  • The vicious Home Rental Scam – don’t get conned.   10 years 48 weeks ago

This is horrible! I rented a house from Craigslist ad and the scammer met me at the property and signed the lease I moved in immediately and started services in my name. I was just contacted by the police and the actual property management company at the house. They made me pack and move out immediately. Do you know if I have any rights?

Travel! I splurge by taking 1-2 vacations a year. They're not always big, long, epic, exotic, faraway things but even just a short jaunt can recharge the batteries!

List is skeptical because the Turtle Beach X12s WILL start to break after <1 year. If you don't mind rebuying them, then go right ahead, but I suggest investing in something that will actually last.

  • 7 Times to Avoid Debit or Credit Cards   10 years 48 weeks ago

I avoid cc shopping when I crave chocolate because I figure I'm not buying it for valid reasons and I'll regret the purchase later.
Since putting a serious dent in my cc balances, I also have been waiting a week before putting something on them to make sure I really want/need whatever it is.

I love handbags! I am looking for the perfect one! I am 66 years old and still haven't found it yet! LOL My splurges on purses are my favorite thrift stores or yard sales. when I can get a bag I think I like in the 99 cent bin my splurge is perfect! If I don't like it, or it doesn't work how I think it should for me, then I give it back to the store I bought it from "without guilt"

  • 6 Reasons Introverts Make the Best Employees   10 years 48 weeks ago

Great piece! Next up, do a piece on why introverts make the best bosses. I got a link somewhere that says extroverts are better at supervising low-motivated people but introverts are better at getting the most out of high-motivated teams.

  • The Dirty Secrets of Credit Cards   10 years 48 weeks ago

Yes, and Amex has the industries highest transaction fees which is why many merchants do not accept it.

Also, the regular Amex charge cards have hefty annual fees.

But in the end, do not discount cc company profits from transaction fees, they can be considerable and potentially more profitable then interest charges.

Someone carrying a balance of $10,000 paying 10% interest is not as profitable as someone spending $5000/mo and paying off the balance.

  • Buy This — Not That — at the Farmer's Market   10 years 48 weeks ago

I completely disagree with all of your "skip" items!

    6. Honey: Local honey is great for allergies. If you know your farmers (which is the point of a farmers market) you will know which ones are producing their own. And you know it's honey, which is more than you can say for store-bought.

    7. Cheese: I personally know several of the cheese makers, and their hand crafted product is better than any you can buy at the store. Not to say that I don't go to our local cheese store, but why pick on the cheese maker? Why not just go to WalMart if you're going to make that argument?

    8. Fresh Meat: The farmers at the farmers market I go to keep their meat in a deep freeze on site. You know it is Grassfed and from humanely raised animals (most offer tours of their farm). Excellent quality.

    9. Unpasteurized Dairy: The farmers market is often a drop off point for raw milk herd shares. No need to be squeamish about raw milk if you have done your homework and again know your farmer.

    10. Herbs: I'd like to see someone grow the variety or quantity of herbs necessary to make pesto and other summer dishes in a windowsill.

    11. Juice: There are many health advantages of juicing. Although there aren't any juicers at the farmers markets I frequent, I wouldn't hesitate to get it if I knew the producer.

    12. Prepared meals: Farmers markets are often the best chance a food truck has of making a profit in our area. And yes, you just bought the ingredients to make your own meals - but you can do that the other six days of the week. Use one day to rest :-)

I have found that regular meditation has helped me be able to absorb information I am learning more. I've always had a very busy mind, which has led to a terrible memory but since meditating more regularly, I've noticed that I seem to retain more of what I read and hear than before.

  • 12 Crucial Things Homebuyers Overlook at Open Houses   10 years 48 weeks ago

Come to think of it I have not actually had to knock on doors when checking out a new neighborhood, I have just chatted with people who are out in their yards or nearby. But I have never found that people are shy about sharing the kinds of details I mentioned with a potential new neighbor. People love to talk about their neighborhoods and they are usually very interested in who is going to move in to an empty property, especially if they live next door.

  • You're Washing Your Clothes Too Often! (What to Do Instead)   10 years 48 weeks ago

You should NEVER be showering 3 times a day. Wastes water - wipe down with damp cloth dipped in lavender water. Only shower once. Moisten your wrists and back of neck with damp cloth. Keep spray bottle handy to help cool down. Wear a hat or linen clothing. Perspiration is nature's way of cooling you down. Showering dries out your skin and helps you age sooner. The soap lotions and potions add to pointing the water. Keep your hair short. Drink tea slightly warmer than ambient heat to keep cool.

  • 14 Free or Cheap Toys That Will Make Your Kid Smarter   10 years 48 weeks ago

Our options were even more basic. Pencils and paper, some seeds and a place to plant them, a roll of masking tape, safety scissors and thin cardboard, a library card, strips of newspaper and flour paste for paper mache, a big cardboard box. When they got older simple hand tools and scrap lumber. I made the kids capes from scrap fabric and masks from milk jugs. They took it from there.
