City person to country person, my interest is piqued. We're moving from the Bay Area to the wine country in a month. One and a half hours but worlds away in some senses. I can't wait for the huge garden and horses and stars. Organizing becomes even more important... I'll be trying out Sandy

  • Making Your Own Luck is No "Secret"   18 years 17 weeks ago

Luck is label we place on some event or impact; in the case where it's positive, it's "good" luck. I don't believe anyone can argue we are what we eat, and the same holds true for those things which occur in our lives. Granted, something unfortunate can occur, like a rock falling from the sky and hitting you on the head, but that is certainly a random event based on the pure physics of the universe. That rock may have been jettisoned from the Kyper Belt some billions of miles out a million years ago; and it's now just hitting the planet because it, and you are in the way.

We create much of our reality. This is a fact. We consider winning the lottery lucky, but a lottery is random. We only can win if we put ourself in the position of winning; just as with life.

    2-4-6-8 it's great to diversificate!

  • Making Your Own Luck is No "Secret"   18 years 17 weeks ago

The exact same thing happened to a friend of mine. I didn't know she had done this until she said it in her wedding vows.

I, on the other hand, was the one agonizing over a list of pros and cons over my future husband. Ten years later, I'm glad I didn't let the long list of cons sway me! A lot of those things, he has grown out of -- we were after all only 22 at the time. The "cons" that he still has, either I have learned to ignore or they are just worth it.

  • Cheap and Romantic Ideas for Valentine's Day (And Any Other Day of the Year)   18 years 17 weeks ago

From experience, showering with a friend is only fun if both bathers are relatively similar in height. As a short woman with a tall husband, all I get out of the deal is a face full of water. Any ideas for how to make this activity fun for the short person? (My husband loves co-showering, but he's not the one nearly drowning each time we do it.) :-)

  • Tips for Perimeter Perusing at Target   18 years 17 weeks ago

Mhhm, the Target "employee" that claims we have secret sales... are wrong. Those are just simply items that have had a price cut that was missed when putting up price accuracy labels. And a discount for a damaged box doesn't happen. There has to be damage to the actual contents to get a discount. Also it is a complete and utter lie that prices are changed at Noon, prices are changed late at night when our registers get updated. As far as clearance markdowns, it varies by district and items can be marked down any day. Most stores have a 4am process for price change teams, or the overnight team for larger volume stores.

$100K from websites? Now, that's impressive! Out of curiosity, where does the bulk of the income come from - adsense and related advertising or do you sell products? Inquiring minds want to know :)

I have never watched this show, but will consider it again if I should come across it (I rarely have time now to watch tv)

  • Buy Baby Bunting... But don't pay full price!   18 years 17 weeks ago

I'm with you on most of your ideas.  I also advocate breastfeeding if at all possible.  I have done nursing with supplemental feeding by formula when I had to.

I would have LOVED to do cloth diapers, but unfortunately, it would have put a burden on our already maxed-out ancient septic system.  Many times we didn't even have a working washer or drying with my children, and as much as I would have liked to try it, it just didn't work out.

I have tried the gDiaper thing, though.  They worked alright (but still were tough on our taxed out plumbing.)

Thanks for sharing your tips.  We will be focusing on more baby care topics in the next month or so!

I started one website about 8 years ago, added another about 3 years ago, and now I'm up to about 10 websites that I built and manage by myself. I made a little over $100k last year from the sites - not bad for a hobby!

  • Making Your Own Luck is No "Secret"   18 years 17 weeks ago

I loved this post!! Too often we hear about what happens TO people. And it's usually not people who will MAKE things happen for themselves! Hooray for personal accountability and taking the reins in your own life!!

Thanks for a good post. Needless to say, I couldn't agree more. It's harder to be responsible, but people will never learn to be responsible if it's not what's expected of them.

  • The Key To Making Money Online? Diversification, Baby!   18 years 17 weeks ago

When one stream of income ends, you'll need another to replace it so it definitely pays to be on the continuous lookout for new clients, etc. And of course, the resources I mentioned are nowhere close to a complete list so the more ideas you can come up, the better off your bottom line will be...

I'm glad everyone liked this one -

Cullyp: I don't have a similar post in a list format, but that's a good idea... let's see how many resources I can find to make money online... keep watching for the list :)

  • The Key To Making Money Online? Diversification, Baby!   18 years 17 weeks ago

I think there's a constant tension when thinking about adding additional sources of income, because it's almost always more remunerative to pick the "best" source of income and focus all your efforts there. Even places where additional effort doesn't result directly in extra income (a salaried job, for example), it's probably the case that extra effort will produce more job security and larger raises--and that the total income will be greater than spending the same amount of time and effort on sources of "extra" income.

