I knew a cop who took pictures after crime scenes, he told me when he was a cop they poored coke over the blood to make it go away. They probably don't do it any more he has been retired for a while. But he was a king county police for 34 years.

The Victoria Falls are located on the border Zambia and Zimbabwe. "Deep in Southern Zambia" is misleading and unfair to tourism operators and businesses located on the Zimbabwean side.

  • The Best and Worst Places to Stash Cash in Your Home   11 years 11 weeks ago

I have been broken into several times. The ONLY time the thieves went looking and searching was when they were known to us (our neighbours 3 doors down) and therefore knew (or thought they did) that we would have a stash. We didn't. In my experience (4 break-ins in different houses and different areas of the country) they do not spend long at all, 10 mins tops and they do not search. The second they think they might be disturbed they will scarper. They have odd ways of doing things. I was confused by their behaviour; I had a little fire proof lock box which you can easily pick up and carry. Instead of just lifting it up and carting it off and worrying about opening it later, they dumped it in a bowl of water (??) and opened it. Conversely they saw my £600+ camera opened the bag, fiddled with it and left it. But what was in my fireproof box were my wedding rings from my previous marriage, valued at £20 each which they took!! Dumbasses (had a good laugh at the fact that they have shot themselves in the foot for the sake of £40!! So anyway, like I said in my experience they do not ransack a house unless they have reason to suspect you are hiding something... So best advice is...actively seek to get friendly with your neighbours. They will keep their eye on your house, you can give them permission to park on your drive when you're away and if you don't get on they won't think anything to turning a blind eye to unusual behaviour or if you really don't get on, you will find yourselves being victimised by them.

    Definitely

  • Walk, walk, walk, walk, walk   11 years 11 weeks ago

Brilliant article! We definitely need to walk more in the United States.

With the introduction of pedometers like FitBit and Jawbone, people are finding walking to be more like a game - which is spearheading Americans to get out and move those feet.

    And, it's about time!

  • The Only Fruits and Veggies Worth Growing Yourself   11 years 11 weeks ago

I have a small garden patch, only about 60' square, but I try and fill it up with as many growies as I can, and as many Varieties as I can, every year. Sometimes, I get a bumper crop of something and other stuff is a bust, but next year, maybe that turns around. Gardening is an ADVENTURE! A new one every day! New discoveries, fresh choices, I LOVE it! It also feeds us through the winter. If there is over abundance, I have friends or relatives that are always willing to help me out with it, or I put up a free ad, set the stuff on the curb and it ALWAYS disappears! Why not grow all you can as often as you can, and feed someone else as well as yourself? Gardening should be self-less, not self-ish!

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Feel Optimistic About Your Finances in 2015?   11 years 11 weeks ago

Yes, I do. I think I have a strong plan in place based on my new year's resolutions and have built a reasonable budget based on all of the data I collected from mint last year. I know it is early in the year, but I'm feeling pretty confident that I can stick to my budget and achieve my financial goals. Maybe you should have an 'ask the readers' check in in a few months :)

  • 10 Homemade Baking Mixes That Save Money and Time   11 years 11 weeks ago

It's a shame the pancake mix is vegan. Milk and Eggs really add to the body of your pancakes, and while I like this idea, I won't bother to click through any of these, since the first one I did was pointlessly vegan. I'll go find other recipes.

Thanks for the good idea though!

  • Getting by without a job, part 4--get free stuff   11 years 11 weeks ago

Foraging, getting stuff from the wild, is NOT a good practice, given the fact that there are enough poor and unemployed to cause edible species of plants and fungi to disappear entirely in places where this is practiced. The exception is sustainable harvesting where the harvest area can be carefully controlled, but this is not usually the case where people do not control (own) the land.

  • How to Prevent Plant Theft   11 years 11 weeks ago

Some people have been stealing our beautiful big hibiscus blooms of varied colours for the past one month. And this is killing our plants. They come almost daily when we are at work. We suspected these particular thieves because we have seen them stealing fruits, vegetables and mango leaves from other neighbours. And now they are stealing our flowers for use as their daily offering to their gods. The irony of it all. So cheapskate.

Today, our immediate neighbour came by and what she told us confirmed our suspicion. Can't do much. We are still trying to do something about it. Like putting signs in that particular language so as to let them know we know who are the thieves.

And by the way, dogs won't be of help, if these thieves are the neighbours because the dogs would have got used to them already, as in my case.

  • Fresh Fruits and Vegetables, By the Month   11 years 11 weeks ago

In the age of the internet ignorance is a choice. While culinarily they might be prepared as vegetables, botanically/scientifically, tomatoes, eggplant, cucumbers, squash, and peppers (bell and spicy) are all FRUITS. Appreciate the work done with the list but please stop spreading ignorance. Poor kids being taught the same thing in schools by grown adults who don't know any better.

I was about 36 or 37 when I came to the same realization. After much effort, things began to fall in place and I am finally on the path I wished for. The key was getting out of my own way, as I was/am my own worst enemy. At least 99% of my problems were self inflicted...

  • Did Your Parents Give You a Whole Life Insurance Policy? Here's What to Do With It.   11 years 11 weeks ago

Use cheap term insurance to replace you income for your family in the event of your untimely death during your prime earning years.
Use permanent life insurance with "paid up additions" rider to create your own financing tool for today and for retirement income options later on down the road.
Anyone who condemns one in favor of the other is not looking for your best interests, they are looking to for the sales commission.

  • Going Without Health Insurance in 2015? Here's What It'll Cost You   11 years 11 weeks ago

This was quite informative and super easy to follow. I am very blessed to have decent coverage for my husband, but I know several who are not covered and who will now have to balance the fine with the actual money they *may* lay out over the course of a year. There was nothing "affordable" for them to purchase via the affordable health care offered. I will gladly share this with my readers! Thanks.
