Not to get uber-political, but the hope guy is in favor of reducing healthcare choices, even if we end up getting more fast food choices. Personally, I'd rather lose fast food choices.
Note that the "Taco Bell" reference only occurs in the American release of the movie. If you watch the European release, they're using "Pizza Hut" instead, so it's safe to assume both are clever product placement.
The movie also has one other future prediction worth remembering: The question of a live phone operator if a caller would prefer talking to a machine instead...
I have been turning the idea of an investment club in my mind for a few weeks. I will definitely be coming back here if I decide to go through with it.
Although I appreciate your opinion, it's not about paying taxes, we all need to pay taxes. It's about paying excess taxes, shakedown taxes to provide for others. I do realize that there are social constructs that prevent certain sects from achieving a certain level of wealth. However saying that we accumulate wealth at the expense of the less fortunate is a circular argument. We provide jobs for those 'poor and middle class'. Furthermore, if you don't mind paying more taxes, you can pick up my tab while your at it ;)
Reminds me of Blue Sun Corporation from the series Firefly. Described by the creators as a supercorporation as if Coke, Wal-Mart, and Microsoft all merged.
I have been mystery shopping, product recall and retrieval and quality assessment for 11 years now. I started doing it full time 3 years ago. Last year I made about $20K, which isn't much, but I set my own hours, get to volunteer at the local animal shelter 2 or more days a week, vacation when I wish to and the only butthead I have to put up with me. The only downside was when gas became so expensive; I was still reimbursed at the rate I had been getting a year before. This is not really a job if you have a family, but as I am single I do well.
REMEMBER...the IRS only cares how you will file as of the end of the year. So if you know you will file married filing separately, go ahead & update your W-4 form for federal & state ASAP! This was the one thing I forgot about & ended up owing so much I had to get a loan from a family member.
...off topic, Philip, I took your advice and got Spend Til the End..why I may not yet (still reading) think its as great as you did, I love all books that give a different perspective or toss out a different philosophy on the topic of money/saving/investment/wealth.
I think it's great that starbucks is giving away free coffee. I am about 3 blocks away from the original one, here in Seattle. However, It is hard to believe that anyone not planning on voting, was actually convinced to vote because of a a free cup of java.
Thanks, Starbucks. Great to know you're encouraging me to put my decision to vote or not up for sale. And that it's OK if I lie to you if I don't vote.
Another great article, Xin. I went to the Ramsey site upon Mary's suggestion and trying to find anything worthwhile on the site is like tip-toeing through a mine-field. I think your readers will enjoy http://www.financialtales.com a little more.
Excellent article, Julie. Many of the lessons learned from the depression era were passed down as stories. Stories are a great way of conveying timeless messages. I think your readers will also enjoy visiting... http://www.financialtales.com
I agree the offer appears dubious on the surface, however the offer is coupled with 100% real estate collateral to where the average moderately intelligent person could verify. This offer is to get ball rolling until people in need realize this offer is legitimate.
A minimum of $500,000.00, until the interested party determines this is legal and safe.
Nowadays, we should be consistent in checking them. We should be keeping track of account activities. Either you keep a handwritten record of transactions using the register that comes with your checks or use a software program, such as Intuit's Quicken or an online version of any of the financial programs there is. The point is to have a record of every check, deposit and electronic fund transfer that's involved with the account.
i just want to know if the vote is mine to do what i like with. can i give it to another?
i know people died to get us the vote,, if people today want to sell their vote because they don't care which party is in power then what LAW do they break.
i'm more curious than serious... i don't want to listen to thepoliticians any longer.. if you want my vote pay for it, if you want me to attend a meeting and listen to you then pay me for my valuable time.
if there are conditions attached to my vote then state them clearly before i accept the conditions and the vote.
BUT, if we sell our vote (or give it away) then don't ever complain about policy or government.

Hi - I run a Mystery Shopping company and and incoming President of the Mystery Shopping Providers Association - Asia/Pacific (real mouthful).
Excellent article.
Would you mind if we repost this on our new shopper blog? http://www.shoppersource.mysteryshop.org/

Pepsico doesn't own Yum. It used to own Pizza Hut, Taco Bell and KFC but spun them off a decade ago into Tricon, which was purchased by Yum Foods.
I think Pepsi is 100% divested - it doesn't have even partial ownership any more.
It makes sense too - it's hard to sell soda and chips to a fast food chain like McDonald's when you own a direct competitor.

As I mentioned in an earlier comment, Ohio added a ballot referendum this year. I'm pleased to report that the ballot will pass!
Hopefully this will help prevent others from getting stuck in this endless trap, at least here in Ohio.

shove it right up in there.
I tried to get into it, I just couldn't. But yep, that's the idea.

Just another reason to spend some of your money on local, independent businesses.
Also, Stallone's own Over the Top was a much crappier movie.
awww, I loved that movie, it was so prescient. the minitunes!
I think this idea is great and thanks Loaded Piggey for suggesting meetup.com.
It is especially rewarding if you can encourage and help one another during this period of turmoil.

I encourage people to openly talk about money. The only thing better than socializing with friends, is socializing with friends and making money.

Investment clubs are a great idea. They're better than fantasy football and can be much more profitable. Be sure to visit financialtales.com too

BTW, I found this survey about the current economic downturn and I think it’s helpful to get involved.
