  • 4 Benefits to Wearing a Pedometer at Home   15 years 20 weeks ago

I have an Omron HJ-112 Premium Pedometer that I love. It does calories, and lets you set your stride length. (Disclosure: I received it from Walmart as part of a campaign on another blog I did for them, but after buying quite a few very cheap ones and having them break, I think I'd buy this one myself if given the choice.) Anyone else have a pedometer they like?

  • Ask the Readers: What's the Biggest Item in Your Budget?   15 years 20 weeks ago

Our biggest expense at this moment is private schooling, at about $20,000+/yr. We are grateful that we can afford it, but are seriously looking forward to the day when this expense goes away (not that we want to rush these years but SHEESH!).

  • Which is Cheaper: Flying or Driving?   15 years 20 weeks ago

There's definitely a lot of points where personal preference makes a big difference. My reaction tends to be "fly just from there to there? WHY?" for anything short of halfway across the continental US. Then again, I love driving and have considered a career as a long-haul trucker, so your mileage may vary.

  • Would imminent diarrhea beat a speeding ticket? Deadline extended.   15 years 20 weeks ago

Not in the running for the comp, but I just have to share this one.......

A mature (!) aged lady gets pulled over for speeding.

Older Woman: Is there a problem, Officer?
    Officer: Ma'am, you were speeding.

    Older Woman: Oh, I see.
Officer: Can I see your license please?

Older Woman: I'd give it to you but I don't have one.
    Officer: Don't have one?

Older Woman: Lost it, 4 years ago for drunk driving.
Officer: I see...Can I see your vehicle registration papers please.

Older Woman: I can't do that.
    Officer: Why not?

Older Woman: I stole this car.
    Officer: Stole it?

Older Woman: Yes, and I killed and hacked up the owner.
    Officer: You what?

Older Woman: His body parts are in plastic bags in the trunk if you want to see.

The Officer looks at the woman and slowly backs away to his car and calls for back up. Within minutes 5 police cars circle the car. A senior officer slowly approaches the car, clasping his half drawn gun.

Officer 2: Ma'am, could you step out of your vehicle please! The woman steps out of her vehicle.
Older woman: Is there a problem sir?

Officer 2: One of my officers told me that you have stolen this car and murdered the owner.
    Older Woman: Murdered the owner?

Officer 2: Yes, could you please open the trunk of your car, please.
The woman opens the trunk, revealing nothing but an empty trunk.

Officer 2: Is this your car, ma'am?
Older Woman: Yes, here are the registration papers.
    The officer is quite stunned.

Officer 2: One of my officers claims that you do not have a driving license.
The woman digs into her handbag and pulls out a clutch purse and hands it to the officer.

The officer examines the license. He looks quite puzzled.
Officer 2: Thank you ma'am, one of my officers told me you didn't have a license, that you stole this car, and that you murdered and hacked up the owner.

Older Woman: Bet the liar told you I was speeding, too.

  • 4 Benefits to Wearing a Pedometer at Home   15 years 20 weeks ago

What a coincidence! My friends keep raving about their pedometers and how it's helping on their diets. Their daily step count has become a game where they try to do better than each other when we have lunch. "I had a 12,000 step day this week!" "Only up to 6,000 today."

Off to amazon to shop for one.... anyone have tips about particular models or features?

Our mortgage is the biggest expense in our finances right now. Gotta love California home prices!

  • The cost of a free ride - why not to use a buyer's agent   15 years 20 weeks ago

As I stated in another post,, most agents do not understand agency law. Your statement that the agent's primary fiduciary duty is still to the seller is simply not correct. Dual agency by definition means the agents can not advise either party. To do so is illegal in any state.

  • The cost of a free ride - why not to use a buyer's agent   15 years 20 weeks ago

I did not read this whole post because it started out with a huge fallacy. Dual agency DOES NOT get you representation. It gets NEITHER side representation. Both the buyer and seller are on their own with regards to "advice". The agent becomes a paper pusher and it is ILLEGAL for the agent to give any kind of advice to either party. If they did, it was against the law. I didn't finish the article because after you made that statement, it put the credibility of everything else you said in question. It's not surprising that you did jot understand what was going on, because frankly, many agents do not either.

I was a Real Estate agent and taught agency law for years. I know whereof I speak.

Since I live in one of the most expensive urban areas, housing is definitely the biggest budget line item.

Right now it's travel, i.e., I have decided to travel as much as I can and am making it a priority. It's FRUGAL travel, of course (frequent flier tickets, a couple of buddy passes, house-sitting, not renting cars, and staying with family and friends) but it does add up. That means being careful about where else I spend, and don't spend. I am fortunate to be able to take my work along with me (I'm a freelance writer) so I have decided to travel until I can't.
P.S. At home I eat a lot of pinto beans, and I haven't bought any new clothes since my daughter's wedding almost three years ago (except for shoes, thrift-store jeans and a thrift-store coat to replace my 25-year-old jacket). Totally OK with that trade-off.

Ours is taxes by a landslide, followed by insurance (medical, dental, life, car, & house), followed by the mortgage.

  • 5 One-Size-Fits-All Spending Tips That Don’t Really Fit Everyone   15 years 20 weeks ago

Thanks for your comment, Nate. My message wasn't to say that there is no merit in cutting out coffee, for example, and stashing the savings away for rainy day. This is obviously one of the only ways to increase your bottom line: you either earn more or spend less. My irritation is with the "bandwagons" that have become so popular these days. "Let's not go out to eat for 90 days" "Put your credit cards on ice and never use them" "Skip the gym membership, you don't need it." When financial experts make a call to their large followings with such a narrow action item, it can do one of several things:
    1) It can cause disruption to the industry being "boycotted" -- as a restaurant worker, I'd be really peeved if someone with millions of fans requested that eating out be banned 100%
    2) It assumes that people are buying these things in the first place.. I have no coffee place near me, so suggesting that I can save money by cutting this purchase out is erroneous
    3) It doesn't teach people to prioritize -- truly. Each person's priorities will be so varied, that it does a better service to them to teach them how to sit down, look at their spending, and see where the cuts can be made in the most effective manner.

I don't discount that cutting coffee may be a great idea for a percentage of the population, and the theory behind it is sound (or wine, or cigarettes, etc.) You have grasped the concept perfectly, so for you, it would work. Others who need a bit more of the personal finance reasoning behind it, however, may not find it as useful.

    Again, I appreciate your response!

  • Best Money Tips: Lower-Calorie Super Bowl Snacks   15 years 20 weeks ago

I like thick crust, too! I like all crusts of all sizes, everywhere. I think the best part of most crusted foods (pies, pizzas, etc.) is the crust.

Not a big fan of olives, though. I usually trade them with my mom: my olives for her onions. We make it work. =)

  • You're Doing It Wrong, Moron: 5 Tips for Giving Better Compliments   15 years 20 weeks ago

I agree that being very specific when giving compliment is beneficial. This approach works for at least a few reasons: it shows that you are being sincere and not currying favor, it shows that you notice details, and it reinforces positive attributes that you may want to encourage.
