  • Extreme Couponing? 5 Reasons Why I’ll Pass.   15 years 2 weeks ago

This super-couponing thing comes round ever recession. Each time, the people who do it say they enjoy couponing. I think it's more of a cost-free or money-saving hobby than anything else. You have to be into knowing the local market and knowing how to make it happen.

Couponers are not hoarders. I know hoarders. They don't really coupon. They just hoard. Either they hoard junk, or they hoard good stuff, but their problem is that they have a hard time giving things away. It has nothing to do with acquisition, and a lot to do with avoiding waste or losing things.

As far as comparing the labor cost of couponing to working - it is only valid if you could work instead of couponing. AFAIK, for most people, it's pretty difficult to line up an easy gig that pays $25 an hour for only two or three hours a week. Casual, less skilled work like gardening or housekeeping pay less. Skilled work pays a more, but, by definition, that's not for the average person.

When we bought a computer it had an option for an addiitonal $100.00 to learn Excel, this was many years ago and the husband thought it was a good idea. I am sad to say we purchased it and never logged it to learn.

  • Feeling Stuck? 100 Ways to Change Your Life   15 years 2 weeks ago

    Thank you so much, Nora!

I've been struggling with depression, social anxiety, body dysmorphic disorder and many other things for 12 years now (and I'm only in my twenties). I've had over 48 suicide attempts and doing this list has made me realize how much I forbade myself to be happy to punish myself for things that were done to me. I managed to come up with 124 things in my list and realizing what trivial things would make me happy, which I didn't allow myself to do was really an eye-opener. I cannot thank you enough and don't mind some of the unintelligent and negative comments, they're just too damn comfortable and "clever" feeling miserable.

Greetings and much love* from Germany!! xx

  • Not Rich Enough and Not Poor Enough   15 years 2 weeks ago

Just wanted to say that school is a privilege. Some just get lucky and get aid (that's not me). I paid nearly every dollar aside from a few small scholarhips that took care of my books while my "broke" peers in luxury cars went to school for free.

Race plays a part in this too...I swear to you.

I always thought that whether you get aid or not, you are responsible for your education. Life is never fair for us in the middle.

  • Teaching Preschoolers About Money: An Interview With Beth Kobliner   15 years 2 weeks ago

My parents taught me about finances as a preschooler. Mom just had me put stamps on envelopes while she did the bills, and carefully explained how the bills worked, and about checking/ saving accounts. She repeated this many times until I could explain in my own words to Dad how everything worked. It took a while, but I am continually amazed that most people never get this explanation from their parents by high school.

  • How to Buy a BBQ Grill   15 years 2 weeks ago

I purchased the Wrangler grill earlier this year. I've cooked steaks, chicken breasts, corn, and smoked some pork loins on it already. Never worked with a charcoal grill before but it's pretty basic. It's a lot of babying up front. (coating interior with oil, sear it in, and do that again.) Nonetheless, I've had no issue with rust... even when mistakenly left uncovered in the rain. Whoops!

Three pointers with it or any charcoal grill really.
1.) Two zone cooking. Sear up those steaks and then move them aside to finish cooking.
2.) Save fuel, cook a few meals on it while the coals are still hot. (i.e. chicken breast for salads, or porkloin for tacos!)
3.) You can smoke with it, but it runs a little warmer than a water smoker. My pork loins were done in 1 1/2 hours instead of 3.

  • How to Insure Jewelry for Cheap (or Free!)   15 years 2 weeks ago

What a useful article! I never even thought of asking whether my ring is covered under our renter's insurance. Now it's on my to-do list! My ring isn't worth in the tens of thousands, but if I lost it, I'd still like to get a little money back, especially if insuring won't cost me anything extra.

  • Secret Lawn Tonic Recipe From Golf Course Groundskeeper   15 years 2 weeks ago

More information about the components of this mixture. The anti bacterial soap verses regular isn't that important. While it would seem that anti bacterial would kill important microbes, there is a very minute amount of that...when compared to the 1/2 cup of mouthwash, which will also kill bacteria. I am not saying that one should omit either, but realize that all the chemicals are being mixed together to create a nice blend and mixture. It is also important that this mixture is then going to be diluted (very diluted in fact) with water, in the hose-end-sprayer.

For those who might find it interesting I will try to break down the chemicals into general terms. The soda had loads of sugar (hopefully this isn't a surprise to anyone!! ) and the sugar is a needed element of breaking down organic in the soil, which helps to turn them into nutrients which the plants (hopefully just grass!) can use. Ammonia could be considered in this application as a 30-0-0....or a fertilizer that is very heavy in Nitrogen. Beer, is a well balanced fertilzier maybe a 6-6-6. Mixing that with ammonia in the quantities specified makes something similar to that which one might purchase at a store. The soap is an emulsifier. Plants produce wax as a protective coating, the wax builds a layer on the top of the soil, and the soap breaks that down and also breaks down other organic materials in the soil. This allows more nutrients to reach the roots. The mouthwash kills bacteria in the soil. It is potent enough (no even close or near it actually) to kill or harm the grass but it can kill bugs any other smaller things. They decompose and also help the grass.

Health insurance from the American Bar Association (ABA). I was a law student and I aged out of my dad's plan. I knew I needed health insurance but knew nothing about how to shop for a good policy. I got a solicitation from the ABA for a policy that was $795.00 per year, which sounded good since I have epilepsy and make frequent trips to doctors and hospitals. Fast forward a few months. After a few ambulance rides to the hospital, I start getting various bills related to my care. I forward them to my carrier, who soundly rejects each and every claim. All told, I owed about $30,000.00 in healthcare. The policy paid for nothing. Zero. Zilch. Notta.

The worst part was that I thought I had good insurance, and an organization like the ABA seemed like a good bet for a referral. I was wrong. So very wrong.

It's not the $795.00 I regret most, but the fact that the policy I bought turned out to be useless, the equivalent of buying regular coffee that's actually decaf. You don't realize you've been screwed until the headache kicks in, when it's already too late.

Don't forget the ceramic charcoal grills such as the Kamado or BGE (big-green-egg).. These are capable of doing stuff that the metal ones just can't do -- namely control temps by controlling air flow.. With one of these (I've got a Kamado K7 -- 600lb beastie!), I can cook pork butts, brisket and whatnot for 24+ hours on a single bag of charcoal (using the good charcoal -- not Kingsford! Try Royal Oak Lump if you can find it at the local WalMart -- way better than briquettes)

We have been year-round gas grill users for over 20 yrs and have "burned" thru many grills. We just recently replaced another but decided to purposely look for Made in America. Little did we know that would be a HUGE challenge. We have also figured out over the years that we didn't need/want many ammenities....even the side-burners that have become fairly standard on all of them isn't utilized much. So we were looking for a fairly basic model. We even had friends researching and suggesting brands they thought was American-made only to find they weren't. We found a couple, but they were MUCH more expensive than we wanted to spend so we kept looking. We FINALLY found one last weekend. And at Lowe's, at that, not a small independent merchant 50 miles away. Deals CAN be found this time of year but you have to look for them. Typically, they will start going on sale after the 4th of July.

My parents just 'handed down' to us a Weber grill that they had for nearly 25 years and it works great! They're more money but we threw out a grill that was only three years old and falling apart, so in the long run I think they're worth it!
