  • 25 Things to Never Pay Full Price For   14 years 3 weeks ago

Don't forget the value of discount theaters! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discount_theater) There's one about half an hour from where I live, yet the price of admissions, concessions and gas is STILL cheaper than Regal cinemas, about equidistant from where I live. I've seen other theaters offer "all you can watch" specials on Tuesdays, where you pay $2 to get in and watch as many movies as you care to through the day. If the intent is to entertain the kiddos, many theaters offer $1 kids' movies during the summer.

  • Ask the Readers: Have You Ever Heard of IRAs or Roth IRAs?   14 years 3 weeks ago

I know that both are retirement accounts. We do not have them. My husband is one of the few people left with a defined pension plan(railroad). As his spouse I am entitled to a half pension when he retires.

That is also why it's so important to be careful about what you write in your emails! Everybody keeps them, and they can come back to bite you years later. A professor in college told us that everything written in an email (or text message for that matter), should be something you wouldn't be ashamed of or in trouble for if it was read on the 6 o'clock news!

I have one of each type of account!

Like with anything it's best to read the the fine print! Rather than buying on impulse, take a little time to find the answers to questions covered in this article. Make a quick checklist and use it!

Roth IRa's are a great planning tool. My 18-year old son has one too!

  • 6 Awesome Credit Card Tricks That Will Save You Money   14 years 4 weeks ago

All the above tricks seem a bit risky as there is a fair chance that the bank will bump you off. I would advise caution to people before they start using these tricks. They can lead you to have you card cancelled by the card or getting into a very stressful situation. However, if you are a good negotiator and can push you way through - go for it.

  • Ask the Readers: Have You Ever Heard of IRAs or Roth IRAs?   14 years 4 weeks ago

When I was in college I took a personal finance class, where we were encouraged to put $1,000 a year into a Roth IRA starting when we graduated (at around age 22). Unfortunately, I didn't have a job that paid full-time wages until nearly 30, but at that point I started the $1,000 Roth IRA savings plan.

  • Where Did Your iPod Come From? The Story of Stuff   14 years 4 weeks ago

This video is filled with LIES! How do you think people hold jobs if consumers aren't buying things? This video should be stripped from our schools. This video is nothing but liberal propaganda at its worst!

  • Should You be Ashamed to be on Public Assistance?   14 years 4 weeks ago

Only the disabled should be getting any assistance from the government! To people getting food stamps and checks that are not disabled are FAILURES! The money should go to improving schools, building our infastructure, building hospitals, and etc. What else do you call people that can't support themselves while millions of other Americans are busting their butt working hard 8+ hours for their own pay, putting food on their own table, making sure their kids have clothing and education, and providing a roof over their own head? Welfare recipients should be ashamed of themselves taking money out of someone's hard earned paycheck because they wouldn't get off their asses and work! Also people complaining about the dirty looks...you deserve every one of them because it's their and my paycheck being used to fund your food stamps when they have their own kids and selves to take care of!

  • Security Breach Puts 50,000 Credit Card Holders at Risk   14 years 4 weeks ago

Well I'm sure glad that I don't have any credit cards! I will warn my family and friends that do however. This was for credit cards only and not debit cards, right?

  • Are Groupon Getaways a Good Idea?   14 years 4 weeks ago

I had a great experience buying a trip from LivingSocial. When i was having trouble with my credit card (more like Capital One's customer service), LivingSocial worked with me to use a loophole in the system to extend the expiration date of the deal. We happened to pick an all-inclusive trip, so our perks didn't really encourage extra spending. But the one thing I did learn was to bring more cash! ATM fees are very pricey.

I have a traditional ira and a roth ira. I hope to not use them for a long time.

  • 5 Reasons Not to Delete Your Emails   14 years 4 weeks ago

Keeping e-mails is a great idea. When I was going through my divorce and my ex had been cheating on me he felt a bit guilty and he promised to pay for certain things. Now years later he simply does not want to pay. The judge said the e-mails are a binding contract.

