  • A Frugal Resource: The Community College   16 years 49 weeks ago

Some of the community colleges with better resources give you access to their athletic facilities. At my local community college, students could register for a 1-unit P.E. course that was essentially going to the gym. This meant that in addition to my computer design course, I could spend an extra $20 and have a gym at my disposal for the entire semester. Worth checking out if you're signing up for a class anyway!

Re: discounts - this also applies to anywhere you can get a student discount (restaurants, stores, etc.)! My community college offers students a free bus pass.

And for you parents of high schoolers, check to see if there's a dual enrollment program. If your student is especially gifted, they may be able to complete some required courses while in HS or over the summer for free! Because it's college-level, there might be automatic credit transfer (usually true if your kid's state school-bound), saving you $$ later on!

  • Hey Boss, Please Don’t Bother Me, I’m Daydreaming   16 years 49 weeks ago

Everyone with an intact brain daydreams, and daydreams are an extension of our personality and thought process. As such, they'll be good and bad. But even daydreams that don't seem productive on the surface have a variety of benefits---they remind us of goals, personal and professional, both long term and short term; they provide stress relief; they aid in planning and analyzing. And that's just the beginning.
I'm glad this study came out--my book on the topic was just published: Daydreams at Work: Wake Up Your Creative Powers. If you're interested, you can read more about it at DaydreamsAtWork.com
    Thanks.

  • Would you get rid of credit cards if stores give more discounts to customers who pay cash ?   16 years 49 weeks ago

It depends on if the discounts/rewards were more than the 3% that my credit card currently gives.

Some places give you a cash discount because they're dodging taxes. Others are laundering money, and don't accept credit at all.

I am not the author but I do have a credit card that gives 5% back on gas purchases. It is a Platinum Visa with Pentagon Federal Credit Union.

I create my own cash discounts routinely.
Small purchases automatically get paid in cash.
On medium sized purchases, knowing the retailer is paying a 2-3% credit card processing fee, and I have a 3% cashback card, I usually ask if they will give me a discount for cash. If they offer me 6% off or better, I dig out the greenbacks - If not, they get plastic.
I always use the credit cards for big purchase so that; a) I don’t need to carry huge amounts of cash, and b) I get the extra protection the credit card company adds to the sale.

Quote: " I always go to the one that does not have a cash price because I get 5% back on gasoline purchases on my credit card"

Hope you can tell me where you get that....I had one that gave 2.5% back, but then they changed it...just steer me in the right direction, maybe I'll find it...

  • Debit Or Credit? Which One Should You Choose At The Checkout?   16 years 49 weeks ago

Actually you can get cash back using a credit card.

For over 15 years I used a Discover card to get $20 cash back DAILY at a grocery store where I worked. Not only is the cash free from charges but I was earning points on it as it counted as a purchase.

My new Sam's-branded Discover card allows me to get cash back ($60 at Safeway or $100 at Sam's) however last year they changed their policy of paying points on the cash back.

To top it all off, my $1,000 yearly check from Sam's is non-taxable income!

  • Save Money by Rekindling the Art of Reusing your Stuff   16 years 49 weeks ago

When traveling, I keep a small, recycled plastic bag in my toiletries kit. At the end of my stay, I take the partially used soap home in the bag. Once back at the ranch, I have a soft mesh bag that matches my bathroom decor. (It originally held something like garlic from the 99 cent store.) I drop in the soap pieces, tie up the bag with a slipknot and hang it from the shower caddy. I haven't bought soap in years and get a kick out of using up bits of soap that would otherwise go to waste...If you're not a traveler, the soft mesh bag is great for using up all those slivers of bar soap.

  • Would you get rid of credit cards if stores give more discounts to customers who pay cash ?   16 years 49 weeks ago

Yes. If there was a choice to pick that or not

I could front up to $500 in cash to pay for something but anything higher and I feel uncomfortable carrying around that kind of money

For restaurants it's a good idea. I've seen that before

Do you avoid stores that have different sets of prices for cash and card customers?

