  • Our high, high standard of living   17 years 24 weeks ago

Pffft standards imposed by law have always been something of joke to me.

Outhouses are still the law at Alaska. I support those as well enough. Toilets overflow duh! Nice to have a backup plan.

I think the laws some places that state someone must have plumbing or a house be unfit to live in [resulting with homelessness] rather than not allowing them to stay drawing from a creek or branch nearby and boiling be ridiculous!

  • Exercise (and alcohol) good for your brain   17 years 24 weeks ago

Well saturated fat from overcooked pork fat and the oils that are overheated and carbs that absorb them are bad. Organ meat however or kidney or offal that are high in saturated fats are not harmful as everybody thinks. I argue organ meats are not group-able together in the same category as modern production methods. The native Americans were might in shape for all their offal saturated fat intake. As are the Thailand [Siam] population for the coconut eating.

I do support wine and beer drinking for heart and also that the long term effect of wine on the brain assist expanding neurons. Wine is a different animal from hard liqueurs that shrivel up cells more. Also wine has now been proven to enable radiation protection some.

  • How to Make Moonshine   17 years 24 weeks ago

200 percent proof = 100% alcohol, 180 proof is 90% alcohol, etc. About the most a person can comfortably drink is 100 to 120 proof.

  • The new face of poverty is fat   17 years 24 weeks ago

Well I know fat free gets everyone fatter (after a decade + of research) more than a small amount of whole fat product. I don't just mean the psychology of overeating of the low cal food. Rather the fact that the products are dry poorly received by the body, either being rejected as energy and go straight to become fat cells or stress out hormones. Lumpy dead weight grants the same. Eat fresh home plucking's. Partake of the more nutritious organ meats (offal) and be slimmer also rather than consuming the emptier floppier protein only deader weight flesh.

I cringe when I see people filling their shopping baskets with jars of baby foods. They are really expensive items. Baby food is "so easy" to make with a blender and has the benefit of being addictive free.

  • Europe has the Euro. Are you ready for The Amero?   17 years 24 weeks ago

I am usually nice...But I simply cannot resist this...

Ummm Master economist? What wall Genius? Where is the allocation funding for this fantasy wall the congress appproved???

  • Europe has the Euro. Are you ready for The Amero?   17 years 25 weeks ago

As others have described themselves, I relate. I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer. However let me see if I can blither blabble an explanation I have in my minds eye on how a devalued currency can be a good thing for the insanely wealthy. So good in fact that some of them may die of a heart attack laughing.

The insanely wealthy for the most part do not hold their wealth in U.S. Dollars. Perhaps they hold their wealth in other foriegn currencies and precious metals?

As we look at the stock market today standard stocks backed by the U.S. dollar are spiroling down, and the federal government is pouring money into it like there is no tomorrow with little or no effect printing more money further decreasing the value of the dollar to the likes of which I have never personally seen before. But this does not affect the insanely wealthy because their wealth is not in those common stocks. The further the market goes down, the more money is lost, the more people pull out of the market at a loss, further accellerating the downward trend. Simultaineously more and more money gets invested into gold, silver, platnum, foriegn currencies further driving up those investments.

Basically as people flock from wall street like rats from a burning ship, the age old trusty wealth investments sky rocket. Making the wealthy even wealthier. While most of the common people end up destitute.

To add insult to injury, when the current currency is declared worthless and non legal tender, enters the Amero and you can trade your old currency for the Amero for pennies on the dollar...But this does not affect the wealthy because they are not using the U.S. Dollar within issues of barter and trade into the Amero.

A good lesson here is the Euro...When the Euro came into effect a conversion rate was established for each contry involved. Germany for instance was issued a 2 to 1 ratio conversion...Those who had German Marks basically lost half their wealth with the stroke of a pen. Greece was 340 to 1. But those who kept investments other than cash were impervious to the exchange.

Think of it in terms of the Stock Market. When is the time to buy? The old addage buy low and sell high.

So if you think of it this way, when the Dollar crashes, and the Amero comes into play...It is very good for the insanely rich because they have not lost a dime, the stock markets will be destitute, standard investors will be broke, and John Q citizen will be trading their U.S. Dollars for Ameros for pennies on the dollar scratching their heads wondering what happened.

