  • If you're so smart, why aren't you rich?   18 years 5 weeks ago

... so they take fewer risks.

More education translates to more income ... more current income means more that you have to be prepared to sacrifice to hang out your own shingle. Hanging out your own shingle (i.e. going into business for yourself) is probably the best way to get rich (if you pump your profits into outside investments and/or sell your business for a lot of money).

In other words: smarter people take less risks ... therefore, they can limit the upside, by being less prepared to risk the downside.

It's not always true (I have a degree, was a professional, but took a 50% - 70% 'paycut' to go into my own business/es).

  • Baby Carrots: The Frugal Idea That Isn't   18 years 5 weeks ago

I came to this site because I am investigating a forward that came to me about baby cut carrots being soaked in a water and chlorine solution after they have been prepared, due to there being no skin on them to protect them. Does anyone know if this is true? If so, then we are really not doing ourselves any favours by eating them, - sadly, because I love baby cut carrots!!.

  • Big Savings and Free Shipping Through Monday at Ann Taylor Loft!   18 years 5 weeks ago

Ann Taylor loft frequently has coupon code deals, so don't feel like you have to buy this weekend to get a good deal. I've noticed their clothes typically sell out in a relatively short time period. I think this is a clever marketing technique, because it encourages impulse buying, knowing an item is not going to be around for long. I try to resist this sales pressure and remind myself it's not a big deal if something sells out, new merchandise is always coming out. I buy my work cloths at Ann Taylor Loft, so I've become somewhat of a coupon code hound. Here's just some of the coupon codes right now - notice they don't expire this weekend:

$25 off $50 + Free Shipping Ann Taylor LOFT Coupon Code 80200012 [Exp. 04/13]
20% off + Free Shipping on $100 Ann Taylor LOFT Coupon Code 10601358 [Exp. 03/30] or 10601375 [Exp. 04/27]
25% off on Regular-priced Maternity Order + Free Shipping Ann Taylor LOFT Coupon Code 104004109 [Exp. 03/31]

Here's another tip - if you can, try to divide your order into separate orders of around $50 each, then use the $25 off coupon code for each order. Just don't be tempted to buy more than you would have to get to that $50 mark. I bought 2 pairs of jeans for $54 each, but ordered them separately to use the 80200012 coupon code for each pair.

  • How To Read an Annual Report   18 years 5 weeks ago

For most large corporations, the first half of the annual report (the glossy part with photos) is like a mini magazine showing off the company's products or projects. The meat is in the financials at the back. However, I think the annual report alone is not enough. Serious investors should also take a look at quarterly statements. These days, you can find all those reports on the web.

  • How To Read an Annual Report   18 years 5 weeks ago

I'm actually taking an Intro Financial Accounting course this semester. I'd considered going into a program to become a C.A., but I don't think I will. On the other hand, I'm finding it very useful to know how to really read the financial statements, what ratios to look for, and how it all gets put together.

One of the things I've realized, though, is that it makes no sense to look at a single financial statement in a vacuum. You've got to also know the numbers (or at least the ratios) for other companies and for the industry, as well as previous years of the company you're studying. Otherwise, you've got nothing to compare the numbers *to*. And numbers without a context aren't really helpful at all.

  • Do You Always Keep the Money You Find?   18 years 5 weeks ago

A couple years ago, around Christmas time, I found a one hundred dollar bill on the ground in front of a Walgreens. It was on my way out and once I picked it up, I immediately felt tingles down my back. I was a teenager in desperate need of a gaming system so I ended up buying a Nintendo Gamecube and Super Smash Brothers bundle.

  • CFL Bulbs: Greener than most, but not green enough   18 years 5 weeks ago

Um, hey guys, nobody told me I was trading in my admittedly energy-wasting bulb for something that has more disposal instructions than a nuclear reactor.

I should have known something was up when Walmart started pushing them-- they're probably made with the toxins left over after the Chinese finish making our kids' toys.

  • How to Make Moonshine   18 years 5 weeks ago

You need sugar for the yeast to eat.  If the moonshiners of a hundred or two hundred years ago had been able to buy refined white sugar cheap like it is today, that's all they'd have used.  They used corn becaue it was the cheapest source of sugar they had.  (And it was cheap because it was expensive to transport, at least until the days of the railroads.)

There's a lot of sugar in corn, but also a lot of starch (and of course corn starch is pretty much all starch), and the yeast aren't going to be able to do much with the starch.

With barley (for making beer or scotch), you can let the seeds just start to germinate, which produces enzymes that turn the starch into sugar.  The process is called malting.  I don't know if there's an equivalent process for corn, or if corn is high enough in sugar that you don't need to do anything.

The photo was a lucky find.  I searched for "scientist" and "expert" in the Library of Congress archives without finding what I wanted.  Then I searched for "laboratory" and there it was.

  • Are Your Frugal Ways Hurting Us All?   18 years 5 weeks ago

Hey my saturn was 13,000 NEW and I didn't even have a financing charge. Granted this was in 03, I still made sure some people in TN had some food on their plate. My car even has a sticker saying it was built in TN. it's still on to this day. I would rather my hard earned money go to the local person so they can enjoy their lifestyle (EX. local grocer , clothing store) rather then being just another layer in some guy's roll (Big Box store, China) Guess with that case it's who has the better deal.