Fine discussion if you have a choice, but what about us poor people? If we have a credit card at all, it's just for emergencies because it has a high interest rate and no rewards, so we do everything with cash already. A CASH DISCOUNT WOULD BE A GREAT HELP FOR THE POOR!

  • Frequent Flyer Junkie? Manage your Miles Here   16 years 49 weeks ago

Well I dumped Bank O America a few months ago and got a Chase account. They offered $175 for opening a new account at a new branch. Hello. I got a miles debit/credit card. So, I choose credit and get the miles. So far, I have a vacation to Australia planned. I dumped Bank 0 America, because they offer the "keep the change" so it rounds the purchase to the whole amout and put into a saving account. The after 6 months they start charging you fee for the account. Very sneaky/dirty thing to do. Bye Bye BAC.

  • On Choosing and Defending Your Luxuries   16 years 49 weeks ago

....and of course we are talking about young- to middle-aged adults here. It becomes more difficult to define (and meet) needs for children and the elderly, as well as others with special needs.

It's true that many of those living in tents in underdeveloped countries are children, but the mortality rates are so appallingly high (especially for infants), that I don't think we can say that their needs are met in even the most basic sense.

My needs as the parent of 2 small children would include such things essential to their emotional development as a modicum of stability and security. Needs would also include things essential to their safety, such as an apartment without peeling lead paint. It's pretty hard for families of small children to meet those needs for free.

  • On Choosing and Defending Your Luxuries   16 years 49 weeks ago

There are even people who live like that.

Yes, but they have a short life expectancy, so they don't live like that for long (usually). Malnutrition and infectious diseases are major problems for homeless people, and others on the very edge. So you might upgrade your definition of "necessity" to include sufficient nutrition and minimal health care to reach average life expectancy.

I agree that those things, if not free, would be very cheap to acquire in our society for most of those unencumbered by mental illness, chronic medical conditions, addiction, or other serious problems.

  • Would you get rid of credit cards if stores give more discounts to customers who pay cash ?   16 years 49 weeks ago

There's one place near us with a cash discount, and by "cash" they mean cash or debit card. So you still get the convenience and get to keep your cash safely in the bank. I use cash or a debit card there.

It's true that although merchants lose more for a given purchase using credit, they tend to get more purchases when they take credit cards. And nowadays when everyone in generation Y uses credit cards for everything, everyone really has to keep taking credit cards. My local food coop wrote a long article explaining how it really doesn't make much difference to them which payment method you use, saying that checks and cash aren't as great as you might expect.

I currently use credit cards that give me 3% back on gas, groceries, drug stores and home improvement stores and 1% on everything else. A 3% reward is more than a 5-cent discount when gas is $2 per gallon, so I usually use credit. But if it cost the same or less to use cash, I would make the switch. Most credit card companies are slime, and I'd be happy not to give them 1-2% of my purchase price.

Wouldn't ever happen. Stores brag that every customer who signs for a card brings in $300 over a cash shopper in a year. Interest aside, card shoppers are simply less careful where their money goes.

  • Would you get rid of credit cards if stores give more discounts to customers who pay cash ?   16 years 49 weeks ago

I've been using a debit card exclusively for about 10 years. Many card issuers offer buyer protection on purchases. This can be an invaluable benefit. Using cash to pay for big-ticket items can be risky. And consider how many retail chains have gone under recently, and continue to fail, often leaving buyers in the lurch.

  • Would you get rid of credit cards if stores give more discounts to customers who pay cash ?   16 years 49 weeks ago

I'm willing to bet that although merchants are paying a fee to the credit card companies in order to process those transactions, many retailers are still making more - on the whole - from credit card purchases than from cash. When a consumer pays cash, it's a set, finite amount. If they don't have the cash in their wallet, they're not going to buy that extra $5 item in the checkout line. But when a consumer pulls out the plastic, that $10 extra something doesn't seem like so much, because they don't feel its impact so deeply.

So while some smaller retailers may offer those cash incentives, I doubt we'll see larger businesses giving up those extra profits.
