  • netSpend: The Story of the Visa Debit Card We Did Not Apply For   11 years 33 weeks ago

My husband just received an "unapplied for" debit visa in the mail from Green.dot - We were very concerned about identity theft - when he tried to contact Green.dot he was unable to get through to a live person without entering in the account number (which he did not want to do in case it activated the account) or entering in his social security number (right!)
We are definitely going to report them. I thought companies were not allowed to give out information like social security numbers!

  • Homemade Dog Food: Recipe and Cost   11 years 33 weeks ago

I wish I could feed my dog raw but currently she hates it! It was the strangest thing to find out, however she was on kibble for the first 6 years of her life. I currently cook for her because she thinks its human food and I can slowly add bits of slightly undercooked meat in there till eventually she's on a straight raw diet!

  • 12 Grammar Mistakes That Are Making You Look Stupid   11 years 33 weeks ago

Sorry to disappoint you, but there is no rule against ending sentences with prepositions in English. As Winston Churchill observed: "This is the sort of nonsense up with which I will not put."

Also, the pronunciation of "often" is a matter of regional dialect. You say "nee-ther," and I say "ny-ther": we may have to call the whole thing off, but neither of us is actually wrong.

  • How to Avoid (and Treat) Cold Sores   11 years 33 weeks ago

Andrea, I applaud your article and your determination to stick to scientifically backed information, while still relaying anecdotal information without recommendation. I am troubled by your response to this commentator regarding sores in the mouth. If you follow the science of it all, then you know that HSV-1 (and 2 for that matter) are related to chicken pox and shingles viruses, and their lesions can pop up anywhere on the body, even inside the mouth.

Maybe in mouth lesions are not "cold sores" for purposes of your article, but they can most definitely be HSV-1 lesions. and yes, I do know the difference between in mouth HSV-1 blisters and canker sores. They are not the same thing, but they can both occur inside the mouth. In the best interest of your readers, please look into this and adjust your post. Thank you.

  • Watch All The Documentary Movies You Can Handle, Free Online - And Yes, It's Legal.   11 years 33 weeks ago

Of course documentaries are mostly about someone's opinion on a given subject. Documentary filmmakers seldom make films based only on conjecture and hunches of what they thin is true. They most often mix in a fair share of history and scientific facts that are not in dispute. Most often we get a finished film that is not a good balance of fact vs. supposition. Therefore, such a documentary should be considered unreliable as a good source of fact and reason.
This is clearly not the case with all documentaries. There are numerous good ones to be viewed. I would speculate there is a good chance that you have an interesting life observation that I and others would benefit from if you were to make a film on that subject?. If you were to make a documentary on a subject that you are passionate about, you may enlighten many people. To enlighten people is what drives many a filmmaker to make documentaries. Not all filmmakers are delusional and greedy. Especially documentary filmmakers, as even successful films aren't very lucrative. That is where I would hope my intelligence kicks in. During and after I watch a documentary, I consider what is being proposed. The documentary may be pure crap, full of conjecture, assumptions and speculations based on a lot of nothing. There are a lot of documentaries like that out there. However, your documentary (or anybody's) may educate me with an idea(s) that I had never known or thought about. Then, like an educated person should do, I do some research on what has been proposed in the film, and I come to find that the ideas are very sound...or out to lunch. There, you may have educated me in an area I likely would never have known about in my lifetime. Knowledge is one of the greatest gifts you can give someone. Good filmmakers often give me the gift of knowledge. Clearly, a lot of documentary makers have a selfish agenda which has nothing to do with educating people with real knowledge. That doesn't mean you can or should lump all documentary filmmakers together. Occasionally, I will watch a documentary that educates me and changes my life. That is not often, but such rare genius filmmakers are doing a noble deed to pass on their knowledge to other people.
P.S. - You likely noticed that I did not include examples of documentaries that fit the bill of being legitimately educational and useful to mankind. That is because I don't want to write a book and debate the merit of individual documentaries. I just wanted to throw out the idea that many people have great knowledge that is unknown to most people. Documentaries are a perfect medium to disseminate such knowledge, if the holder of such knowledge chooses to share it.

  • 12 Grammar Mistakes That Are Making You Look Stupid   11 years 33 weeks ago

In the spoken language in today's world:

wrong: "where you at?" - never end a sentence with a preposition
    correct: "where are you?"
    also,
wrong: pronouncing the "t" in the word "often"
correct: no "t" sound - it's pronounced as "offen"

Both are SO prevalent, and I cringe every time I hear either one.

  • Did Your Parents Give You a Whole Life Insurance Policy? Here's What to Do With It.   11 years 33 weeks ago

This tax hit you see usually isn't there.

Your basis for the policy is the amount you have already paid in. It's rare, except in long duration policy situations for the policy to have a cash value that exceeds the basis.

And even then, your tax liability is only on the gains over the basis.

Thankfully you're not my financial planner.

  • Did Your Parents Give You a Whole Life Insurance Policy? Here's What to Do With It.   11 years 33 weeks ago

While the loan from your policy may be tax free, the loan itself is not interest fee.

In effect you pay the insurance company interest to borrow money you should have already had in your pocket.
