    @James:

    Thanks for the praise!

The admins tell me that they're thinking of plans for offering our content in other languages, so they'd rather I didn't.  However, I'd be pleased to do a guest post that you could translate and post somewhere.  Let me know!

HAH! I like the adult subject matter warning on this post.  I think sex does clear up acne, though.

    HA!

So, so true. It'd be nice if wanting sex were a catalyst for being approached by others. Odd that like attracts like, you know?

  • It Bears Repeating - Driving Slower Saves Money   17 years 40 weeks ago

The ultimate issue is engine efficiency (this is not mpg). Gas engine efficiency is low at low speeds and highest at around the max torque point. However, air drag increases with the square of the velocity. There is a magic point depending on engine & relative wind speed.

Slowing down doesn't necessarily improve your efficiency.
Speeding up doesn't necessarily improve your efficiency.

So what you've discovered is the efficiency peak for your car is at a slower speed. If anything, I wish the feds would require such speed vs. relative wind speed vs. efficiency curves be included in manuals of new cars.

You're so right about #1! I almost always get hit on when I'm currently getting lots of it, which is amusingly ironic. Why don't people hit on me when I NEED it?! :p

There's definitely a glow around people who are getting laid.

I love that these are all things that I can do without spending too much money (or any at all) and all deal with things that I have control over. It's nice not to read an article telling me what kind of foundation will change my life ...

  • How to Launder Money   17 years 40 weeks ago

Advice please. When one rents a safe deposit box at a bank isn't your social security number recorded when renting the box? Wouldn't the feds have access to these records? Unless I'm wrong, I think that safe deposit boxes are not a very safe way of hiding case. Please prove me wrong. I await your comments.

There are also working class students in high-cost areas who get hosed. If you're in that boat, you can't afford college but you also don't get financial aid because your family earns "too much" even if it's only a working class income where you live.

  • Knowing Your Triggers Can Prevent Emotional Spending   17 years 40 weeks ago

Thanks so much for this post. I have slowly been cutting back on my subscriptions for this reason. I do love fashion and fashion magazines. I have also been perusing more fashion blogs for this very reason. I agree that they foster more creativity than the magazines, which is my goal, to be more creative in my style. My favorite magazine is Lucky, but it is an awful trigger for me. It has been very hard to give up, but for my sanity, and finances, I think it is the best thing to do.

I also can not window shop, I've tried and then end up in the store next day buying. This has been difficult for me but I am determined to get it under control! Thanks again for the inspiring post!!

  • How to Avoid Foreclosure   17 years 40 weeks ago
    .

Its a shame. More people need to be educated about the help they can get from a loss mitigation company. I own Foreclosurelight Loss Mitigation LLC, we work on the borrowers behalf not the lender. There are ways a person can work out a loan modification with their lender to keep their home. Most times the lender will work with the customer but the customer may not have the time to complete everything the lender may require to do a work out. That is where a loss mitigator comes in.
More people should know about this.

  • When it Pays to Call in the Experts   17 years 40 weeks ago

I totally concur with Andrea Dickson. With my job, I'm salaried, so no matter how many hours I put in, I receive the same bi-monthly wage. I think most middle-class Americans (i.e., those who earn significantly less than $100 p/hr) is in a similar boat.

If I can't coordinate the time over several weekends for hubby and me to accomplish said paint job, I would have to take personal time off (with pay, like accrued vacation time) to accomplish it. Spending nearly one thousand dollars to have my house painted by someone else is ludicrous. I have a difficult time with anyone saying this is a "need," but instead, a "want". I have a dear friend who lives in a gorgeous home and she and her husband make double what we do and they have no kids at home (we have 2 teenagers), but she constantly complains about their lack of money. However, you need to know that the Number 1 "need" on her list of expenses is the two of them going out to dinner 5 nights a week. Strange and sad that her "need" to have someone else do her cooking because she "doesn't like to do it" is draining her bank account.

Unless a task is way over your head (the initial point in the blog's opening paragraph) and to accomplish it requires special training and/or purchasing special tools and materials, I think those folks who are genuinely frugal would make an effort to do it themselves. The others, it seems, are frugal only when it's convenient. And if that's the case, God bless ya, but justifying spending money simply because you "don't wanna do" something is potentially just the tip of the root of any financial hardships you're experiencing. If you can afford it, I'd never consider chastising you for how you choose to spend your money. However, if you are financially strapped and on the edge of disaster, it should be self-evident that paying someone else to do something for you that you could handily accomplish is likely an ill-afforded luxury, NOT a need.