  • How to Answer 23 of the Most Common Interview Questions   14 years 4 weeks ago

All of these questions are familiar and I've seen most/all of them at some time or another. I just this minute came out of an interview with many of these questions. Here's what really paid off: cut and past the questions and fill in each with your 1-3 sentence max answer for each. Depending upon the setting, it will be perfectly fitting to refer to your answers. I think my interviewers appreciated that I had these questions ready, that I had taken the time to consider them, and that they were at the ready when I needed them.

Also be cautious of using vouchers while on a trip. They may save you some money, but if you have to take a big bite out of your precious vacation time to get to them, they may not be such a great deal.
When we were in London last year, we had a voucher for a restaurant. We probably burned an extra hour getting to and from this restaurant from where we had been sightseeing. We DID do some interesting walking sightseeing on the way to and from, so that offset it somewhat. YMMV. Just remember that you're removing some of the flexibility and spontaneity that make exploring a new city fun.

  • Pay Yourself First: What It Means, and How to Do It   14 years 4 weeks ago

I use an automated transfer funds monthly to my TD Ameritrade brokerage- I use them because they have no commission costs on a range of low fee ETFs. I use asset allocation to decide where to invest the money- automatically doing a bit of rebalancing each month.

  • 15 Alternative Uses for Nail Polish   14 years 4 weeks ago

About #9, just don't. Nail polish is NOT always non-toxic. If I ever used polish to close a wound I'd end up covered in blisters and rashes.

The rest of list is awesome.

  • Extreme Couponing? 5 Reasons Why I’ll Pass.   14 years 4 weeks ago

As Jay points out, coupons are almost entirely for processed food. And lots of the excess food couponers buy get donated to food shelters. Donating is great, but when you are donating crappy food, it's kind of not so great. Poor people deserve better than the highly refined, high fat, high sodium junk couponers cast off when they have made their score and are done with it.

  • Tasty, Healthy Breakfast Cookies With Chocolate-Covered Espresso Beans   14 years 4 weeks ago

These were awesome! Subbed dried blueberries for the raisins, added some chopped almonds and wheat bran as well. This is now something I will always have on hand! Even my 2 yr old is asking for more "cookies" :)

  • Ask the Readers: Have You Ever Heard of IRAs or Roth IRAs?   14 years 4 weeks ago

Yes, I've heard of both the IRA and Roth IRA. I have several IRA accounts and retirement can't get here soon enough.

  • DIY Shampoo: The Baking Soda Experiment   14 years 4 weeks ago

I just tried this for the first time. I was afraid to try it because I have VERY fine and thin hair, and I thought the abrasiveness of the baking soda might do alot of damage to my hair. I have to say that after one use of the baking soda followed by the vinegar I am sold on this. My hair is shinier, a little lighter, which I like, the light highlights my hair has naturally are more pronounced, and it feels FULLER. It was a little harder to comb out than it is with the gobs of pantene conditioner I usually use, but only a little. Thats one thing I was afraid of, but I didn't seem to pull more hair out while combing than I did with the Pantene, so that was good. I am definitely planning on continuing this.

  • Confessions of a Minimalist: 9 Reasons I Miss My Stuff   14 years 4 weeks ago

You do not have to let go of virtually everything to be a minimalist. I think this illustrates letting go of more than your optimum about of things in the quest for minimalism. I imagine it takes some trial and error to find that balance of stuff that is not too much and not too little.

My vision of my minimalist house still includes many things I love, like my bento boxes. Yes, I could eat off the same one plate everyday, but how much more fun is it to eat out of a two tiered box with hello kitty on it. If I did not use the boxes regularly, then I would want their shelf space. Minimalism to me, is getting rid of all the kitchen junk I rarely use so that I can get to my bento boxes and more easily be able to use them. I want to cut out all the junk in my house, that keeps me from what I love and enjoy in life.

  • In Two-Income Households, Can Making More Put Us Further Behind?   14 years 4 weeks ago

There's no doubt the noughties property bubble and resulting high cost of housing is a major reason both partners need to work these days.

At the same time, it seems to me we live in an instant gratification culture, where we're encouraged to live beyond our means at every turn. As Greece and many other EU countries are finding out, it's impossible to live on the never never indefinitely.