Having said that, I think diversifying income sources is a great idea, and I hope more people follow your advice. Focusing entirely on the "best" income source is a high-risk strategy that often pays off during good times, but in bad times, a diverse set of income sources can save a household all manner of difficulty.

It's best if people think through what they're doing, though. Otherwise, a simple-minded looking at the numbers can leave them disappointed with the results of their diversification efforts.

  • The Key To Making Money Online? Diversification, Baby!   18 years 17 weeks ago

You sound very much like me in my business plan.  I never thought of myself as diversified, until now!  I also agree with Cathering is that you will need to spend a bit of time looking for new jobs, clients, etc.  I factor this time in when I determine what kind of hourly rate I need to be profitable.

    Thanks for sharing!

  • Buy Baby Bunting... But don't pay full price!   18 years 17 weeks ago

I'm late to the party on this -- I just found the site last week via Lifehacker -- but I'm surprised that cloth diapering isn't mentioned here. I cloth diapered my son and am switching my 3-week old daughter to cloth now that her bellybutton has healed. Cloth diapering is incredibly frugal, especially if you have more than one child, and there are diaper services out there that will take care of the dirty work for you at a much lower cost than disposables. I wash my own, however, to minimize the environmental impact.

Also, and I think this goes without saying, breastfeeding is not only good for babies and moms, it's good for the environment and the pocketbook. Even off-brand formula is $15/can, and if you invest in a good breast pump (i.e. Medela's Pump in Style, $250) it's even possible to "breastfeed" your baby while you return to work. My friend gave her son expressed milk exclusively by pumping until he was eight months old, saving herself hundreds of dollars in formula. Not everyone is able to keep it up that long, but even nursing for the first six weeks will save a family a substantial amount of money.

I used a lot of these suggestions with my first child, and can attest to their effectiveness -- making your own baby food, for instance, is awesome. I would add to that, don't buy a freestanding highchair when a smaller one that straps to a kitchen chair will do -- and save space for those who (like us) have downsized to save $$ even as our family has grown!

The last thing I would suggest is to invest in a convertible car seat that takes your child from infancy straight through grade school. As child seat laws grow more stringent, parents are having to spend more and more on booster seats -- my state, for one, requires boosters for kids up to 80 lbs. Our son's seat converts to a booster that will take him all the way up to 100 lbs, so even if the laws change we will be covered. Now the only question is...will he let his sister use it when the time comes?

  • Making Your Own Luck is No "Secret"   18 years 17 weeks ago

I believe that luck comes to those with plans and faith that those plans will come to fruition. You can't sit in your house and wish a great new job into existence. But you also can't get what you don't think you deserve.

  • Making Your Own Luck is No "Secret"   18 years 17 weeks ago

A friend once talked me into actually writing down on a paper all the qualities that I would like to have in my spouse. I was single then. The friend argued that if I write it down, I'll get a spouse who will HAVE all of those qualities.
I didn't believe him, but I did write them on a piece of paper.
Sure enough!!! Within a couple of months I met my husband, and he DOES have all the qualities that I jotted down on that paper. I even showed it to him, after we got engaged. The reason behind this still remains a mystery but I still think that writing it down on a paper did have something to do with it.

  • Making Your Own Luck is No "Secret"   18 years 17 weeks ago

Yes, there are times that "gifts" simply fall into your lap. However, usually "luck" is a windfall from careful planning or persistance. Here's an example: When I was in college, I was as poor as most students. In wasting some time on the internet between classes one day, I stumbled upon a website that offered a sweepstakes to pay your rent for one month. It was a website for apartment-hunting (no, I don't remember the name, so please don't contact me asking me what it was), but they offered an opportunity to enter daily to have your rent paid. There was a monthly drawing with one winner each month. Guess what I did? I entered every day. Every single day. It took about 30 seconds of my time and since I was a student, I was on the computer at least once a day anyway, so it was no real struggle for me. I entered every day for 3 years (the first year I was living in the dorm with rent paid via scholarship). Guess what? I won. Twice. Two wins over 1068 days of entries doesn't seem too lucky (I have no idea how many people entered this thing), but on those two days I was notified, I felt like the luckiest person on earth. And my roommates loved me for it too! =) It's often all relative.

  • Making Your Own Luck is No "Secret"   18 years 17 weeks ago

Everything is relative. You say we (i.e. educated Americans) are born with a handful of lottery tickets. That's true, if the lottery is in, say, a third world country; but not if, say, the lottery is in New York City or LA or much of the US.

If you can tolerate a lower standard of living and survive a less healthy environment, you can take those lottery tickets to a depressed environment and cash them in. Kind of like currency trading.

But if you want to stay in the same country, near the same amount of urbanity and culture, etc., then your lottery tickets won't be worth quite as much.
