I use skype $10 for unlimited calls to my family who dont have internet or smartphone. Also with friends or family members who have smart phones and access internet. I use viber to call them. Its free!
As 'uncool' as it might be I use Facebook to keep in touch with friends and family. I feel more in touch by seeing the photos and comments than I ever did using the gossip method :P
With my Dad and my brother & his family living out of state, we keep contact mostly by talking on the phone. My kids and I also travel from NJ to SC every summer via Amtrak, which is much less expensive then plane.
I use Vonage for my telephone. So all long distance calls are include in the $30 monthly fee. Plus I have a virtual number where I used to live for $5 a month so anyone from there can call me locally. and of course Facebook.

Often they have the same manufacturer, but I can't remember which site had the item, in which print and price! So confusing - I'd appreciate any advice.
My parents did this for about 12 years (6 months in Florida and 6 months in Michigan). They loved it but I'd HATE it. My cats and I don't travel well and I'm a bit claustrophobic.
Richmond is one of the coolest cities I've lived in and pretty cheap!(I've lived in Boston and Chicago).
Don't think you've been to Richmond lately Mike. Crime rates have dropped significantly over past 10 years and well within the national ave crime rates.
We try to stop at Whole Foods, Trader Joes, or similar grocery stores while on the road. If you're careful with what you pick out, you can stock up on foods that are healthier than most vacation options and cheaper than restaurants on the highway!
There's also some great local blogs out there that will round up all happy hour deals, specials, etc. that will include all the best cheap eats in their city ;) All little research before the trip can go a long way in saving some money!

We use email almost exclusively. Phone calls are for emergencies!

I've been using WhatsApp to text with a friend in London so that we're not getting charged extra for worldwide texting!
