  • 19 Frugal Ways to Entertain Teenagers   10 years 50 weeks ago

Thanks for this post. I'm sorry to say it, but I feel like it will only work for some teenagers...
A friend of mine sent her daughter across the country for a four day stay at our house. My kids are all easy teens who are pretty easily entertained and did their best to make her feel at home: they tried a movie, the Wii (group video game), a board game... None of it worked. Then we had her signed up for a morning course of windsurfing (as we live by the seaside) but she has talked her way out of that too! To be honest, I don't know what to do with her and there are still two and a half days left. Any ideas?

  • 10 Homemade Liqueurs to Bottle for Tasty Gifts   10 years 50 weeks ago

One quart of vodka (750 ml will do) 1/2 cup clear corn syrup, one teaspoon bitters (to taste) 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon anise flavoring (again, to taste) and a couple of drops of green food coloring. Absinthe, or 'Le Fe Verte'. This is designed to be watered down before drinking, so enjoy.

  • 5 Inspiring People Who Each Paid Off Over $100,000 in Debt   10 years 50 weeks ago

I think many are missing the point. They lose focus when they hear inheritance. But they don't realize it took willpower and dedication to apply this new found money to their debt, instead of treating themselves(vacations, new cars, TV, etc.). I am in the process of rebuilding my future. It is hard to stay focused on paying down debt, when things keep popping up to eat up my emergency fund.

  • 7 Things You Need to Know Before Buying Your First House   10 years 50 weeks ago

Great post. One thing you probably did the second time (although you didn't mention it) was to get pre-approved for a loan before going house hunting to help spread out the stress and paperwork (among other things).

  • Do You Practice Math When You Leave a Tip?   10 years 50 weeks ago

Maybe said server should get a job where a bad day doesn't mean less money for them. Really, though, I detest this tipping practice. I'd much rather have a higher bill that I am expecting than all this arbitrary tipping. What really is annoying is all the people who aren't paid three bucks an hour trying to get tips these days. They get nada from me in their little tip jars.

  • Sun Screens Can Really Cost You – By the Ounce or By the Tumor   10 years 50 weeks ago

Suncreen works well on me. I have read many magazines and books saying that it helps avoid getting sunburn and other skin diseases. Good Lord, i don't want skin cancer. LOL

  • Ask the Readers: What is Your Dream Job?   10 years 50 weeks ago

Dream job has always involved helping the community and making a difference to the environment. And so with that being said. I am working towards my R.N lic, once I have been received in a hospital setting. I would like to take my savings and open a camp site area, for a All children. All for the purposes of keeping our street kids in a safe place rather than out in the streets were more than likely to get into some trouble and possibly cause tax payers more money. The Dream is to make it a successful franchise for every city or/and State.

  • 5 Ways to Stay Productive While Working From Home   10 years 50 weeks ago

I've worked from home for over 8 years now, and one of the main things I have found help me to stay on track is keep a list of to-do's, then set aside one hour and get through them. I reward myself with some type of a break, then set the timer for another block of time. I am the type of person who likes to race against the clock, so it actually helps me be productive to see how much I can get done before the timer goes off. :-)

One of the benefits of working at home is that most of the time your performance is based on productivity, so when I cross everything off my list for the day, I'm done, regardless of what time it is.

  • 11 Life Skills That Are Now Completely Obsolete   10 years 50 weeks ago

    1. Paper maps are far superior to GPS.
    2. Proper grammar skills are essential to effective communication, which is what talking and writing are supposed to be.
    3. Ironing means you don't look like you slept in your clothes. (Do I sound like my mother yet?)
    4. How sad that we've got generations of kids who will not be able to read their grandparents' and great-grandparents' love letters, war letters, diaries, etc., because they never learned to read or write cursive.

I totally agree with you regarding GPS. I don't have it - nor do I have a cell phone - but I've driven with friends whose GPS talks to them and it drives me nuts. One of the advantages to one's children growing up is that there's nobody talking when I'm driving and I really, really like that.

I'm learning how to sew. I've made one dress thus far. There are similar dresses in stores, but they are more expensive and made of rayon or polyester. I love being able to pick my own fabric. I enjoyed the increased creativity that making this dress provided.

I was scammed by a fake Mystery Shopping company that was referred through a legit employment service I was signed up with and got weekly email opportunities from. • Build a Bed for Cheap (and Look Good Doing It)   10 years 51 weeks ago

I built my own bed with a set of plans I found on the Internet. I didn't save any cash doing it. If you don't already have the tools you will need it gets very expensive very quickly. Furniture building isn't as easy as a lot of DIY and frugality articles would have you believe.