Besides cars are a bad example. For the most part they are all big companies. Don't get that twisted with your local startup company. Imagine a locally owned coffee shop close to a starbucks. You can go to either. They both use fair trade coffee, both taste good. But if I don't go to starbucks, i'm not gonna be missed money wise or myself as a person. At the local shop however any revenue they miss of course they'll see.

Working for a local company gives you a different mindset which you can see ( unless it's a real $&!&$% to work for ) Then you can say "hey jill, what's new? How's your thesis coming along" Other then "Hello how are ya? Such and such coffee so many pumps, this temp blah blah blah)" and if you start up any talk the manager usually starts shooting dirty looks at the worker etc. Besides the local coffee shops I know have live music, Art shows, wifi (free), contribute to the local economy, and much more. I will support that before I support the same store with the same green walls everywhere I go. Why go to the mermaid if all i'm doing is making some guy in Seattle rich when I live in Philadelphia? It's proven that it's so good for the economy if anything you buy is from a 150 mile radius from your home.

  • If you're so smart, why aren't you rich?   18 years 5 weeks ago

I think you have to do a little bit of both to stay ahead. However, I would lean more towards the second option.

Become wealthy the slow and fast way:)

  • CFL Bulbs: Greener than most, but not green enough   18 years 5 weeks ago

    @Winston

Because of the relatively "sudden" push to change over CFLs, many people who used to use incandescent lighting in their homes suddenly have fluorescents, creating a need for a bit more education on the subject. And believe me, I am in favor of properly disposing of batteries, paint and (perhaps more importantly) computer parts. People have been reminded over and over of the need to properly dispose of paint and batteries. There just isn't the sheer amount of long-term discussion for CFLs and computers.

  • CFL Bulbs: Greener than most, but not green enough   18 years 5 weeks ago

Wait for that "blue tinge" to be taken out of LED based bulbs, and then we've *really* got a contender. Recent tests have shown something like 100+ years for a MTBF for many LED style bulbs; having light bulbs that will last longer than I will seems pretty compelling :).

  • Tips for Finding Legitimate Work-From-Home Opportunities   18 years 5 weeks ago

That was a great article. I totally agree about freelance sites. They're great for people that live outside the U.S. looking to work at home. But for U.S. based employees it's better to focus on some of the resources you provided.

But with that said, there are many more resources than Wahm that provide you a wealth of free work at home information, leads, videos on how to avoid scams.

I would encourage you to visit:
    www.WorkAtHomeNoScams.com
    www.WorkAtHomeCareers.com

In terms of avoiding scams you should visit the following pages:
    www.WorkAtHomeCareers.com/scams
    www.WorkAtHomeNoScams.com/scams
    www.WorkAtHomeNoScams.com/2008/02/27/work-at-home-scams-video/

Just thought you may want to know about all the other resources available. Wahm is great but it's definitely not the only free and comprehensive work at home resource out there.

    I hope this helps.

  • CFL Bulbs: Greener than most, but not green enough   18 years 5 weeks ago

I don't understand why this has become such a big deal. Fluorescent lights have always contained mercury -- proper disposal for CFLs is no different than what proper disposal for fluorescent tubes has been for decades.

You are also not supposed to put paint or batteries in the garbage (among other things such as containers from many cleaning products or pesticides). The proper place to dispose of your CFLs is almost certainly the place that you (should) have been taking these items.

And if you haven't been concerned about properly disposing of hazardous household products before, why the sudden concern about CFLs?

  • 5 Great Choices for Free Online Data Storage   18 years 5 weeks ago

Good job, Paul. I've been eyeing some online options for a while now since switching from Apple's Annual Tax (i.e. DotMac). I loved the way that integrated with everything, but it got to slow to be useful.

One suggestion I have regarding backing up: don't forget to back up your email correspondence if you're using POP3 with it being deleted from the server. My hard drive crashed last year, and I had everything backed up except for my mail. Six months worth of non-recoverable traffic. I'm still paying for it.

  • CFL Bulbs: Greener than most, but not green enough   18 years 5 weeks ago

I am hoping that as these bulbs wear out (in 5-7 years) that more places will have easier recycling programs. I have turned in fluorescent bulbs (large ones, that I assume also have mercury - see how stuff works) at recycling events (not through weekly pickup) but it will be nice to see a a comprehensive program. I installed CFLs where I could in my house, and my utility bill has dropped by $1 per day.

Good news for those living in El Paso County, CO and Teller County, CO - El Paso County has a household waste program that also includes disposal of CFLs.

    According to their PDF file:

"The El Paso County Household Chemical Waste Collection Facility accepts the following items that contain mercury: fever thermometers, light switches, thermostats, and fluorescent lights that do NOT have green tips (green tips indicate environmentally friendly products that can be safely discarded with household trash.)"

They also have a very extensive recycling program for chemicals, electronics, batteries and other items.

I urge those in my area to check out their website at:

    http://adm.elpasoco.com/Environmental_Services/Solid_Waste_Management/

They can be reached at 719-250-7878
