  • 4 Steps to Absorb the Cost of an at-Home Lifestyle   15 years 9 weeks ago

We like older furniture anyway and have found great things trashpicking, at yard sales, at auctions, from family, friends and work, even in antique coops (stagnating items do get reduced, ask for a cash discount). If you gather things you really love, they hang together.

On a smaller scale. When our boys were smaller we kept on going back to plastic water glasses. After they started washing dishes we found plastic was better too. It's only recently we've switched back to glass. It would have been wiser if we didn't even try glass until they hit high school. A friend used vintage melamine dishes when her kids were small. Our thrift store "seconds" Pfalzgraff, old airline dishes, and restaurantware held up well. The pretty dishes bit the dust. And we use cloth napkins instead of paper, and clean up rags instead of paper towels.

  • Imagine Eating to Lose Weight (and Save Money)   15 years 9 weeks ago

    OMG!!
I can save 7 calories (2 M&M's) just by imagining and going through the motions of thinking about eating M&M's??!!!??

Holy Crow!!! "Sitting and Thinking" burns about 100 calories per hr. If it takes me 6 minutes of imagining to stop eating 2 M&M's -- I can easily DOUBLE my savings to $48,000 in *only* 35 years.

WOW!! Good thing a lot of thought was put into this article!!!!

Do logical fallacies burn more calories than clear thinking??
    They should.

  • 7 Frugal Lessons from Great-Grandmother   15 years 9 weeks ago

My grandmother was the most frugal person I've ever known. She and my grandfather did not have a car or a telephone. Hot water for dishes and bathing was heated at the time they wanted it. My grandmother wasted nothing. She dyed her Easter eggs using skins from red onions...she saved them as she used the onions for cooking...and the eggs were beautiful and unique. Homemade soup was a part of every dinner because it was inexpensive to make and filling. When she and my grandfather bought their first home in the 20's, they helped to pay their mortgage by taking in borders. Clothes were dried on the clothes line. My grandfather had a big garden and made his own beer in the basement. Both grandparents worked in the textile mills in Massachusetts. When they finally bought a TV in the 60's, they watched it in the dark. Why waste electricity? They walked a lot, ate simple real food and always went to bed by 9...Nana's rule! Yes, this was a different and in many ways less complicated time, but living frugally has a lot to do with mindset and the perception about what's nice and what's necessary to get through life.

I think it's worth it as long as you are vigilant about only buying deals you can really use. We've bought restaurant deals, toy stores and zoo passes - things we'll make a point of using. I also only let myself have 2 unused restaurant vouchers at any given time - it's a weird personal rule, but it keeps me from buying too many and letting then to go waste.

  • The Fallacy of Multitasking   15 years 9 weeks ago

Some years ago I landed a job in a retiree benefits call center. I was 42, just graduated with a BS in finance and was told at my new job I should be doing two things at once, for example, I should be able to address an envelope while listening to the caller. I quickly discovered that if I did anything other than stack papers while on the phone, I was not able to pay attention to the details of the call in order to assist the caller. Sure, maybe others could write addresses out by hand while capturing enough details to help, but I wasn't one of them. I did a great job of helping the callers and I did a great job of addressing envelopes and other routine functions, but not at the same time. I don't apologize for it anymore. It's just the way I am. BUT I was not easily distracted and can till this day pay very close attention to my work at hand, tuning out everything around me.

I subscribe to groupon's emails, but haven't bought anything yet. The nearest groupon city is 1.5 hours away, so the drive time severely limits my enthusiasm to get a great deal.

  • Remove Car Dents Quickly and Cheaply   15 years 9 weeks ago

The instructions for the hair dryer have the air duster being held upside down. In your video, it doesn't work but he isn't holding it upside down...
so I'm not really sure he is proving much (other than he isn't great at following instructions). :)

I know a lot of people love the writing style. It varies regionally, and in my area, I think it's pretty awful. They try waaaaayyyy too hard to be cute, and often this keeps me from figuring out what the business of the day actually does. If I can't figure it out in a couple of sentences, I'm not going to spend any money on it. Even with businesses I'm familiar with, sometimes I can't tell what the discounted service or product is. So no, I don't use Groupon.

I love Groupon ! But after a few crazy buys, I now try to be more mindful of my Groupon purchases. My best buy was a month of yoga at Purple Yoga. I liked it so much, that I became a member of the studio. Now I can't imagine my life without this yoga practice.

yes i do use them but with caution. they can be very useful to explore places/services that you would otherwise not have gone to, but they can also cause overspending very easily.

I am a huge fan of Groupon and Living Social. I bought six cleaning sessions from two different vendors through Living Social and saved nearly 50% off the cost. So far I've been pleased with their work. The best part of all of these sites is the credit you can earn from referrals. I recently purchased two items completely for free because of them.

  • McMansion to McCottage: Why Smaller Houses Are Smarter   15 years 9 weeks ago

I agree that small homes are generally great, but trust me, small homes don't always encourage good design! Good architects encourage good design!

I have used it for a couple purchases already.

  • The Best Frugal Office Party Foods   15 years 9 weeks ago

Deviled eggs are easy & quick if you buy the bag of shelled hard-boiled eggs. Just slice, remove the yolks & make up the filling, re-stuff the halves. I found a decent egg tray at the 99cent store - bought 2, & use one for the lid.

Easy chocolate frosting (my family uses it on angel food cake) is whipped cream with some powdered sugar & about 5T chocolate powder. Mix all ingredients & let them sit awhile, then whip it up.

Our office does the potato bar, salad bar, sandwich bar, taco bar type potlucks.

I'm not familiar with that commercial. It's definitely a good risk reward, and maybe more than trying to get people to play, we can all see what our risk tolerance is.

  • How to File Your First Tax Return   15 years 9 weeks ago

That's right when I started doing my own taxes - I think. I can't remember if my Dad did them when I was in college, but I know for certain that when I had my first real job, I just busted out the Turbotax and did them myself for years. It's a pretty basic interview process for fresh workers without crazy tax situations - real simple!

I've bought from Groupon and several other similar sites. I've not had an issue yet *knock wood* and I've gotten some great deals.
