  • How to Get the Most Out of Your Gmail Account   16 years 9 weeks ago

My favorite tools within Gmail are the chat function and the labels.  The chat feature also can be set up to automatically save chats, so if someone sends you an important link or what have you, you can go back and find it later.

It's also great how the entire google account is connected to blogger, google alerts, and so on.  My favorite tool right now is Google Reader.  It saves so much time if you have to keep up with blogs and news.

  • How to Get Laid Off: A Step-By-Step Guide   16 years 9 weeks ago

To add, I wasn't laid off, I was "terminated" and told it was due to budget contraints, as stated in my termination papers. At the end of my hearing, as they didn't have any reason to get rid of me beside the fact they wanted to save money, the manager's last ditch effort was "sleeping" on the job and it worked for them. So I agree with everyone who disagrees with these suggestions, bad idea and will only hurt you in the long run with claiming benefits.

  • How to Get Laid Off: A Step-By-Step Guide   16 years 9 weeks ago

Yeah, sleeping on the job will be the go-to excuse for your former employer to not be obligated to pay your unemployment compensation. That BS excuse was used on me in a UC benefits hearing and my benefits were taken away without the slightest bit of evidence against me. The mere mention of the act was enough to convince the state that money could be saved.

  • Ask the Readers: How Do You Watch Your Movies?   16 years 9 weeks ago

We do Netflix (with Watch Instantly filling in the days we don't have discs) and hulu.com for tv shows. We occasionally see movies in theaters- usually flicks we want to see in 3D. Overall we don't spend too much time watching tv/movies, but then we aren't paying much for it either :)

Three of my children and my wife have telecommuted. Each gets more work done and have really enjoyed it. Eventually companies that have a large percentage of their employees telecommuting will have such an advantage in lower costs (not having to provide office space, better retention rates) that other companies will be forced to embrace it.

Gasoline at $4, $5 a gallon or more will start the ball rolling.

  • Real Estate Agents: Do We Really Need Them?   16 years 9 weeks ago

We just recently bought our first house and our real estate agent was a LIFE SAVER.  He saved us money, made sure that we understood everything that we were signing, and made sure all the paperwork got signed and sent to the right place.  I would never buy a home without an agent, even if it was our 20th home!

  • Homebrewed Beer: Make Your Own and Save Money?   16 years 9 weeks ago

Consider all grain brewing - where your crushing the grains yourself rather than buying extract.  It can save you even more money and drive down your per case cost event further.  In fact, you may want to consider kegging your beer.  If this is a long term hobby you can buy Cornelius kegs to store your home brew and over the course of time this will be more cost effective than bottling!

I'm a former homebrewer and had an all grain setup and your definitely right ... buying on Craiglist and other such sites is a great way to go.  Somebody got a steal on my equipment (much of it customized ... as I was doing 10 gallon batches).

Anways .. interesting article and good luck with the hobby!  It's a great way to save money on beer and best of all ... with time and practice, you should be drinking much better beer!

  • 3 Reasons Why Keeping Your "Latte Factor" Will Help You Save Money   16 years 9 weeks ago

I think it depends on whether your goal is to "become rich" or to live well.  If the former is true, then everything you're saying is right on the money.  If the latter is true, I agree that everyone deserves to have a latte factor if their situation allows.

  • 11 Small Ways to Save Big on Ink   16 years 9 weeks ago

The tip to just not print has saved me quite a bit of resources the past 5 years, since my lousy printer ran out of ink and stopped working reliably.

Even working as a graphic designer, it's incredible how much I'm able to not have to print things out if the option doesn't present itself to me.

To me one of the biggest wastes of paper and ink are map directions. I personally write it out on a piece of scrap paper (at one point I spent a boring afternoon cutting up old cereal boxes into index cards), and writing it out actually helps me remember the directions while i'm driving (i.e. I hardly even need the card at all). I save on paper AND ink.

This is good for corporate as well. Save rent and employees can be rewarded more and or can be invested in telecommunication technologies like CISCO TELEPRESENCE.

Do a quick Google search online. If you really want, you can find eco-friendly fonts. For example, there's an eco-friendly version of Times New Roman.

  • Make Easy Money and Learn a Thing or Two About Website Design   16 years 9 weeks ago

I worked for Usertesting last semester (I'm in college and have a parttime job) and the extra money was awesome. I was not able to participate this semester due to school but I will be right back in the game this summer. If you are a stay at home mom or dont have a job, this can be a lucrative job. If you sign up, give yourself time to do it. I just did not have time this semester. But summer time is a great time to get started!

I have an HP printer at home that keeps telling me that my ink is low, but I still get nice prints when there is just a miniscule amount of ink. To print in color, I change the font color on the document (highlight the text and change the color to something that isn't black) - this does annoy my kids sometimes, especially if they need to print a paper for school but teachers have never counted off for colorfulness.

  • Save the Planet: Work at Home   16 years 9 weeks ago

In this economy, people are afraid of losing their jobs if they don't put in enough face time. So even if you are working 20 hr days at home, the guy working 8 hrs at the office with lunch/smoke breaks is seen as "better."

My high-tech company used to allow telecommuting and people loved it. Now they disallow it (and no, management didn't change) and people are very unhappy and migrating to other shops around town.

  • 11 Small Ways to Save Big on Ink   16 years 9 weeks ago

#9: Honestly, which ink-jet printers allow you to use up the ink (or even more than 1/2) w/ out doing some hack to the printer that may render it useless? Or which printers now allow you to print in another color even if one you are not using is low?

  • Save the Planet: Work at Home   16 years 9 weeks ago

I am actually more productive at home because people are not coming up to my desk to request things and breaking my concentration.  When they send me an email I have a record of their request and queue it up and work through it.  Currently I work at home once a week and it works out pretty well.  I am a software engineer so it is possible, but for some occupations it is not possible.

  • Ask the Readers: How Do You Watch Your Movies?   16 years 9 weeks ago

Mostly Netflix, altho during Oscar season I'll go to the theatres for matinees only. Our public library's DVDs are too scratched - I always have problems watching them!

  • Save the Planet: Work at Home   16 years 9 weeks ago

yeah that's great, but i have yet, in 20 years, worked in a place that encouraged telecommuting or looked on it favorably.  most bosses still require ass-in-seat, whether you're getting more accomplished than you would at home or not.

We use a variety of programs to watch our movies, mainly through the Xbox 360.  Of course there's Netflix with instant streaming for starterse, as others have mentioned.  But we also use a program called Tversity (http://tversity.com/download/) to stream anything from my desktop computer to my TV.  In addition, we use a program called PlayOn (http://www.playon.tv/playon) which also allows access to Hulu, Netflix, and a handful of other Internet content.  All are great cheap resources to get the most we can for the buck.