My friend who goes out to dinner 5 times a week justifies the expense as something she "needs for mental health." I think that's just an excuse; if she and her husband were serious about solving their financial problems, eliminating restaurant dinners right off the bat would be a no-brainer. But it's always easier to whine about being broke than to make wise choices (i.e., perceived sacrifices) that would begin resolving the financial crunch.

  • When it Pays to Call in the Experts   17 years 40 weeks ago

i agree - why do it yourself when you can have a professional do it better and more effectively? for all my house projects i use "servicespider.com" to find a good contractor. it is a website similar to Ebay (but for services). if yo need something done to your house you just post the project on the website and local contractors come in and bid for your job. that way you can get the cheapest (or most reputable) contractor to do the work for you. i know the site having a promotion this fall so you can save even more money by getting gas and gift cards from them.

  • Not Rich Enough and Not Poor Enough   17 years 40 weeks ago

This is just one great example of how the middle class gets screwed. Look into health insurance options for another classic example. If you have no money at all you can get aide or if you have tons of money you are able to afford it out of pocket. However, if you are in the middle class you don't qualify for any type of state help and you struggle to pay out of pocket.

  • The Federal Minimum Wage Increases This Week - Are You Getting a Pay Raise?   17 years 40 weeks ago

Wow, I didn't know the minimum wage in Australia is so high.  Anyway, the cost of living here is not low.  In San Mateo county you need to make at least $17 an hour to afford to rent an average place by yourself.  I haven't met anyone that actually is paid below the state minimum wage, but I know some people that are close to it.  For example, my hubby's ex-roomie was paid $10 an hour at Pete's Coffee.  My hubby let him pay less than 1/3 of the rent so it was ok.  I think it is pretty hard to save money in that situation, though.

I certainly didn't mean to imply that people who need help are stupid or that the readers of this website are stupid. I am frustrated that the content of wisebread seems to be getting less helpful, reliable or relevant. Like the post a few weeks (months) ago where the author said that drinking more water would cure cancer. There seems to be a need for more oversight, more vision, more relevant content.

  • The Federal Minimum Wage Increases This Week - Are You Getting a Pay Raise?   17 years 40 weeks ago

The minimum wage laws are 'feel-good' populists' ideas which don't help anyone. If you are working for minimum wage right now and don't want to, don't. Even the illegals standing on the corner 7 to 8 dollars an hour and that's with a lunch. I know that for a fact.

It's another case of 'the government knows more than everyone else'. Yes, the government certainly has the smarts to figure out what a minimum wage is. If you believe that, I'll sell you a $600 hammer!

Minimum wages ties the hands of entrepreneurs. What typically happens is they end up hiring less people, or, better still, hiring under the table. Artificially propping up prices by government edict also causes prices of good to rise. Inflation.

Please repeat 3 times a day - government dumb, government dumb, government dumb.

I find it fascinating that the majority of people are willing to abdicate their liberty to a faceless government. In essence, have someone else relieve them of responsibility.

  • The Federal Minimum Wage Increases This Week - Are You Getting a Pay Raise?   17 years 40 weeks ago

The minimum wage affects all workers, not just those at the bottom. It establishes the floor from which all pay rates are judged. When the minimum wage goes up, eventually other wages do too. Businesses have opposed this because it cuts into profits. Some costs are passed on to consumers, but some are covered with reduced profits, so the middle class gets stronger despite inflation. Right now we have inflation cause by rising energy costs, not rising wages, so everyone gets weaker except oil companies.

The logic behind not having a minimum wage might be good for some businesses but horrible for people. Slavery was very good for slave owners, but horrible for slaves, and it didn't do much for the working class that competed with slaves. The same thing happens with no minimum wage. Do you really want a race to the bottom? Think of a decent minimum wage as a minimum morality, with economic benefits for society as a whole.

  • The Federal Minimum Wage Increases This Week - Are You Getting a Pay Raise?   17 years 40 weeks ago

Here's why I don't like the minimum wage getting raised.

Let's say you work at a minimum wage job, you take your job very seriously and work hard. You work there a year and get a 70 cent raise so you make $6.55 an hour. Thursday rolls around and now the zit faced kid who just got hired makes the same amount as you and you're back to making minimum wage.

Just raising the minimum wage is unfair for people who work hard and try to move up in a company. It either shouldn't go up at all or it should go up for all people making under a certain income (which will never happen).

  • How To Get A Discount Every Time   17 years 40 weeks ago

Ok, im a sophmore in High school. I was in my business class and we were watching a movie on how to get discounts on prices. This lady wuold go into a store. Or man. and would ask for a SALES DISCOUNT. The store associate hshe would ask would say "Im sorry but i cannot do that". You then ask for the manager. You then ask the manager and he/she would say usually "alright i can give you a discount". usually around 10-20% off.
