"...afraid that a Nationalized Medical program (like what congress gets) will mean poor care or inaccessible care for all, when in fact Canadian, British, and French programs conclusively show they are very effective for citizens and Doctors alike....."
Take a look at this article from this week's Globe and Mail....
With conditions in Canada's hospitals comparable to a Third World country, according to one specialist, doctors on the front lines suggest ways to keep ER departments from turning into dumping grounds....
As I said, "How long before Best Buy is your only high street option?" High street, as in a bricks and mortar store. I did talk about online retailers separately, and I can imagine Crutchfield will be one of those big guys that swallows up the small fries.
In October, 2007 I flew Spirit Air from Detroit to Orlando for $80 round trip. In January, 2008 my son, my husband and I each flew there for $16 (+ tax)!
Last month we flew there for $66 each + tax.
Can't beat that with a stick! I am going in a week or so to watch the space shuttle launch since the prices are so low! Who cares if I travel with a carry-on only? No problem to me to carry on a soft drink and/or a snack. It's quick and easy and CHEAP to fly this airlines.
"Consider consumer electronics: Circuit City is about to go under, closing 155 of its stores. Sharper Image is dead. CompUSA is barely alive after being bought by Tiger Direct. That leaves Best Buy, Ultimate Electronics, Radio Shack and, ummm, let me think. How long before Best Buy is your only high street option? " YOu forget about the #1 online internet retailer of electronics: Crutchfield.
This post does make me a bit nostalgic. Admittedly, I love pop culture, and I really appreciated your comparisons between business and Stallone in this post. You may be right in wondering whether or not this brand takeover will further expand into the Internet. In a way, it already has. Thank you for posting this, and for giving me something to ponder today.
Jaws 4 - The Revenge. Spielberg would be turning in his grave if he were dead. I thought Rocky Balboa was OK, but Cop Land was a first rate performance by Sly.
Our CVS carries lots of interesting items to spend the extra bucks on -- convenience food, paper towels, school supplies, batteries, film, etc. However, as you learned, the items specified in the ads are tricky. And at the one I go to, they're often out of stock on sale items and specials.
I know your blog is about a year old, but I wanted to let you know that there is a definition of organic. It can be found in the Code of Federal Regulations Title 7: Agriculture Part 205: National Organic Program. These standards must be followed by anyone using the USDA seal on their products... or else they will pay a hefty fine.
Yes, the livestock section is not where it should be, but in the next few months they are making new 'access to pasture' rules to eliminate companies like Horizon from being called organic.
I was panicing about my freezer being left open by the nanny this morning (6am). It is now 1:30 and the floor was covered with sticky water. EEEEEEWWWWWW!
Now that I have guidelines to follow in the clean-up and throw away process, i don't want to dock her pay....
People complaining about Socialist governments failiing or supposedly being useless...
I am sorry, but how well has Capitalism done? The gap between rich and poor in America is massive, is that truly fair? You cannot argue that the American dream is reality surely?
Socialism is pretty much THE fairest economic/ social idea. End of. I cannot see any way to argue with it. Taxes are good for everyone if proportional; you are lucky enough to have earned more, so you give more, you earn less, give less. How can you possibly argue with that? Surely everyone in your "great" country would prefer a national health service? As oppossed to the unlucky majority being stuck with bills to pay their whole lives. And what if the government provided housing? How many people actually own their own houses? Mortgages are actually a kinda loan also, so until you've paid it all you don't own the house. Duh!
America needs to get away from this idea that it is somehow amazingly great, and free, and fair and the single best Democracy ever. It really is not. Get over yourselves and see the truth, and start to care for others rather than just yourselves. (obviously aimed more at the right wing fools over where you are)
Okay, if you look at figures for happiness, healthcare and pretty much every area of society, you will see that the Scandanvian countries, particulalry Sweden, constantly come out near the top.
So stop the "oh no, I might lose $8000 dollars more of my $800,000 dollar estate!" attitude, and see the bigger picture.
Oh no, sorry you haven't. So Thatcher may have been the worst Prime minister ever, but that isn't the point.
The whole point of a class based society is that a lucky few can climb through the ranks and achieve highly; but the majority don't.
Socialism in fact wants to do away with class-ism and base things much more on ability and hard-work; i.e. making it easier to do exactly what Obama kinda did.
And plus, wtf is everyone going on about Britain being Socialist? It is not at all. All you American's are just so right-wing that you don't know what the hell socialism is. I wish Britain WAS Socialist, as it would be such a better place, fairer for all; but as it is, it is not. Fortunately however, even our mainstream right is left of your mainstream left, thankfully.
Yep, savers are still suffering in the current environment.
I hope you find Spend 'til The End to be useful. I thought the framework it describes to be a very useful one. It doesn't so much provide the answers as provide a structure for doing the analysis. Consider stopping by that post and leaving a comment with your thoughts, once you've finished the book and had a chance to mull it over for a bit.
Different strokes indeed. I didn't miss the humour (English?), I just didn't find it all that funny. But the action scenes, well, they were laughable in places.
Different strokes and all that. I just don't know what to say to someone who thinks Austin Powers is funny, but missed the humour in Demolition Man.
But, to the point. As long as we depend on large corporations, we'll be subject to their whims and their consolidations. There are areas where we may not be able to avoid that -- banking, for one. But there are also many areas where we are free to do for ourselves rather than moaning about the big, bad corportions.
I highly recommend "Idiocracy" for another example of bigger fish eating the little ones, etc.
Quality entertainment...
From IMDB:
From the creative mind of Mike Judge ("Beavis & Butthead", "King of the Hill", "Office Space") comes a film about the future that it's so utopic.
Private Joe Bauers, the definition of "average American", is selected by the Pentagon to be the guinea pig for a top-secret hibernation program. Forgotten, he awakes 500 years in the future. He discovers a society so incredibly dumbed-down that he's easily the most intelligent person alive.
Another thoughtful comment. I enjoy reading your posts. - I agree with you that competition is one of the best things in our economic system even though most companies try to be the best and dominate all other competitors. We always have to make sure that there is healthy competition out there.
...I'll definitely leave a comment on that post when I finish the book. I'm usually a very quick reader, but have been paralyzed by the election!

Wait till you see Wall-E.

I'm just glad you didn't suggest switching from tp to three sea shells.

You know, I still think Alexander was the worst movie of all times.

I'm sure she thanks you too!

I wish I'd learned of this hair selling thing sooner. I just got mine cut last night probably about 15 inches!!!

Redeemed himself with Rocky Balboa in 2006.

I've also been thinking about this for some time now. Just didn't know where to start. Either starting one or joining one.
