Nora, your article aptly summarizes the basic essentials entrepreneurs on-the-run need to survive. I'm a newbie in this industry and your tips are very helpful. From your experience, would a standby assistant be helpful in this industry?
These lessons are worth a pot of gold! Though said in different ways, I've observed that the lessons affirmed the new trend of inbound marketing: businesses listening to their clients instead of bombarding clients with information.
I still write 5 or 6 checks every month. There are still lots of businesses in a small town that don't take debit/credit cards. Also the school (lunches) and church. And, strangely enough, my Hubbys life insurance premium. You can't pay online, so its easier to mail a check than drive to the office.
I still wash my Hubbys work clothes in warm water. I tried cold, but it just doesn't get the grease and manure stains and smells out. I did cut way back on the amount of det used tho, one tablespoon for regular loads, two for dirty stuff seems to work pretty good. I am a TIDE gal, using the reduced amount, and watching for sales and coupons keeps the price under control enough that I haven't been too tempted to try the homemade stuff, yet.
If it's no different, I'd still pay more for it, as it tastes much better than the generic store brand milk. Tastes fresher, and not as watery. I buy the fat-free.
We love using Chegg to rent textbooks and save a lot of money! I wanted to share a code that your readers can use to get a discount on their text order. Put in the code when ordering and hit the "apply" button. The code also gives you back an additional $5 when selling Chegg your used texts.
The code does not have an expiration date so it can be used with every order. Here it is:
I write a check or two a month, on average. We're in a small rural town and a couple of places don't take cards and it's sometimes not convenient or feasible to have proper cash on hand. Also, with kids in school there are often field trip fees or club tshirts or book orders or fundraiser orders or other things that need to be paid for and a check is the requested or convenient option.
I really enjoy reading you blog, but I did notice an error in your article. In this section:
3. Invest the rest
Temporary emergencies like the loss of a job are, in normal times, resolved within six months. Chances are good you won't need to touch your investment. But if you deplete your savings and need to come up with more cash, start with your Roth IRA. Your contributions can be withdrawn at any time tax-free and penalty-free, and if your situation is resolved, you can re-contribute your withdrawn funds. Without a Roth IRA, you would have to sell taxable investments. This is not a preferred option, but that is why I suggest having a six-month buffer in cash.
You mentioned that you can withdraw assets from a Roth at any time tax- and penalty-free. I actually work for an investment firm and my group specializes in retirement account marketing. We've worked on a lot of Roth IRA pieces, and this topic of when you can withdraw assets is a very confusing one that many people get wrong. While you're correct in saying that you can withdraw assets tax free, unfortunately the penalty part of that statement is incorrect. There are certain requirements you have to meet in order to withdraw assets penalty-free (one being holding the Roth IRA for at least 5 years). Publication 590 on irs.gov outlines these requirements.
Amen to the "use less detergent". Modern detergents aren't the villainous substances some people claim, but they are very powerful and should be used in moderation.
The manual on my high-efficiency washer actually suggests regular cleanings by running the washer on empty with chlorine bleach on a regular basis and by drying off the gasket and door after every load.
That may be a bit excessive, though. I just remove the soap tray and leave the door open after each wash so that it can dry out on its own.
Yep. "Baby" carrots have almost no nutritional value. That's because the skin is where the good stuff is, and it's the same with apples (but not bananas or oranges, thank goodness), so those peeled ready to eat apples are also like baby carrots- washed, whittled and bagged, sold at a ridiculous markup and all uniform and crisp. The "babies" have a little fiber and vitamin A, but not as much as the whole ones do.
Having 'been there/done that', I see some great wisdom here! I wish I'd known about these suggestions 30 years ago... but many of them we eventually realized through trail & error. Having specific roles re: finances is also an effective strategy. Newlyweds -- take heed!

Yay pan gravy! I like to do it all in the same pan, so I can capture the most flavor. I like to add a minced shallot to the sucs, saute that until it's fragrant, then deglaze the pan with a splash of wine. Sometimes I'll add some milk, cream or stock, but usually the wine sauce does the trick.
I just recieved one of their Master Cards in the mail today and I know I never applied for it. It is issued by MetaBank who issues the majority of Pre-Paid debit & Gift Cards on the market today.
They are also affilated with PayPal; MetaBank is the listed issuing bank ont eh back of my PayPal debit card and I can only wonder if this is where NetSpend got my information from?
I was surprised at the recipt of this card so I went online to poke around a bit and found your blog and wanted to share my new experiance with these jokers.
Anyway I fileld a complaint with the Federal Trade Comission and Division Of Banking Regulations in Texas; where NetSpend is located and in Iowa where MetaBank is located at.

i just want to add one on the list! You can use rubber bands to throw cards! well, it is not necessary but it is kinda for entertainment purposes.
I've begun using less, and I notice my clothes smell less. It's kind of the opposite of what you'd think would happen, but it works. Great post!

Uh, guys, "learnt" IS in fact, acceptable English. It is like "burnt," "knelt," "spilt," etc.
Perhaps research would be a good idea next time.

A chef taught me his secret to no-lump gravy: Strain it.
I simmer the giblets, neck, etc. in water with a bit of celery as a gravy extender. Also use this to baste the bird.

I'm not sure if you aimed that at me or not, but I'm solidly on the side of the depositors, not the banks.
The banks play a cruel, twisted game—but it's a game with rules. If you learn the rules, it's a game you can win.
That's not a just result—there'll be other poor folks out there getting screwed—but at least you won't be getting screwed yourself.
