. For mothers out there, almost nothing would be done if there wasn't some multi-tasking going on. I believe the bigger snags occur when we try to do too much or juggle too many tasks at once (like Barbara says). Just like our computers (which technically aren't multi-tasking, as noted), we're just switching back and forth. Some people are just better and switching back and forth (with some help from our to do list and handy reminders).

Oh as for the example, who's to say once you got your coffee in the house (on a separate trip), you don't end up knocking it to the floor yourself and spend the same amount of time "wasted" cleaning up the spilled coffee and yourself. It's not so much the act of carrying in the coffee with the baby (although hot coffees and babies don't mix anyways) that is making for inefficiencies, it's that sometimes things happen that require extra unaccounted for time (and with kids, those come up a whole lot).

I have used Groupon a couple of times, but I don't use it regualarly. Only when the deal is something I would otherwise be spending money on.

  • The Ethics of Free: Is it Wrong to Get Free Stuff?   15 years 8 weeks ago

I agree with the "intended purpose" idea. I've seen people take the FREE water at a restaurant, add FREE sugar and juice from FREE lemons, and make their own lemonade when the restaurant normally charges for lemonade. They said they don't have a problem with it, since all three of the ingredients are free. I say it is dishonest because the intent of giving away free water, sugar, and lemons is not for you to make your own lemonade.

Yes, I've bought a few groupons for local restaurants and wine bars. It's a great way to check out new restaurants that might be a little pricier than my usual fare -- there's less risk since you're getting such a deep discount. And honestly, I've yet to have a bad experience!

  • So You Want to be a Landlord? Part I   15 years 8 weeks ago

Thank you for this article I have been looking thinking about working with property auctioneers to get a building to become a landlord and begin renting for some extra cash and resources. I feel that this is some very useful information to keep in mind and I am going to bookmark this page for later!

I have not found a Groupon coupon that I was interested in and/or could afford. For example, there was a discount on laser treatments. Even with the discount, (although a good price) was not affordable for me so I skipped it. I do receive Groupon deals in my inbox. If one comes along that works for me, I would participate.

  • How to File Your First Tax Return   15 years 8 weeks ago

With the computerized tax programs available, doing your taxes for the first time need not be so scary anymore. The programs walk you through each step and offer little tutorials should you get confused. Also, they will run your numbers to see if you are better off itemizing or filing the easy form.

For anyone on the fence, give it a try! It's not as hard as you might think.

Groupon has come in handy a couple of times. I've used it for Gap and Nordstrom Rack deals. Great savings and easy to use.

  • Use Beer to Get Rid of Pests   15 years 8 weeks ago

If this works, I don't think it is the alcohol in the mouthwash that repels the insects. First you said to use the kind that doesn't kill germs, which is the type without alcohol. Secondly, even if there was alcohol, it would all evaporate in less than an hour and would certainly not be there for 20 days.
