You forgot El Salvador! US currency means that there is no beneficial exchange rate but it also means inflation is very low and prices dont jerk up and down.

  • Ask The Readers: Do You Pay For Cable TV?   15 years 1 week ago

No we go with Free HD over air, netflix on PS3 / computers / smartphones, and hulu+ (also on PS3, computers, and smartphones)

  • Ask The Readers: Do You Pay For Cable TV?   15 years 1 week ago

We do currently pay for cable tv and are locked into a 2 year contract with Directv. I think that when it ends we might do Netflix or basic cable, because it is just to expensive!

  • Ask The Readers: Do You Pay For Cable TV?   15 years 1 week ago

Nope. My wife and I don't pay for cable. In our old house, we paid for the most basic tier (basically just the broadcast channels plus a few extra) but the tv was in a basement "rec" room, and we found we never even bothered to watch it. When we moved, we decided to pay for high speed internet via FIOS for $60/month. We download and/or watch all our favorite shows, have the basic streaming Netflix for the Wii and our computers ($8/month) and Ooma phone service ($3/month). One of these days I might put up a digital antenna, but we're not in any rush. Take that, cable!

  • Where to Find Free or Cheap Yoga Classes   15 years 1 week ago

    - Check with your local parks and rec department. My city has free classes going on at several parks this summer.

    - Look into online classes — YogaToday.com is like the Netflix of yoga. They have a free class each week for all levels and you can buy individual classes or subscribe to streaming access for hundreds of other classes.

  • Ask The Readers: Do You Pay For Cable TV?   15 years 1 week ago

No cable. I use Hulu for most of my fav tv shows. I did a Netflix trial for a month. I liked it, but didn't want to pay for it. I have rabbit ears, but usually leave it on one channel since I have to adjust the antennae with I change channels.

  • 25 Healthy Changes You Can Make Today   15 years 2 weeks ago

    Great post - thanks!

If you don't like the fishy aftereffects of fish oil, you can get the "odorless" type at Trader Joe's, the downside is that it is a bit more expensive - and we are on a frugal website, right? A less expensive and vegetarian alternative to get your omegas is flaxseed oil - right next to the fish oil at Trader Joe's and about three dollars less per bottle with no fishy effects! Or, if you can eat enough of them, buy whole flaxseeds in the bulk sections (Henry's/Sprouts are surprisingly cheap, and SmartCo is beginning to carry bulk items, too). Just make sure to grind them before using, otherwise they are difficult to digest. I like to sprinkle about 3T in my whole wheat bread dough for a little extra boost to an already very healthy loaf.

Meg, you talk about the women in Shape magazine as if they are actually really and truly that skinny, and then you make it sound as if you have to kill your body to get there. I recommend you do a YouTube search under photoshop girls to see how fake these so called skinny women are and how much pressure they put on the young girls of today.

  • How to Start a Business With Your 401(k)   15 years 2 weeks ago

This article has more actionable advice than any I've ever seen on Wise Bread. (I wish I'd written it.) I'd recommend starting with a CPA instead of an attorney, though.

And while history books are indeed written by the winners, I have yet to meet the restaurant owner/operator who says, "You know what? This isn't for me. I wish I was still waiting tables at the Olive Garden."

  • DIY Shampoo: The Baking Soda Experiment   15 years 2 weeks ago

i do the baking soda and vinegar and agree on the dullness, however depending on your hair color, you can make a wash with certain fruits for that shine you miss. i condition with avacado or olive oil in a shower cap once every 2 weeks or so. i have naturally jet black hair so i rinse it with blackberries on the weeks i don't deep condition. it really brings out the shine. and after your hair is dried, you can rub some carrot oil or almond oil or mint oil in it to add shine and get the vinegar smell out and if you just get your hands a little oily and gently tossle it in, it won't get bogged down! if i can find the site with the fruit combos for hair colors i will have to post it.

  • Ask The Readers: Do You Pay For Cable TV?   15 years 2 weeks ago

While we do not pay for cable TV, I mean that in the spectrum in that because we live in a Rural area, Cable TV is not an option.

So instead, we have a packaged bundle with Verizon where they have a joint program with DirectTV and we use Satelline. I think it is a good buy.

  • 10 Ways to Save Time With Batch Processing   15 years 2 weeks ago

Most people probably do this with showering--also washing hair, conditioning hair, shaving, drying off, combing hair, applying sunscreen or lotion, and checking whether nails need trimming.

Most people probably do this with grooming--brush teeth, floss, wash face, brush hair, put on hand lotion/lip balm. I also put on earrings in the bathroom. I also do squats and calf raise while brushing my teeth.

And most people do it with shopping - buy the stuff, bring it in, put it away, take care of the bags. This is also a good time, if relevant, to file receipts and warranty information and to add the item to your household inventory if you have one.

Dishes - put away clean dishes, wash dirty dishes, clean the counters and stove top, sweep the floor.

Garbage - empty all the small garbage cans into the kitchen garbage, take out the kitchen garbage, replace the garbage bags.

Workday food - While waiting for breakfast to cook, get lunch ready and pack it up.

I mostly pay bills as they come in, but I pick a day near the end of the month to make sure I've gotten everything paid.

Savings - After I get paid, at the beginning of the month, I balance my checkbook and do a similar thing for my credit card (in another column in my checkbook). Then I enter in all the automated deductions for the month. Then I decide how much extra I can afford to move into savings and do that. Then I look up how much is in my savings accounts (after earning interest and making any deposits) and how much my mutual funds are worth. Then I calculate my net worth and how much I have in each of various savings categories (vacations/electronics, next car, etc.)

Occasionally I will decide all of my work outfits at the beginning of the week.

Lots of great tips. A cheaper option for weed control is using mulch a.k.a. grass clippings. After you mow your lawn, just spread the grass clippings a couple inches deep around your plants. It will not only inhibit weed growth, it will also enrich the soil by composting the dead plant material. I'd only advise this if you don't use any kind of weed control treatments on your lawn, though.

  • 5 Things Other Grocery Stores Should Steal from Trader Joe's   15 years 2 weeks ago

Its hard not like the quality/price proposition TJ offers. But I wish they would locate closer to downtown cleveland instead of 15 miles into the Suburbs. I include them in a trip when I pollute the air driving out there. And as zip codes are tracked at the register, they know folks are commuting from the urban center to get those speciality items that no one else sells affordably. So TJ, if you are into this triple-bottom line sustainability stuff, how about opening a store in the city? Don't tell me you don't have enough customer base to draw from.

By the way, I work in Neighborhood development and spend a lot of time studying how to build or maintain urban neighborhoods, good food is a real key element. Frankly, if TJ's isn't willing to create more urban stores, perhaps ALDI - The german retailer might be willing to spin out smaller versions of their quality retail concept.

Come on TJs... even though you use Pepsi Co and Kraft as suppliers I still want to think you guys are cool and sort of care about the regions you derive your profits from... Paul Raymond - Slavic Village Development, Cleveland OH

Great article. For many years I couldn't figure out what my problem is and the soil conditioning was the main culprit. I compost now and it's starting to come around.

Crushed eggshells work great for slugs. Just sprinkle them around your plants and the slugs can't get over them.

So true. I've found a physical paper notebook works best for me, in spite of all the technological options out there. Somehow adding/subtracting numbers with a pen makes the saving/spending impact feel real. Sort of the difference between paying with cash and swiping a card.