In the mean tim guess who buys up and owns more corporate power than ever in history? You got it...The insanely wealthy.

  • Will A Dental Discount Plan Save You Money?   17 years 25 weeks ago
    ugh

I really wish this post would have come up before I shelled out the cash for our plan. I just got my wife in for a checkup at our "normal" dentist. By normal, I mean he's the one in our neighborhood; we've actually never gone enough to have a dentist of our own. Anyway, we walk out with a $3800 estimate. Cavaties, a crown repair, and a mouth guard that she "has to have" because she bikes. Oh, and we have no dental insurance and his cash discount is 5%. FAIL!

We can pick up insurance for $50/month (Delta Dental is what he suggested), but they won't cover any of her work for at least 6 months. So, I did some searching and found the discount plans. We signed up for the Aetna Dental Access plan.

I contacted a new dentist (the original wasn't on the list), and talked with the receptionist. She sent me a list of prices for a few random things & their prices were almost identical to the other dentists. She seemed to know about the plan and said that it would save us roughly half. They contact the benefit company for updated pricing on each visit she said.

The wife's first appointment is coming up, so we'll see what happens. I'll try and drop back in to update you.

  • Will A Dental Discount Plan Save You Money?   17 years 25 weeks ago

I have no dental insurance and need quite a bit of work done. I havent' had dental coverage in twenty years, and barely make rent most times (I work as an independent contractor and have no real recourse to this)

So I haven't been to the dentist in over ten years. I know this is terrible- The last time I went I had my teeth cleaned and x-rays taken. I need all four wisdom teeth out and have several cavities and now, years later, a few cracked molars. I can't afford to have the work done and have quite terrible credit since my divorce, meaning that no office I have spoken to would allow me to make payments. I'm not religious so I have no church group to fall back on.

I wish I knew where to start, to deal with my bad dental health, but I simply have not enough funds to do it. I make just enough not to qualify for federal assistance. I have no children. I'm under the age of sixty (there's a clinic here for: you guessed it: parents of small children, and the elderly.)

I can't seem to find any way to even get in to see a dentist to begin with, let alone a way to pay for the care.

Any dentists have any advice for me? I live in a small town in Oregon. And no, there are no dental school near me. (I don't own a car, either. Part of being poor is also, being frugal.)

We just booked a amtrak trip for my wife and I to go visit family for the holidays. For a trip from Houston, TX to Cleveland, OH we saved almost $1000 ( between the two of us) compared to the best airline rates we could find on "priceline" "travelocity" ect...
Plus we havent taken a train trip in the US before...
    Wish us luck!

  • Not the sort of person who ...   17 years 25 weeks ago

    @ Guest:

You're right--there are plenty of things that really do define who you are.  I tried to list a few relatively universal ones there at the end, but you're right that there are plenty of others (like not being the sort of person who earns his living as a pimp) that are just as important, but that (depending on circumstances) can seem either urgently relevant or so far out there as to seem not worth mentioning.  For the people for whom they're on the radar, they're very much worth keeping in mind.

I spend so much of my time around people for whom a statement like "I'm not the sort of person who trades sex for dugs" would draw perplexed looks, that I probably don't think as much as I ought to about the people for whom it would draw approving nods--so thanks for the comment.

  • Can Men Be Trained To Understand Women?   17 years 25 weeks ago

Just because 20-40 percent MIGHT fall into the presumptuous male-female extremes, the vast MAJORITY 50-70% fall into the middle of the bell curve with mixing balances. Of course depending on situation and context, those in the majority are generally forced by social prejudice to adapt and ape/express the minority extremes instead of modify for what works best. The same goes for human sexuality behaviors.

  • Will A Dental Discount Plan Save You Money?   17 years 25 weeks ago

We spent $40 on a discount plan last year and it saved us $0. Our dentist's office said our cash-payment price was cheaper than the plan's "discounted" price. We chalked it up to live-and-learn and did not renew.

Thank you to those in the dental profession who took the time to respond to this thread.
