No cable for me - I watch all my shows online! It's a bit slower sometimes, but it saves a ton of money. :)

It must be nice to not be connected 24/7! I think that would be a huge plus for me although I probably would go through withdrawals at first.

I agree, it would be tough but it's definitely doable!

No , recently discontinued it to save money. The only thing I really miss is the weather channel, not worth the $50 a month. Spend more time on netflix anyway.....

I have not had cable for over two years now. I purchased an application called PlayOn and an XBox 360. The application sits on my PC and streams TV directly from the Internet to the XBox. From there to the television. I can also stream music stored on my PC via the same route and outputs to my stereo. This setup has already paid for itself many times over. I do not get live events or local channels but there is certainly more television available than I could ever watch. If I ever want local or live events I could simply hang a digital antenna atop my house.

  • How much money should a CEO make?   15 years 1 week ago

I also am a capitalist. I agree that companies should pay their CEOs what they want. However, capitalism still requires common and economic sense. We are in the worse economy in over 50 years. Many people do not have jobs, lost their savings or investments (as I have, try bank stock at 0.63 per share and a bank CEO making $390,000 per year) for a small bank. These companies could run literally without the CEOs. Progress energy is breaking people's backs now with security deposits (to home owners) while the CEO earns $4.2 million per year. I do not have to buy a Honda, or Microsoft products, but I do have to buy electricity. Truth is we live in a greedy world with PAC money paying politicians to look after the rich and taking our tax money to buy votes from the poor. How can anyone justify making in the millions per year? How many homes can a person live in, or how many pairs of shoes does one need?

Yes, but I wish we didn't.

  • My One Favorite Frugal Living Tip   15 years 1 week ago

Amen! You are right on the mark! I've seen a lot of people give up too fast and too easily thinking it's just a bunch of bunk or that they aren't cut out for it. Or worse, that they already are doing their best at frugality when they know in their hearts they aren't. Like anything else, frugality is a habit and it takes time to develop the frugal habits that work best for you! Great post! Thanks for saying it and saying it so well!

Bechego -- I am aware of (and none too happy about) how photos of many models are edited. It's awful! However, I do still think it's an apt comparison. A woman is not likely to get on the cover of Shape (or a similar fitness magazine) if she doesn't have a certain level of fitness and put a certain amount of work towards it.

I had Comcast until I bought an HD tv. Their HD sucked and I moved to an antenna. After conversion it made sense to put up outdoor antenna which with a little internet research and $200 bucks on antenna and supplies. Learned how to make my own cable wire and save big bucks, its been two years. My next door neighbor gave his Netflix account so I still don't pay and have all the entertainment I need. The only thing I pay for is internet and every couple of months Comcast calls for some deal and I politely turned them down saying OTA had better quality picture than you. LOL

THANK YOU! Gosh it's about time someone just put it out there like that. All it really takes is a little effort. Just putting that much in every single day gets you closer to the goals you want whether it's being frugal or lose weight. Everyone has the power to take charge of their situation.

  • Secret Lawn Tonic Recipe From Golf Course Groundskeeper   15 years 1 week ago

I just tried this the other day and we had a downpour and rain on and off for the past 2 days. I'm afraid the first application is too diluted at this point to have any affect. What do you think? Should I reapply, or am I going to damage the lawn by "over-tonic-ing"?

  • 5 Tips for Remembering Names   15 years 1 week ago

Your tips for remembering names is great. I'm really good at recognizing faces, but I don't remember names very well at all.

My biggest difficulty, though, is not trusting myself. Sometimes, even when I think I remember someone's name, I don't use it becuase my memory is faulty enough I'm worried I'll be wrong. "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt."

    Any suggestions for that?

  • How to Buy Like a Pro at Country Auctions   15 years 1 week ago

I grew up in rural New England, and when I was in high school, my mom took me to an auction of old theater items -- vintage clothes, big rubber monster masks, etc. We got some amazing costumes for cheap, and the experience of attending the auction is one of my favorite memories.

  • Ask The Readers: Do You Pay For Cable TV?   15 years 1 week ago

Yes -- we have a basic internet/cable package. I could care less about television, but my husband loves being able to watch his Phillies games. We know that, if we had to, we could live without this expense.

  • Ask The Readers: Do You Pay For Cable TV?   15 years 1 week ago

My husband and I live a very busy lifestyle, so subscribing to (and paying for) cable seemed like a waste of our hard-earned money. Instead, we use a Netflix subscription and watch what we want, when we want to, from our Wii console. If we're inclined to watch cable programming, we will connect our laptop computer to our television (which I find to be the smartest creation in the world!) and stream from our internet!

Talk about getting the biggest bang for your buck! :-)
