I need a new laptop and want to get the Samsung Chromebook really bad. I have a quality desktop at home. My only reservation is its compatibility with downloads etc. Maybe they will fix these issues with updates?

Nope, I don't pay for cable and haven't since 2006. My family and I are just 'too busy' to watch tv. We do have a television and receive 4 decent channels via OTA. We also have a VHS and a DVD player for popcorn and movie nights or those rainy days. I can also stream tv shows or movies via hulu and the like. My laptop has an HDMI port that we can connect to the tv.
The last two options available to us are quite recent, since late 2009. I was a full time student when we moved and just couldn't justify the $50/month expense just for basic cable. I'd rather be able to pay my rent and put food on the table. Now that I'm no longer a student and have a real job, even tho I'm still not raking in the big bucks, doing without cable tv seems normal.
We've lived without it for so long, I see absolutely no reason to pick it up again.
Yes, we pay for cable TV. There really are only a few channels we watch, so it would be great if we just had to pay for them ;) But there are certain shows that we follow enthusiastically, and it's nice to sit down together and watch them in real time.

But realistically watching TV saves me a lot of money, i dont go out and do a lot, instead im glued to NatGeo and Discovery. ANd the hubby is a big football fan, better for him to watch it at home than at a bar where he always spends too much money.
I am astonished by the level of judgement and miserly attitude of most of the people posting here. You have no way of knowing how long a marriage will last- first or second. If you are too cheap to buy a second gift, then don't attend the wedding. If the bride and groom knew what selfish jerks you were anyway, they would probably revolk your invitation anyway. I just attends a second wedding and felt the couple made it so low-key that they shouldn't have bothered. Getting married is a big deal and no one anticipates getting divorced. I didn't get a baby shower when my daughter was born because everyone though it was a second child, so I didn't need one. The problem was I had a boy, 14 years earlier, so we had to buy everything and I didn't even get so much as a diaperpail from co-workers, even though I had gone to numerous showers for them.
(1) Cathedral ceilings actually save money in hot climates, as hot air rises up and cool air stays down.
(2) "A house shoudl not be a substitute for outdoor life." May work in San Francisco, San Diego, or even Seattle, but in a Texas or Florida summer? In a Minnesota winter? Get real. Like the Beltway denizens condemning Texans and Floridans for not walking everywhere (try it in July in Houston :-()

A lot of the shows that I like to watch are directly linked off of the websites. I find that not having access to the tv allows me to pick specific shows that I want to want as opposed to brainlessly surfing like I used to.
Gave up Direct tv 3 months ago and can honestly say I do not miss forking out 100 bucks a month for the service. I find that now I have plenty of shows to watch that broadcast over the internet, netflix and antenna tv. You do not have to pay lots of money for tv but people are lazy and just want a little box with remote and be able to dvr their programs instead of waiting the next day or till the season is available. Instant gratification equals outrageous cable bill..I love having my 100 bucks a month back....
To avoid going into debt is a pretty bad reason to raid your 401(k). If your business fails you can always declare bankruptcy - bankruptcy can't touch most 401(k)'s - you'll still have your retirement savings...roll it over into the business instead, have it fail...and you'll have nothing.

No cable for us. We have a box with an antenna. When I want to watch a movie, I turn to the internet on hulu. I don't mind watching old flicks. When my husband wants to watch a movie, he goes on down to get a Red Box flick. For sports, if my husband's favorite team is not on the basic channels, he goes to a sports bar to watch. Youtube is great for the kids. You can find any old cartoon on there, but I do watch the content.

I'm a type ii diabetic that was diagnosed when I'd lost too much weight. I am at my ideal weight right now and losing more wouldn't accomplish anymore than what I'm doing now. Not all diabetics are over weight. Please stop thinking that. We have a gal at work who is clearly obese and she is not a diabetic.

I am a young, newly married person, and have been out of my parents home for three years now. My parents always paid for some sort of television throughout my life. When I first moved out and moved in with my husband, there was no way we could afford to pay for any type of television, so we survived on the bunny ears, borrowing movies and TV show seasons from the library, and watching some episodes of shows from websites. A year later, we discovered Netflix! The instant streaming is great, I get to watch what I want, whenever I want, with no commercials! I am completely happy with the set up we have, I will never ever want to pay for TV! There are too many other things that are more important to spend (or save!) that money on.
I don't mind paying for cable. Everyone has their own frugal "comfort zone". For me, being frugal means choosing wisely for myself, what to spend my money on.We have movie night at home, have movie food (hot dogs, popcorn, and chocolate), and snuggle.
We cut back in other areas...cook from scratch, seldom eat out, buy staples in bulk after comparing prices, consolidate trips to save gas, adjust thermostat to just comfortable, purchase clothing and other goods at thrift store. I just bought my son a designer white dress shirt and black designer dress shoes for total $12, both look like they were never worn. I make our laundry detergent for pennies and line dry clothes whenever possible.
I choose where my hard-earned dollars go and make sure I'm getting the most value for them when they do. It's not that hard to do. Saving money becomes a habit. We live a pretty good life. We have everything we need and a good deal of what we want.
BTW, we will be completely debt-free in about 7 years, including our 100K mortgage.
One more thing to note. For photographers, for example, desktops always are more capable of doing the right thing right. Leaving aside the more-or-less powerful processing capacity, notebooks always have inferior screens that are a must0have thing for a real photog.
